According to the text “What is Enlightenment” written by Immanuel Kant, enlightenment is “Sapere aude!” (Kant 105), which translates to “dare to know.” One reached enlightenment once they have achieved maturity and freedom. Throughout Immanuel Kant’s work “What is Enlightenment,” (Kant 105) he suggested that mankind developed a dependency on others for answers. Immanuel Kant believed that humankind is lazy and full of cowardice. Kant believed that humans depend too much on others by basing their decisions and thoughts solely on the words of others. Due to dependency, humankind developed a habit of laziness throughout time. This habit eventually serves as the main barrier prohibiting one from being enlightened because one is too lazy to seek the truth or oneself. Kant suggested that in order to each enlightenment, one must not be afraid to take the first step and use one’s own judgment and understanding. One must separate oneself from immaturity, and to achieve that, one must have fearlessness and vigor. Kant also speaks of freedom and suggested that one should have the freedom to express their opinion and act on it, one should be able to criticize what is wrong and change it.

Kant’s general proposed understanding of Enlightenment first originates with the enlightenment of the individual. Within the first few lines of Kant’s essay, “what is Enlightenment?”, he states the definition of enlightenment as “man’s emergence from his self-incurred immaturity” (Kant 1). Kant first highlights the problem of immaturity, which he says to be “the inability to use one’s own understanding, but lack of resolution and courage to use it without the guidance of another” (Kant, 1). In this paper I am going to attempt to answer a question utilizing a little help from one of two philosophers. First of all the question I will be answering is “Should the moral value of an action be determined by the intentions/character that inspire the action, or the consequences that result from the action?” Second, the philosophers I am going to discuss throughout this paper are Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. Now before I tell you my answer to this question I am going to explain these who these two philosophers are and what their viewpoints on ethics are.

Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him “just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit.”(Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth.It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. “ While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. Immanuel Kant was a famous philosopher whose philosophical influences impacted almost every new philosophical idea, theory, concept etc. In a sense, he was considered the central face of contemporary philosophy. Kant spent his whole life in Russia. Starting out as a tutor, to then a professor, he lectured about everything; from geography to obviously philosophy. In his early life, he was raised to emphasize faith and religious feelings over reason and theological principles. As he got older though, that position changed. It then became that knowledge is necessarily confided and within the bounds of reason. Now with this in mind, Kant claims many different things that derive from this. There are many different parts and aspects to it which is why it relates to almost every philosophical idea out there. Kant referred his epistemology as “critical philosophy” since all he wanted to do was critique reason and sort our legitimate claims of reasons from illegitimate ones. His epistemology says that we can have an objective, universal, and necessary knowledge of the world, and that science cannot tell us about reality. He claims science cannot tell us anything because it only tells us about the world as it is perceived, whether it’s based on measures, manipulations, experiments and so on. Kant says that we all have knowledge; that the mind and experience work together and that we construct and gain this knowledge by both reason and experience.

The Age of the Enlightenment during the beginning of the 18th century was a revolution that vanquished the suffocating darkness of superstition that shrouded the Middle Ages. Revolutionary thinkers of the Enlightenment, such as Denis Diderot, René Descartes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, led western civilization out of the darkness of ignorance with a small flame generated by the power of scientific and intellectual reason. For a while, it seemed as though the reason and rationality of Enlightenment thinking would be the harbinger of peace. However, this idea of peace was merely a conjectured fantasy that disregarded the rising discontentment of a newly oppressed people. This is displayed through the perversion of the French Revolution into an irrational and passion driven bloodbath. Towards the end of the 18th century, people felt that the rigidity of scientific reason instilled by the Enlightenment was bleeding the spirit, morality, and especially the passion out of existence. The small flame of the Enlightenment was ignited into a raging fire of oppressed passion generated through the power individualistic thinking. Rather than focusing on a unified peace, revolutionaries, such as Thomas Paine, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann von Goethe and Jane Austen, of the late 18th and 19th century emphasized the passion of self-expression within the individual.

The Enlightenment was a cultural movement that swayed people who initially made decisions based on their faith to making decisions based on reason. It seems effortless but in reality it changed the game for many people back then. Even today, people do crazy things because of their faith and if asked to justify themselves, they would not be able too. People brave enough to understand this new paradigm shift like Locke, Paine, and Kant influenced society with their new fascinating philosophies that have influenced us till today. What they did not realize is how corrupt the development of reason would become. Rousseau understood reason and never denied it but also saw its future, which is why he chose compassion over reason. Through Locke’s, Paine’s and Kant’s examples we can understand that there was nothing wrong with reason until society took advantage of it and made it unethical; its clash with faith and a person’s emotions is unveiled beautifully by Rosseau and that would be society’s definite way to go if we desired to stand by our moral virtues.

Enlightenment is described as a period of intellectual growth. Immanuel Kant is a German philosopher and a leading figure of modern philosophy. In 1784, Kant released an essay titled, “Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?” The essay was written during a period of intense political and social changes in Prussia. The essay is a plea for society to think autonomously and with free will. In the essay, Kant asserts that one must have an enlightened approach to life. Kant describes enlightenment as “man’s emergence from his self imposed immaturity” (Kant 41). He goes to describe immaturity as, “the inability to use one’s understanding without the guidance of another” (Kant 41). Kant states the motto of enlightenment as ““Have courage to use your own understanding”” (Kant 41). In the essay, Kant also outlines the obstacles of enlightenment. The author provides the definitions of private and public use of reason to further elucidate the concept of enlightenment. The aspect of public and private reason can be easily muddled. Immanuel Kant uses the essay to distinguish between the act of collectively deciding on a course of action and the act of implementing those collective decisions privately. The distinction is critical: public reason is a matter of acting in accordance to oneself, whereas private use of reason is a matter of submitting to authority. Most have no understanding that Kant says because they weren’t given the sense to use their own understanding. I feel that Kant dares us to have courage because when he discovered his own understanding he felt a sense of greatness and accomplishment.
