When someone hears the word immigrant most first think they are either poor, dirty, and illegal. What most people don’t look past the appearance they see walking past them. They don’t see the blood, sweat, or the long days and nights it took for that ‘immigrant’ to get where they are now. Also, most immigrants who travel to America travel here to give their children better lives. Therefore, those long days and nights will be worth it in the end when they can see their child walk across a stage and collect a diploma. However, undocumented children still are facing obstacles with not being allowed to attend community or state colleges, or receive in-state tuition, and most cannot receive financial aid. Immigrants should be able to qualify to receive financial aid. Americans think just because these people crossed over our border without permission makes them bad individuals. Which could not be farther from the truth. Most immigrants that have traveled thousands of miles experiencing sleepless and hungry nights have …show more content…
Angela M. Banks states, “while a number of states prohibit undocumented students from being eligible for in-state tuition rates, only Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina prohibit these students from enrolling in public colleges and universities” (1425). While American students can pay in-state tuition to attend college. Again, immigrant students are not given the same privilege. Furthermore, immigrant students have a hard enough time getting into college, now they might not even be able to pay for it due to the fact they are not being treated like any other in-state student trying to better themselves. In all, children who have been brought to America as a child by their parents should be able to have the same rights as an American citizen. It only seems fair since they had no say on whether they wanted to come to America or
The undocumented students that will benefit from the Dream Act are students that are practically U.S citizens but not by birth. Some opponents to the Dream Act don’t realize how much these students have suffered throughout their life. The article, “Standing up for Immigrant Students,” mentions all of these hardships and struggles; children are exposed to many dangers when crossing the border, and once they settle in the U.S they face other hardships and struggles like learning a new language, meeting the expectations of their instructors, and being discriminated against (4-5). Despite the obstacles they encounter in their path, many manage the way to do well in school and many overpass American students and become leaders in their community. Being undocumented becomes a major issue for undocumented high school graduates who want to continue their education because it’s nearly impossible to attend a University and get federal help because a valid social security number is required. These young adults are some of the best and brightest students in this country;
If we talk about undocumented immigrants in United States, we usually focus on the benefits and jobs they take from our country, but have we ever stood in their shoes and imagine what life is like for an illegal immigrant? To live as an undocumented immigrant is a bad situation, but I believe to be a child of an undocumented immigrant is even worse, because their choices are limited and they are unaware of their rights to attend colleges. In this research, I will focus on undocumented immigrant students, who are unable to afford for higher education, and the fear of their unknown future which is mainly cause by their undocumented status. The largest invisible group in America, to explore “what are the struggles and unsolved problems of
In the Unites States alone we have an estimate of 11 million unauthorized immigrants resided in the United States in 2014. According to the migration policy, there are more than 54 percent resided in four states: California (27 percent), Texas (13 percent), New York (8 percent) and Florida (6 percent). The number of illegal immigrants that migrant to this country is highly significant, as well as the number of children they have in out country. One of the legal ways for illegal immigrants to become residents of the country is to have children and wait to achieve there residence. However during the wait to achieve residence, they children take advantage many serves. Such as the schools and health care, simply because they have been born in America. The reality is that they come to this country to abuse out benefits. Taking up our resources and not improving their and our
Today Mexicans should not be deported even if they came here illegally. Mexicans have been here since 1854. Our President should look at America’s history; Mexicans have been here long before the Americans. Some people state that immigrants that came here illegally should not get free education. People don't realize that Mexicans also help. Mexicans also serve in the military. Also think if we deport parents, where and with who are the kids going to stay with. You? I strongly agree that immigrants should not be deported, unless they have a criminal record.
In my opinion, undocumented immigrants should not be allowed to pay in-state tuition rates. It will not be fair for students who is legally living in United State in general and in Texas as residents for less than a year because they still pay- out of state tuition for their first year. I myself am an example for this because, in my first year in college, I have to pay out of state tuition with my own money. College students like me have to go through many processes before we are allowed to pay in-state tuition. More than that, the parents have to pay taxes in order to provide education benefits for their children. Now, we have to share our benefits with undocumented immigrants who do not contribute anything to our society. It is not a right thing to me. In-state tuition is a reward for undocumented immigrants who
I believe that undocumented immigrants should be eligible for free public education, but as afar for health care and social services I still have mixed feelings. I believe that with so much controversy around this issue of undocumented immigrants, I stand for what is fair for undocumented and documented groups. For example, in the educational resource, I believe that all the children regardless of their documents status should be educated. The main factor I will suggest why undocumented children should be educated is because they are now part of our society. And either we like it or not, either is fair or not, either we have opinion about the whole immigration status. The children are here now, they are part of our society, and eventually they
Children of illegal immigrants should be allowed to attend in schools. School for all children help them out later in life being educated and with getting jobs. Children need to be educated with learning so they know about what’s going on. All children deserve an equal opportunity with education no matter if they’re parents are legal or illegal citizens, children shouldn’t be punished by not being allowed to go to school because children of illegal are still people who should have the same rights as children of legal citizens.
Illegal immigrants who are in the United States should have a chance in life. A chance to try to have a better future for their family and themselves. Americans are the first to criticize mexican immigrants for being illegal. They say that immigrants take their jobs, that Americans don’t do. Immigrants should have a right to go out in public and not be scared to be deported. They should be able to become U.S citizens, so they can stay in the U.S legally. They could work and provide for their families. If illegal immigrants can become legal in the U.S it could save ICE billions of dollars, they can bring their talents to the U.S, and it wouldn’t be such a long process to become a U.S citizen.
With education being the number priority and the reason why many immigrants came to the United States, but with many organizations have been helping many immigrants in achieving their citizenship, but also helping students with scholarships with non-profit foundation, meaning that the no federal organization gave them money with no strict requirements about their status in the U.S to get this scholarships. An organization located here is here in Texas that is called the North Texas Dream Act which helps millions immigrants that still don’t have legal status yet and helps them in many ways by giving funds and scholarships to students that are in need to find money to finish their career and start a good life. Other ways of achieving funds to pay for tuition at certain college or universities by receiving in state tuition that is based on financial aid but the requirement aren’t very crucial they just to live in the state for two years and graduated from high school or got a GED. For example Texas has the application Texas Application for State financial aid and many don’t even know it exists being that it existed for more than a decade. If parents were to leave and be deported the student
In 2001 California and Texas put legislation in place so Undocumented Students can receive in- state tuition rates. There are some requirements for students to receive the rates. Undocumented students must live in state and attend high school for a specified period (1-4 years), and graduate or receive their GED. Students must be accepted to a public college or university,and must show proof that they are going to file for legal immigration status.Currently, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Washington allow undocumented students to receive in- states tuition rates.
Should illegal immigrants that have children born in the U.S be entitled to public education? Wait don't answer that yet. Let me tell you why they should. Every kid has the right to a public education no if you're an immigrant or a U.S citizen. Children of an illegal immigrant in the U.S want to have a better life than their parents and go to college. Another reason is that most people don't have the chance to a public education.
As I kept researching, I came to a realization that improving college affordability is a bigger priority as the faltering economy and limited-skill jobs are on the rise. In the case Plyler vs Doe, they described education not a fundamental right but rather that it was “…pivotal role in maintaining the fabric of our society and in sustaining our political and cultural heritage.” (NSCL). However, the requirement to receive instate tuition is based on high school attendance and graduation rather than residency eligibility. Therefore it’s in compliance with the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act. Making college more affordable for undocumented immigrants not only pushes them to graduate high school, but to strive for
Have you ever heard the term “all lives matter”? As most people can see, not many people and schools approve of accepting the children of illegal immigrants. I think that most people think illegal immigrants are at a lower level and are not as important even if your just an immigrant. I think all people and children have the right to a good education. They come for help, they come knowing that they can get caught or even get deported.
Most undocumented immigrants came to America as children and have grown up here most, if not all, of their lives and denying them the chance to continue their education would not be fair. As mentioned above, one of the requirements to be accepted into a college and not have to pay extra is to graduate from a high school within the same state. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, each year over 1.2 million students drop out of high school with over half of them being minorities (2015). Young adults dropping out of school has increased crime in our cities as well as an increase in state welfare, ultimately costing the state more. If the minorities have the same chances as everyone else in this country, they would be more likely to continue with their education and receive a better job to help improve the economy. In contrast, many argue that undocumented immigrants paying a cheaper rate for tuition are taking resources away from those that are legal citizens. There are an estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants in America (Cortes 2013). It may cost more in tax to pay for their education, and there is a high chance that some immigrants will take the money back to their countries and not support the economy within that state. There is no way to weed out those who truly want to stay in America and those who plan to receive their education and leave. With that said, if a person wants to improve their life, earn a degree and make a better income to provide for their family what is stopping them from taking the right steps to become a legal citizen? An immigrant can come to America and make the decision to go through the process to become a legal citizen. Once they are a legal citizen there should be no concern weather or not the in-state or out-of-district fee should be applied to an undocumented immigrant. They
Illegal people come to United State for a better future for their family but more for their kid’s future. To have a better education and a better future different from their parents who maybe didn’t finish their education because they had to work to help their family in their native land. There are millions of people from different lands who have to immigrate to a better state to look for their future even if they become illegal. They do the jobs that others don’t do like work on the field or lands keeping because others don’t want to do it because they are difficult work to do. There’s more jobs that are hard to do and that illegal immigrants do them to get money. The students that come with their parents from their nation and don’t know ingles it’s hard for them to learn the new language but they do their best to learn it to be bilingual and have a better job in the future, some of them come when they are little and learn it fast but others come teenagers and is harder for them because they have learn another language when they were
