In the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there is an ongoing fight in Verona between two noble households of Montagues and Capulets. Their children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, meet at a party and instantly fall in love; knowing their newly formed love will anger their parents, the two are married secretly one evening with the help of Nurse and Friar Lawrence. More incidents result in Romeo’s banishment and Juliet’s arranged marriage with the Prince’s kinsman, and the two lovers are ultimately led to their deaths and the end of the feud. By using foreshadowing in Romeo’s lines, Shakespeare allows the reader to anticipate what will happen later during the party: “Some consequence yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly begin his fearful date … by some vile forfeit of untimely death” (Shakespeare 1.4.113-118). Since Romeo does not thoroughly think through the consequences of attending this event of his family’s enemy that he was not invited to, it leads to numerous problems, including his own demise at the end of the play. While attending the party, Tybalt, Lord Capulet’s nephew, recognizes Romeo’s voice and immediately wants to kill him due to feud mentality. His mentality is carried out later in the play, including challenging Romeo to a duel till death. Meeting Juliet and instantly falling in love with her, the two devote their loyalty to each other. At the end of the party, Nurse tells Juliet her mother wants a word with her, and Romeo finds out from Nurse that Juliet is a Capulet. He responds by exclaiming that his “life is [his] foe’s debt” (1.5.132). One of the main characters in particular, Romeo Montague, seems to rely on his impulsiveness to resolve his conflicts. Throughout the play, Romeo makes very hasty decisions, which result in unnecessary negative consequences. Three conflicts that Romeo solves recklessly are: his struggle with love; the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues; and the forcefulness of love. His ignorance can be seen when he proceeds to depart to the masquerade party. He fears his doom and expresses it when he says, “By some vile forfeit of untimely death”(1.4.112). The young lover fears of his death by proceeding to appear at the Capulet's masquerade party. However, even though young Romeo can feel the forces of destiny, he still attends the party. His attendance leads to the two lovers meeting, and other events lead to the demise of the two. Another warning sign ignored by Romeo is the dream he has the night before his servant, Balthasar comes to inform Romeo of Juliet’s so called death. Romeo expresses this after waking from his slumber, “I dreamt my lady came and found me dead—strange dream that gives a dead man leave to think”(5.1.6-7). His ignorance of a simple warning leads to the tale in the dream to come true. Once he finds out Juliet is ‘dead’, he kills himself, only for her to wake up and find her love dead on the floor. In this part of the story, the relationship between Friar Lawrence and Romeo is shown. Although they are years apart in age, they seem to have a brotherly relationship. In this act and scene, the reader, or actor, has a chance to understand the characters better. You are able to find character traits. For instance, Romeo is impulsive, dramatic, and reckless. Also, Friar Lawrence is attentive, hopeful, and very trustworthy.
