Individuality In Ayn Rand's Anthem

“We made it. We created it.We brought it forth from the night of the ages.We alone.” (38) In the dystopian novel called Anthem by Ayn Rand a boy named equality lives in a society in which individuality is inconceivable and he is driven by his curiosity to learn which eventually led him to individuality and solitude when he leaves his society. Ayn Rand use equality's experiments with electricity to show equality develope from group mentality to absurd individuality illustrating her point that individuality rules over groups and that everyone should be entirely and only individual. The claim that he started selfless is also supported by the quote ¨ We alone in this hour do research with no purpose save that we wish to.¨(19) This shows us that in the beginning he is researching just out of curiosity but it also shows us through the start of his research he began to become more individual by using the word alone and doing it because it satisfies him not the greater group. Also in the beginning of the book after he found his new power he said “Let us be lashed for it”(32). This shows that he does not care if he is harmed if he helps his brothers which is one of the best example of selflessness. The entire book of anthem was of Ayn Rand's theories of how the world should be and her hero equality. But it is all opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt. In the end it is for you to judge if it is right but it is for you to choose your own
