Today in society, there are many things people would consider “unequal” which starts the conversation about inequality. Inequality exists all over the world. It can be defined as, “the difference in social status, wealth, or opportunity between people or groups” (Collins, 2017). There are many examples today that can be labeled as inequality. Three examples of places where inequality is substantially prevalent today are Flint, Michigan; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Monterrey, Mexico. These aren’t the only places with substantial amounts of inequality throughout the world, but they have made headlines in the United States and around the world. Not only are there problems with the government not treating people equally, there are also problems with wealth not being equally distributed in the United States, which causes inequality within itself. Because the money isn’t equally distributed, the level of education varies throughout the United States.
For the last three years Flint, Michigan, has been engulfed with a variety of different problems. One of the main problems it faced was the amount of lead that was in its water. Not only did people start complaining right away, but many people fell victim to this and started contracting diseases. Flint is “57% black and incredibly poor” (Craven & Tynes, pg 1). There is enough lead in Flint’s water that it can be categorized under toxic waste. Residents of Flint were drinking and bathing in toxic waste and the government didn’t try
Each year income increases in the United States. Economic inequality and political inequality may have a connection where our democracy could be affected but americans have the ability to solve this problem. Economic inequality refers to wealth or income between different groups or a society as a whole. There have been past social movements that have tried to improve this problem such as women's suffrage and more. We are still trying to resolve this issue of economic inequality.
An essential necessity for life is slowly killing residents in Michigan. The town of Flint, Michigan is slowly being poisoned by their water supply. Flint is 70 miles north of Detroit with a population of 98,310. According to the U.S. Census Bureau a little under half of residents live below the poverty line. More than fifty-five percent of the city’s population is African-American (CNN Library). The dangerous lead levels in the water went unnoticed for years, despite the residents’ complaints of discolored and foul-smelling water. The question at hand is how could this happen?
Many service lines leading into homes are leaching lead into the water. This problem happened because the city of Flint decided to not treat the water properly with corrosion control (Ganrin, 2016). This proves that officials did not care about those living in Flint. They chose to save money but instead they destroyed many lives. So this proves that our government is not there to help the people out, but instead to cut money wherever they feel necessary to not have to take it from other places. Lead poisoning can affect IQ and behavior. This can cause some people to become score low on standardized test and to become violent and to sometimes harm others. No level of lead is ever safe in any person or animal (Ganrin, 2016). The water source in Flint is currently undrinkable and very unsafe and will continue to be for months ahead ("Researcher: Flint water 'like Russian roulette'," 2016). Flint water is not a safe water source and has not been for many months. According to federal regulations Flint's water supply still does not meet standards. Since August 2015 the water supply has improved, but it still is not safe ("Researcher: Flint water 'like Russian roulette'," 2016). The people of Flint have been poisoned under their noses without even knowing it, secretly being sickened by their own government. Flint’s water is not safe it's an unreliable water
Leonard Pitts Jr. wrote an article about Flint, Michigan’s lead water out break. Complaining about hair loss (even in pets), nausea, and rashes. This happened in April and now in January it is becoming a big deal stated in the article. Flint switched their water supply to Flint River because it was cheaper. The river is filled with bacteria and chemicals. Leonard talks about doctors that are finding lead in little kids blood and that can lead to a lot of damages including brain damage, anti social behavior, and more. The city is very poor and this problem could have been taken care of if they just paid an extra 100$
Over the past few years, Flint, Michigan, has undergone a severe water crisis. The problem arose when the area’s water supply was changed to the Flint River. The problem, however, arose in the extreme amounts of lead in the water. While studies and tests were conducted by the government, no information was broadcast, and the general
In the article “It’s All Just Poison Now”, Oliver Laughland and Ryan Felton discuss how the lives of the residents of Flint, Michigan have been negatively affected by the city’s tainted water supply. Flint’s aging lead pipes, coupled with its corrosive water sources, have cause a number of contaminants to seep into the water supply. On top of this, the city’s water supply is inadequately purified, which caused many residents to be exposed to these toxins. The main concern to residents is the presence of poisonous lead in the water, which can be deadly even in low amounts. The community of Flint has been unknowingly drinking and bathing in these chemicals, despite being told by city officials that the water was safe. As a result, many residents
Flint, Michigan has made headlines in the news over the past few years for their water crisis. The city thought that they would be able to save money by switching from Detroit City water to water from the Flint River. Unfortunately, they didn’t treat the water in an effort to prevent the pipes from corroding. This allowed lead and bacteria to flow through the pipes and into the homes of Flint residents. Many citizens have been sick and have gotten lead poisoning since then (Kennedy).
In April 2014, an emergency manager, Darnell Earley, switched Flint’s water from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Not long after the switch, people began complaining about the color of their water changing. Then, in 2015, some Virginia Tech researchers found out that the water from the river was eroding the pipes. Soon after that, they realized that lead had been getting into the water. So, they tested the water and came up with some startling results. Some homes exceeded one hundred parts per billion, suggesting many were well above the World Health Organization’s lead limit for safe drinking water of ten parts per billion. (Kuehn.) So naturally, the government immediately should have done something for their people, right? Well obviously that’s
All humans are created equal, or so we thought. Flint Michigan is going through an extreme water crisis where all water is contaminated with lead. Action has not been taken right away and something needs to be done. The Flint water crisis is not really a debate on its own, we all know action needs to be taken. What is controversial is what should be the immediate and long term actions that need to be taken. We all must understand that the water is contaminated with lead due to the pipes corroding. This lead contaminated water has many harmful side effects, one of the worst is lowering I.Q in children (Lead Poisoning). Citizens of Flint as a result have to use bottled water for everything from bathing to cooking, but it does have its limitations.
Let’s begin with a brief summary of the events that lead to the crisis in Michigan. On April 25, 2016 city administrators decided to switch Flint’s water supply Detroit’s system to the Flint river (Lurie, 2016). After only a few months, residents began complaining about foul smells and serious health concerns, such as hair loss and severe rashes. On October 2014, general motors, the city’s largest source of revenue for decades, stops using municipal water due to its corrosive effects on auto parts (Lin, Rutter, & Park, 2016). Despite multiple complaints and health concern reports, in March 2014, the Veolia consultant group did not report any significant finding of lead or toxic chemicals. (need info on child lead levels)
Income inequality has affected American citizens ever since the American Dream came to existence. The American Dream is centered around the concept of working hard and earning enough money to support a family, own a home, send children to college, and invest for retirement. Economic gains in income are one of the only possible ways to achieve enough wealth to fulfill the dream. Unfortunately, many people cannot achieve this dream due to low income. Income inequality refers to the uneven distribution of income and wealth between the social classes of American citizens. The United States has often experienced a rise in inequality as the rich become richer and the poor become poorer, increasing the unstable gap between the two classes. The
Currently there are many problems and flaws with the way the Canadian government’s policies deal with healthcare, income inequality and poverty. Time to time changes in policies have been made, perhaps to improve these issues, however, the gap between rich and poor keeps increasing and there is very little improvement in healthcare and the economy. In fact, healthcare keeps on becoming costly. Major issues like income inequality and poverty are not being taken care of by the government. According to Dr. Raphael (2002) poverty is caused by several reasons such as inequality in people’s income, weak social services and lack of other social supports (p.VI). He states, “Poverty directly harms the health of those with low incomes while income
A major social problem in America today is its inequality of the distribution of income. "Income inequality refers to the gap between the rich and the poor. The United States has the most unequal income distribution in the industrialized world, and it is growing at a faster rate than any other industrialized country" (Eitzen & Leedham, pg. 37). The main reason as to why income is distributed so unequally is because of the gap between social classes.
Our society has many ethical implications of socioeconomic inequalities. It is a social fact honestly, when people think about social inequality, they generally put social inequality in the terms of socioeconomic class. The United States has the largest gap in wealth. This gap causes people to start arguing about lower, middle, and upper class. Depression played a major role in the gap as well. People who have wealth and money have the top social standings in the society and enjoy the greatest privileges as brought on by their money and their social status. On the other hand, people who end up poor or have very little or no access to these high privileges and are usually marginalized in the terms of education and social services.
The four dimensions of inequality include wealth, income, education, and occupation. In the United States people are ranked differently from everyone based on these four dimensions. A person’s economic circumstance is governed by wealth and income. Wealth is a personal net worth and income is the amount of money earned. Income is annual and wealth is generational. Both are distributed unequally in society, while wealth is of more importance. Only some are able to achieve wealth while 19 million Americans are living below half of the government’s line. The contribution of wealth is unequal, for example, the richest 1% in 2004 had 190 times the wealth of the median household. Or also, the top 1 percent of wealth holders control 34% of total household wealth, which is more than the combined wealth of the bottom 90%. Income inequality is increasing in the U.S society. There is in an increasing gap in the difference of earnings between the heads of corporations and the workers in those corporations. In 1980, the average CEO of a corporation was paid forty-two more times than the average worker. Education: the amount of formal education an individual achieves is determinant of their occupation, income, and prestige. There is a similarity between being inadequately educated and receiving little or no income. Evidence shows that in 2008, the annual earnings of college graduates are more than double non-high
