In this course, I hope to learn the importance of the multicultural influence on the school system and the sociological approach to address the issues in today's education system. Furthermore, Art Museum education programs are intertwine with the public school system, therefore have an understanding of the weaknesses and the issues that the school system faces will be a tremendous benefit. Additionally, this would enable the Museum’s to be a bridge between the public school systems and the community, in other words the museums would designing education programs to fill in the gap that the public school system cannot provide because of economics.
Schools across America are cutting Fine Arts programs left and right due to budget cuts and reduced funding, which is preventing students the ability to have an equally standardized arts education. About 95% of schools in America have eliminated or reduced their fine arts program’s funding. According to a report released by the PCCY only 149 out of the 268 public schools in Philadelphia have a choral teacher and 59% of them have an art teacher (Davis). These schools that lack fine arts teachers have felt the need to reduce faculty in order to pay for other expenses. This prevents students from receiving the benefits associated with a fine arts education. In addition, two out of every ten schools don’t have a choral or an art teacher (Davis).
When I was younger, I thought museums were boring and dull, filled with pointless, nonsensical art work that people just pretended to understand what the artists were thinking. I thought people interpreted imaginary meanings from the art that other people just followed and accepted because it was the “cool” thing to do. This is one of the main reasons I avoided going to museums that were art based. Once I got the opportunity to visit an art-based museum for myself, I actually enjoyed it. I began to build my admiration and appreciation of art from then on. I have had the opportunity to visit many museums but this was the first time I visited The Museum of Modern Art. I always saw MoMA related things around New York City but was never able to
This article is based on a study that was funded in 2001 by the National Art Education Foundation and it focused on the use of arts education in juvenile detention centers in the United States (107). The purpose of this study was to figure out if art education helped children and teens in juvenile detention centers to have a better vision of the future (107). The National Art Education Foundation created a survey to support their research and it was composed of 17 multiple choice and short answer questions (108). The questions in the survey asked people of each institution about funding, instruction, demographics, and participation in the art programs. This survey was given to each of the 478 public residential juvenile correctional facilities
“After a certain high level of technical skill achieved, science and arts tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientist are artist as well” (Albert Einstein). In this advanced modern tech-world mostly people are dependent on science and technology, but arts also play an important role in education. Art creates balanced thinking and better imagination which helps humans to be successful in their career. Yo-Yo Ma intensely informs about important role of arts in modern education society throughout his essay Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and education. Ma illustrates that arts should be also part of education, because it improve students to filter their imagination through disciplined knowledge. Liberal arts should be equal to science and technology because it creates new idea, and in this modern world people should think critical than divergent in their lives. Empathy teaches students to understand and simplify the complicated life. Collaboration include discussion amongst people or group to make things effortless. Moreover liberal arts itself is beauty such as performing arts, it values the beauty of imagination in modern society by art and sculpture.
Among the many artworks I have seen, I decided to discuss about the “Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women)” from the Roman civilization. It was built sometime in between 140 A.D. to 170 A.D and is approximately forty and a half inches in length, ninety-one and a half inches in width, and fifty and a half inches tall in height (“Roman Sarcophagus”). This masterpiece appealed to me because of the unique approach that has been designed to honor the deceased. Many people are familiar with the formatting and inscriptions of a gravestone because it is usually engraved with an individual’s full name, birth date, and death date. During the Roman Empire, a sarcophagus, which is a coffin, was widely used to show decorative themes that includes: battle scenes, hunting scenes, weddings, or other memorable episodes from the life of the deceased individual. The most luxurious ones were made from marble surrounded by symbolic sculptures, figures and inscriptions on all four sides (“Sarcophagus”). Another feature that captured my attention was the large quantity of details used to bring out a lifelike aspect of the deceased individual’s favorable moments in their life. In this artwork, this sarcophagus was dedicated to a Roman commander. The exterior of the sarcophagus has been well-decorated and carved with exquisite details depicting a battle scene
One of those negatives is that the museum is misunderstood, so they have very few visitors. This is bad because the museum cannot present their works of art to anybody. Few people know about the museum, and the people who do know think it’s boring. This is because often people have the stereotype that only traditional people can go to museums. However, by creating advertisements, and by raising money for the art curator so that they can pick art that is more interesting for the neighborhood, people will be attracted to the museum. Also, as a student, my advice is that they need to make the museum more visible because before I did not know that there was a museum in Manhattan that represented the Hispanic culture. However, now that I am doing this work about the museum I have realized that the Hispanic Society of America is very interesting and an incredible museum to know, and because of that, we have to do campaigns and field trips to make the museum more
The title of the exhibition is called “Intersection: World Arts, Local Lives.” This exhibition opened on September 30, 2006. Some of the pieces displayed on this exhibition were not new, since Professor Brown had already gone over them. The exhibition contained a divination board, vessels, male and female figures, masks, headdresses, staffs, textiles, among others things. The art pieces were from different parts of the world. The exhibition is divided into four different sections, each with its own theme. The different themes were Art and Action, Art and Knowledge, Art and Power, and Art and Transformation. The art found in the museum seemed like it didn’t have any crack, dents, or breaks on them. Professor Brown showed the class some pictures of art pieces that had some broken
I stumbled across the artwork “Last Judgement” by Circle of Hieronymus Bosch at Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. I was shocked when I initially saw this. I first noticed Jesus Christ centered at the top. I immediately knew it was a religious painting, particularly Christian. To the left of him, I recognized two lines of angels that I inferred were leading a sort of pathway to Heaven. I thought that it was interesting how that Bosch depicted that scene to being smaller compared to the rest of the artwork. The rest of the artwork depicted a dystopian environment. This dystopian environment was what I inferred to be Hell. Bosch depicted many horrifying events in the foreground. In the far right corner, you see that
This class should go to an art museum because you can learn about history. You can learn about what people did in the past. You can also see what was older than them. You can also learn new things about famous people.
The title of this poem translates into “Museum of Fine Arts” which is a museum that after some research, Auden allegedly visited and soon wrote this poem. I would infer, that the imagery present in the poem are allusions to the artwork that he saw while at the Musee Des Beaux Arts.
When you walk in the school, the first sight is a bunch of colorful artworks created by Curie students hung along the hallway. These eye-catching artworks are delivering the messages that our school values art, students enjoy art and have the freedom to show their artworks. Art is part of the identity of the school; this pointed to the Mission Statement of Curie, “emphasis on arts”. Moreover, the purpose is to expand this major in Curie. On the other hand, these bright color artworks help students to relax when they walk into school the first moment, the students would feel more relaxed and interested in school learning, that achieve the goal of creating a positive learning atmosphere for students. Secondly, attendance is another important element that leads to the success of positive learning atmosphere. The importance of attendance
For students and teachers, having a chance to be in this cultural environment is a life’s fortune. Although today’s social life is so different from the past, people are getting harder to focus on pure academic research because of the distractions from daily affairs. Especially for higher degree students that rely on independent research, which provides freedom, but also brings the problems of shallow research. Currently, the higher degree education in contemporary ceramic art of Asian should construct its own value system that suits Eastern culture and aesthetic. The views of above aspects had formed the exhibition’s main concept.
Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir. Barbara Streisand said, “Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth,” (Quotations). Streisand points out that there are multiple benefits to art whether it be painted by a brush or sung from the heart. Art has the ability to allow people to see situations from
At first, I didn’t want to go to the museum. That day, I was exhausted after finishing school, so going all the way to San Francisco wasn’t exactly my idea of relaxing. Thankfully, my mom insisted we go that day, since it was my dad’s day off. I felt frustrated that we had to go right then, but my mom forced us.
The Cambridge Dictionary Online defined museums as “places of study, buildings where objects of historical, scientific or artistic interest are kept, preserved and exhibited”. To The Museums Association, a museum is “an institution which collects documents, preserves, exhibits and interprets material evidence and associated information for the public benefit”. Since 1998, this definition has changed. Museums now enable the public to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society. Mike Wallace (1996) categorised museums into four distinct types, namely National Museums that hold collection of
