Informative Speech On Labor Unions

Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, my audience will make rational and informed decisions about life altering events. When faced with dilemmas that allow us to make choices, it is extremely important that decisions come from one’s own rational and informed conclusions, rather than relying upon what others present as unsubstantiated truth. “Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will” (Martha Bridgeman 2010). This was once a radical slogan for people without much money who claimed two-thirds of each day for themselves. Taking more than a hundred years of campaigns to achieve the eight-hour day and two-day weekend, years of meetings, protests, speeches and strikes; labor unions did help establish weekends off and eight-hour workdays. A unions is an organization of workers who have come together to improve their work lives through collective bargaining. With elected representatives in respected places, union representors negotiate labor contracts and disputes with employers. Today, I will inform you on the history of labor unions, how I recently was involved in making a life altering decision of unionizing my place of work, and my decision made from after researching for answers. Prior to the 1800’s, there were few unions in the United States. Most Americans worked as craftsmen or owned a family farm.
