Modern media has deemed dragons as bad, ugly, evil, and murderous creatures. Books and movies have supported this idea to sell tickets and books. However, it is a falsehood given to the public that avoids the truth. In shadowy shelves in libraries everywhere, the truth lies. Books like “Wings of Fire”, “Inheritance Cycle”, “Eon”, and “Pete’s Dragon” exposes more of the real beauty of dragons. This truth is supported by one of the oldest and wisest cultures in the world, Asian culture. The Asian people know that dragons are the misunderstood giants of the fantasy fiction world. In Asia, dragons are considered Gods. They are a symbol of luck. There are ten different dragon Gods. An Emperor of China would have all of his things named dragon …show more content…
However, there was only one “bad” dragon. This dragon wasn’t even always bad. He was set to do bad things by his “rider”. His rider used magic to control him and get him to do bad things. This eventually drove the dragon insane. This land used to be governed by good riders and good dragons. Dragons, yet misunderstood, are great, important and celebrated creatures. Cultures that celebrate them or even worship them see their majestic nature and realizes that dragons should be honored and respected in American literature and movies as the gentle hearted giants that they are. As Ciruelo Cabral said, “A dragon is an enormous, fierce, bloodthirsty creature that appears in fairy tales and legends, primarily as a foil to enhance the hero’s valor. Many consider this to be the definition of this obscure and mysterious creature, but a dragon is also something else… It is an admirable and intelligent creature with some fascinating characteristics, beyond what we are allowed to glimpse in fairy tales and legends. The dragon has often been misunderstood, persecuted and hounded simply because it is different. Like so many other living beings, it has suffered death at the hands of “civilized”
“The dragon is by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest her devour you. We go to the father of souls, but it is necessary to pass by the dragon.” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem) This quote was made famous by Flannery O’Connor’s writings. The quote is there to remind the readers that we will inevitably come across a “dragon” at some point throughout our lives. The dragon we see may take on many forms but all ending in some sort of suffering, pain, or bad decision. All the possibilities of the dragon depend upon the person facing it. O’Connor used this idea in the short stories, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” “A Late Encounter with the Enemy”, and “The Displaced Person.” These stories in particular illustrate the same type of dragon, the dragon of temptation. In Flannery O’Connor’s short stories the symbolism of the dragon is used to carry a theme of temptation throughout the plot.
St. Cyril of Jerusalem once said “The dragon is by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest he devour you. We go to the father of the souls, but it is necessary to pass by the dragon.” The road in which St. Cyril speaks of in this passage is the path one travels on his or her’s journey to Heaven, and the dragon is referring to the temptation one may submit to on that journey. Temptation is almost always present, but it is up to the individual to either acknowledge the dragon and ‘let him devour you’ or pass by and ignore the dragon. Flannery O’Connor wrote short stories with this quote in mind; she often depicts characters who become side tracked with pride, greed, vanity, etc. creating an encounter with the dragon on their
Some western cultures believe that dragons are harmful and malicious. On the contrary, some of these creatures can be beneficial and helpful in some ways. In the novel Dragonwings, Moon Shadow, the main character, immigrated to the US (or Land of the Golden Mountain as he calls it). He met his father, who is named Windrider. On the first day, Windrider told a narrative about his encounter with the Dragon King. This event caused Moon Shadow and his father to work together to eventually build an aeroplane dubbed Dragonwings. As a result, Moon Shadow invested his trust in Windrider. During the years with his father, he still remained steadfast about Windrider’s project of building an aeroplane. Both Moonshadow and Windrider faced many adversities while constructing their model.
In the novel, “Dealing with Dragons” written by Patricia C. Wrede, she discusses how a courageous princess called, Cimorene, disappears from the formal Medieval society. More often than not, Cimorene decides to go against the classic act of a princess. Throughout her adventures she faces several mysterious events, and she just happened to become a dragon's princess. Cimorene was justified in ignoring the expected social norms of the Medieval society because, women did not have many rights, she wanted to become an independent princess who wanted to make her own decisions, and an inspiration towards others.

Both Moonshadow, the little boy, and Windrider, his friend, see dragons as friendly and gentle creatures. Most other people would disagree with this view and say that they are terrible and fierce creatures. Both these characters love dragons because they act like dragons in their everyday life. Their passion for dragons all started when Windrider had a dream in which he received wings so that he could become a dragon.
Once upon a time … On an island we call Reptavia lived a species so mythical you wouldn’t believe it was real. The species was dragons and we call the island Reptavia because the dragons speak in a language we have yet to decipher. There were six types of dragons on the island Icewings, Flamewings, Seawings, Knowledgewings, Strongwings, and Desertwings. But there was a problem between the six tribes because Queen Torch of the Flamewings boasted that the Flamewings are the best Dragons in the land. The problem was that she said this at the annual inter-tribal meeting which caused the most stirring with Queen Frost of the Icewings because she always felt that the Flamewings were kind of dangerous.
Wild Dragons were long gone from these lands, long enough that for all of her eighteen years, Ciara would have never seen one, and her parents might only have seen them as children, or may even have been too young to remember when they stopped appearing. The dragon riders and their bonded beasts were still about (for all that they would never venture out to a country village like this without good reason) but they were a shadow of what they once were, and the legends of their exploits were just that, legends. Things that the modern order could never accomplish, though no one would ever say so to its face...
From a Christian perspective, the dragon is evidently representative of death, sin and the devil. Greed, pride, and anger are three deadly sins that are represented through the dragon that kills and dies by the hand of Beowulf during his final battle. When the dragon realized the goblet was stolen, he (INSERT QUOTE ABOUT DRAGON) The heat of his flames are symbolic of anger that flows through his veins, and the symbolic association of the dragon is to pride.
Although nearly every culture has the concept of dragons represented in its mythology or art, the idea of what a dragon looks like, how it behaves, or the purpose it serves varies drastically. Does the dragon fly—if so does it have wings or does it fly through other means? Does it breathe fire? Ice? Does it bring good luck, energy, or protection? Or does a dragon instill fear and bring harm and destruction? What is their intelligence level? The characteristics of a dragon can be determined based on whether or not we look at western dragons or eastern dragons. However, what’s even more interesting than the different variations of dragons that have been around for centuries, is the etymology of the term and how it has changed over time in meaning

Who hasn’t heard about dragons? They have been featured in countless forms such as literature, media, entertainment, advertisement, etc. Many people regard dragons as mere mythical beings of legend and as nothing more than a fictional idea of fantasy meant mostly for the purpose of enjoyment. However, it’s my believe that Dragons and their influence over the ages, have been a manifestation of earthly forces or man’s psyche with the discovery of fossils, the wrath of mother nature, and the rising of religion.
