After reading the article it is saying that the instruments do not reflect the complexity of comprehension, instead equating it with more limited skills. These skills are vocabulary, domain specific knowledge, word reading ability, and other reader capacities that are only part of comprehension. This connects to our last two readings because in the first article we read before this on Integrating literacy with content it talks about how many elementary teachers strength is in language arts. In addition it talks about that elementary students need to read, write and communicate about something in science and when they master that they can read, write and comprehend this same kind of learning in math. But they need to get on subject down at a
The article called “Literacy: A Lineage” by Melanie Luken and she wrote about her experience of her love for reading and writing. She became interesting to reading and writing because of her dad who one, which inspired and encouraged her to became interesting to reading and writing. She enjoyed writing the poems about her dad and her that they went to riding the bikes. She has developed her ability to understand her literacy of reading and writing because her father taught her. Her quote, “In the same way, my passion for reading and writing developed in me through the influence of my father who has a deep love of literature himself” (Luken 133). That is meaning father loves literacy so he taught
I learned a lot of things while planning this literacy night. First, I learn a lot about literacy night here in the U.S. Second, talking to the librarian was a great chance to improve my knowledge about those events and how to do it and what it attracts students and parents to attend the event. I also learn that it would be very good to engage parents with their children to give them opportunities to become more involved in schools. Also, event like this would make children motivation to read increases. I also appreciate the hard work that librarians do to give families and their children positive chance to have fun and read together. They spend their extra time to organizing and planning for events like that. So we should thank them and reward
Mariksa Nieves, our Southern & Rural Coordinator, brought your agency, Abriendo Puertas, to my attention just a couple of weeks ago. Thank you for the informative description of the agency’s mission, vision and programs.
Majority of politicians speak consistently and fluently so their message is properly understood by the voters. The 2016 United States presidential campaign had become the most controversial and talked about event in the last decade. Unfortunately, people began to find entertainment for someone who spoke non-articulately over someone who did speak so, which resulted in a jaw-dropping victory. Northrop Frye states his position as “A society like ours doesn’t have very much interest in literacy. It is compulsory to read and write because society must have docile and obedient citizens” (par.7). In other words, Frye states that although people can read and write, they have no interest in literacy.
New literacy are new forms of literacy which is gained from digitial technology developements ( Gunter & Gunter, n.d.) . In our world today we use form of literacy daily. Since I have enrolled at GCU, I have used technology more than I ever have before. New literacy is very important for teachers to learn, since the schools are turning this way more and more everyday. Not only can digitial technology help me as instructor advance more, but this also teaches children on a whole new level, helping them achieve and learn better than ever before.
On behalf of Literacy Connections, I want to thank the County Executive and your office for considering our grant application and for your continue support. We are the grateful recipients of the Agency Partner Grant for $20,000 for the next nine months. We are excited and look forward to continuing to provide basic literacy instruction to those most in need in the community.
There are numerous layers to understanding the complexities of quality literacy instruction. After reading the text, I soon realized that my knowledge base needed a rapid expansion. Incorporating technology to support instruction is a common practice in education, however I never thought it could be used to introduce new or complex content. The use of videos, coupled with guided instruction, can work as anchors to support students with complex concepts (Gambrell and Morrow). I usually deter away from using technology knowledge in the classroom because students spend so many hours encapsulated with social media outside of the classroom. I will consider changing my practice and incorporate quality videos to support my students learning.
Literacy in Mathematics is very different than literacy in other subjects. Mathematics requires student to analyze and decipher various symbols, charts, graph, and vocabulary. This causes many students to become lost and confused within the content. Teachers can overcome these struggles by using various strategies. One strategy is to analyze current teaching practices using a checklist of sorts.
The article tries to explore the role of treating knowledge as a product or an asset in literacy transformation. 12 individuals working in writing intensive positions were interviewed about their educational and social backgrounds, the forms of writing they encounter at their workplace, the audiences they usually write for, the technologies/instruments they use to produce texts etc. Based on the interviews, the author highlights some key pressure points that affect writing at workplace, like structural organization, government regulation, mediation and demands for innovation. Workplace organization becomes really important when high-stakes factors like profit making and company reputation rely on manufacturing texts. When texts are treated
The assessment is going to gauge students spelling on 10 different words. The words will include: moon, rock, snake, banana, bat, rat, spoon, map, milk, and ring. The 10 words will be spelled under pictures of the word. This assessment is focusing on beginning consonant sounds, so the teacher will really look and make sure the beginning consonant sounds is correct.
Constructing a literacy program is assembling the blocks in some logical way and then reassembling them when necessary. The program helps the philosophy that all students can learn to read and have high expectations for students. First set that is a part of the program is setting goals focuses on setting basic information down for the children to have a foundation of what they have to do. The goals may be based off of the school district curriculum or state standards. The teacher should pick the goal for the literacy program and bring it among the other teachers to agree on one. Second set that is a part of the program is choosing materials. The goals and philosophy lead into the materials and activities. Materials should include fiction and nonfiction books, plus informational. Everything should be included because children have different tastes. A whole bunch of materials should be included for back up plans and activity use. The third set that is a part of this program is selecting techniques and strategies. Teachers that are effective teachers with have a lot of techniques that they can use to fit the needs of their students. Teachers make the call to when it is time to change to a different technique. The fourth set that is a part of this program is building motivation. Motivating students help the students stay engaged in school and the teacher has a pace that she can stay. The fifth set that is a part of this program is building sense of Community. This is used
Previously I stated in assessment 1, reflecting personal literacy, to endeavour and improve my understanding and knowledge of academic literacy. I am aware of my weaknesses in the areas of Grammar, punctuation, the concept of active and passive voice and I have recently been made aware that my introduction needs to be structured to complement the body of my easy. Therefore to achieve my goals I have formulated a plan that will help improve my competency in academic writing.
During the Colloquium class we discussed about the Emergent Reading or Emergent Literacy, our professor explained to us that teachers need to have children with the knowledge of reading and writing skills before they learn how to read and write words. As we go outside with them we need to encourage our children or students to look at the signs in front of the store, including asking question about how many bottle of water we have in the shopping car. However, my facilitator said that we have to talk clearly to them, if the child is learning to talk and starting to ask questions. When they mispronounced words or they don’t pronounce in the correct form, we have to be there to clarify for them. For example, if the students ask for a glass
The study is focused on testing the rate of literacy acquisition in orthographically consistent Welsh language, and orthographically inconsistent English language. Reading tests were used to compare the frequency of written experience. In the article, Ellis and Hooper refer to other related studies concerning reading acquisitions. One of the statements that have been discussed is that the reason why the effect of consistency of mapping has been extensively studied is that of relating symbols and their sounds in reading aloud. When readers are able to create the correct pronunciations of new words or pseudo words; they must be able to relate lexical rules share graphemes and phonemes. Another assertion that has been discussed based
All literacy events are culturally created and situated, so they inherently convey significant cultural knowledge and shape cultural identity (Pérez et al., 2003). While biliteracy education is important for minority learners, it is often found vulnerable to societal-institutional constraints, such as uniform curriculum and standardized assessment (McCarty, 2002; Schwinge, 2003). Thus, I agree with Vogt et al. (1995) that teachers should be empowered to participate in collaborative interaction, in order to make informed decisions about pedagogical improvement and challenge the coercive power relations. Concerning its positive effects, I argue that alternative assessment should be developed to help teachers become more reflective practitioners
