The Crucibles is a book set in a historical time period about witchcraft. Throughout the book, it displays several themes that give fundamental ideas. As you read you will learn more about the concept of intolerance, hysteria, and reputation. Not only do these themes send a message, but also give the play a little twist. In the small town of Salem, the people show a strong intolerance of witch-craft and being on the devil's side. Intolerance is the unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or the behavior that is different from one's own. During this time period, the play was set in a theocratic society where religion and the state were together and religion was very strict (The Crucibles para.1). Judge Hawthorne and Danforth both play a key role in demonstrating intolerance by punishing those for witch-craftery. To show how strongly they disagreed with it, they were hanged for the crime whether there was evidence or none. The people in the town and even the surrounding towns were afraid just from knowing that witchcraft was going on and wanted an end put to it. …show more content…

Hysteria is the exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion or excitement among a group of people. Abigail expresses it when she accuses Mrs. Proctor of witchcraft and has her sent to jail. Reverend Paris tries to make himself look better in the community by falsely accusing people who could ruin how he looked in public. Thomas Putnam tries to get revenge from the Nurse's who they tried to say killed his wife's babies. The reason hysteria keeps happening is because of the benefits gained from it. It allows people to release that hatred build up without getting in trouble for it (Hysteria para. 4) .
