Is Atticus A Good Father

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird depicts Atticus Finch as a good father to his children due to his sense of fairness, his teaching, and his honesty. Atticus depicts fairness by treating his children and all others with respect and understanding. He teaches his children important life lessons and prepares them for when they go out into the world, and he sets a good example by always being honest. To be a good father, these are three very important qualities to possess.

Atticus Finch is a model father created by Harper Lee in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird. He is an important figure in the Maycomb, Alabama Community. He raises his children, Jean Louise Finch (Scout) and Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) with wide sets of morals, disciplines them, and is a true role model. Atticus allows his children to be individuals and does not try to change who they are. He teaches them fairness and equality among many different types of people in Maycomb. He is always teaching his children about how their actions may affect others, then, as a result, devices punishments to teach Scout and Jem valued life lessons. In many situations, Atticus can chastise his children, but he allows them mature and notice their own mistakes

Most people in Maycomb County respect Atticus, so his kids look up to him. Atticus Finch is a good father because he sets a good example, keeps his children on the correct behavior, and teaches his children valuable life lessons.

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee it discusses Atticus Finch and his two children Jem and Scout Finch. They are taught by there father to not invade people's privacy, and also the importance of tolerance. Mr. Finch lives in Maycomb with his two children. Atticus is a lawyer and he is currently about to do something he is not delighted about doing, nor pleased to do he has to defend a black man Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. In that period of time there was extreme discrimination and Tom was hated by all citizens there. But this doesn't change the way Mr. Finch treats Tom or his attitude about him. He does not care about the skin color you have and he really tries to instill this to Jem and Scout. Atticus seeks to instill moral values in his children, Scout and Jem, through the lessons he teaches them directly and those he teaches by his example.

In my opinion Atticus is a good parent because. For example he gently put scout in bed and talks to her carefully.”Atticus respects his children as individuals and as equals”(Andrea Badgley). He also will tell them what they need to know and and understands how they feel about subjects. He also disciplines them but not by yelling at them. he just calmly tells them whta they did wrong and not stress them

Atticus is a great parent for his time mainly due to his belief in pacifism and has cunning intelligence while cleanly demonstrating that to his children's and setting an example of a civilized person despite the Finch’s background.of favoring heated arguments and fights.

In some aspects, Atticus is a poor example of being a good parent but in others, he is a good parent, since he does not care a lot for his kids but he still is being a good role model, which is described when his kids got into trouble, others spent more time with them than he did, but he still loves his kids and teaches them the truth. One example of why Atticus is a bad parent is because when Scout got in trouble from fighting with Francis, she “ran to Atticus for comfort, but he said she had it coming and it was high time that we went home” (Lee pg 112). Firstly, the way a parent raises a child is shown in their children's thoughts and actions. Atticus Finch is an active parent in the lives of Scout and Jem. As Scout says: "Jem and I found our father satisfactory; he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment" (6) demonstrates that because Atticus has an active role, the children have a good and happy life. Atticus educates his children and instead of avoiding their questions, he answers them, for example when Scout asks Atticus what rape is, he explains that "rape was carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent." (180) even though he knows that Scout is young and still innocent. Atticus allows his children to call him by his name as a way of letting them know that he is not on a superior level but rather on the same level as them in the father-children relationship. Atticus, as a lawyer in Maycomb County, is respected by the town people because of his treatment of other people even when they are being rude to him.

Atticus is nothing short of a good father. He doesn’t treat his children like most parents would at their age. Atticus treats Jem and Scout (his children) like young adults. Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout, teaches his children to be respectful and courageous, while giving them freedom and independence. Atticus uses life lessons and first hand experience to guide his children through the right and wrongs of life and the tough situations that they are in. Through this, he gains the respect of his children and the community around him. Atticus is a good father because he teaches his kids how to live life for themselves and for everyone around them.

“To Kill a Mockingbird”, an acclaimed novel by Harper Lee, is recognized throughout the world. The novel follows a lawyer and his children prior to and during a legal case to defend a black male. That lawyers name is Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is not just an ordinary father. He teaches his children things no parent of the 1930s, or even the modern time period, would think of doing. His style parenting, compared to modern day parenting and parenting in the 1930s, is unique and is not traditionally the way a parent wants to raise their child.

I’ve always thought that Atticus was a good father, shown by the way that he brings his kids up and how he taught Scout and many life lessons.
