Nicholas Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” informs younger, upcoming generations on how the internet may have negative effects on the human mind. As time goes on and technology advances humans are becoming more dependent on the resources it provides. The way in which people abuse the internet is causing them to lose valuable skills, skills that are necessary for humans to be able to interact with the world and the people who live in it. Rather than allowing our minds to explore thoughts and try to figure out the answer people go straight to the internet. Over the years people have become more and more reliant on the power of technology without even questioning whether or not it is a good benefit to have everything at a push of a button. The internet and how it surrounds every aspect of a person’s life is to blame for the issues that upcoming generations are experiencing. Without intervention the problems are only going to get worse and slow down the advancement of the human race. Having information a click away is causing these upcoming generations to lose tenacity, sense of wonder, to develop focus issues, and to develop both mental and physical health problems. As technology has become more popular people are actually reading more. One study showed that on average U.S. smartphone owners aged eighteen to twenty-four send out 2,022 text messages each month and receive another 1,831 (Cocotas).
