Is homosexuality genetic? This a common question asked among society today. While some people argue that homosexuality is genetic, some people also believe that it is nature and not nurture. Genetics is the study of genes, heredity, and genetic variation in living organisms. Genetic processes work in combination with an organism 's environment and experiences to influence development and behavior, often referred to as nature vs nurture. One twin may understand and respond to their family or classroom environment differently than the other. A significant twin study among adolescents shows an even weaker genetic association. In 2002, Bearman and Brueckner studied tens of thousands of adolescent students in the U.S. The same-sex attraction concordance between identical twins was only 7.7% for males and 5.3% for females (Whitehead, 2015). Even more remarkable, most of the changes occur without counseling or therapy. “These changes are not therapeutically made, but happen naturally in life, some very quickly,” Dr. Whitehead observes. Most changes in sexual orientation are towards exclusive heterosexuality. The variability is even more pronounced among adolescents, as Bearman and Brueckner’s study demonstrated. “They found that from 16 to 17-years-old, if a person had a romantic attraction to the same sex, almost all had switched one year later.” His research shows that adolescents are influenced from the environment and that causes change in their sexual preference. A number of twin studies have attempted to compare the relative importance of genetics and environment in the determination of sexual orientation. In a 1991 study, Bailey and Pillard conducted a study of twins recruited from homophile publications. They found that 52% of monozygotic brothers and 22% of the dizygotic wins were concordant for homosexuality. 'MZ ' indicates identical twins with the same sets of genes and 'DZ '
