Is Mary Maloney innocent or guilty? While doing her everyday routine, and waiting for her husband little did she know this would be his last day coming home. At about ten minutes till five she heard Patrick’s car arrive. Marry started her day like any other sewing and greeting Patrick at the door. After she poured him a drink he finished it fast and got back up to get another. Patrick then told Mary he was leaving her for another woman, in this case she had a sudden reaction. With all the opportunities present, she did something she never thought she would do. She killed her husband with malice causing her to be guilty of second degree murder. After the horrible news Patrick gave Mary, in shock, all of her anger and confusion led to her sudden
Mary Surratt should have been executed . She should have been executed because she lied about knowing people .
I believe Mary Maloney’s actions should be condemned, by the reasoning of her actions as being wicked. Throughout the story Mary has committed homicide, plead not guilty for her husband's death and has given false statements to police officers, which under the Canadian law are all crimes. Regardless of the prior event when Patrick gives shocking news to his wife, which I assume is about leaving her, Mary’s actions are not acceptable. Even after killing Patrick there was a chance Mary could do the right thing and plead guilty, which she did not, making her continue with her bad actions. Overall, I believe Mary’s actions should be condemned because even if life is tragic there is no reason to kill her husband or a human being.
Mary begins the story as a doting housewife going through her daily routine with her husband. She is content to sit in his company silently until he begins a conversation. Everything is going as usual until he goes “ slowly to get himself another drink” while telling Mary to “sit down” (Dahl 1). This shocks Mary as she is used to getting things for him. After downing his second drink, her husband coldly informs her that he is leaving her and the child. This brutal news prompts the first change in Mary, from loving wife to emotionless and detached from everything.
Mary has one motive for murdering her husband. The motive is that she couldn’t accept the fact that her husband was leaving her. He says, “ ‘This is going to be a bit of a shock to you, I 'm afraid,’ he said. ‘But I 've thought about it a good deal and I 've decided the only thing to do is tell you right away. I hope you won 't blame me too much...So there it is,’ he added. ‘And I know it 's kind of a bad time to be telling you, bet there simply wasn 't any other way. Of course I 'll give you money and see you 're looked after. But there needn 't really be any fuss. I hope not anyway. It wouldn 't be very good for my job.’ " Although he didn’t say the exact words the reader can infer this when he states “… i’ll give you money and see you 're looked after. But there needn 't really be any fuss. I hope not anyway. It wouldn 't be very good for my job…” Some readers might disagree with her for killing her husband because he was leaving her, but she was truly in love with him
There’s plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right here and not even have to move out of the chair’’’ (2). Mary only ever want to please Patrick. She made sure everything was perfect for him and to never do anything wrong. She could not think of anything she had done to deserve such news. She immediately rejected the news and decided to pretend as if it never happened. Patrick was behaving so cruel to her while she was being nothing but nice to him. She even continued to make him dinner and he yelled at her saying not to because he is going out. This angered Mary resulting her to hit him with the leg of lamb and kill him. This shows that Mary is a sympathetic character because she was always compliant to Patrick. He had no right to disrespect her as he did.
Author also surprises readers, when he introduces conflict between a couple that used to love each other deeply. Diverting the story from love to betrayal, author develops an irony. In the story, reader sees two examples of betrayal. Ms. Maloney, while talking with her tired husband, finds out her husband no longer want to keep their marriage. Without giving any kind of reason, Patrick betrays her wife with a decision of breaking marriage. Mary shocks, when her husband, boldly, says, “ This is going to be bit shock of you”(P. Maloney) Author creates a total opposite picture of Patrick by describing him as a husband who used to give her wife surprises; he is now giving her shock in the middle of her pregnancy. Mary, who was previously shown as “anxiety less”(Dahl), with “a slow smiling air”(Dahl) and “curiously tranquil”(Dahl), had began to get upset and now inculcate her eye with a “bewildered look.” After betrayed by her husband, she, without any argue, she goes to the basement to look for frozen food. She decides to have leg of a lamb as a last dinner with her husband, but she smashes the frozen leg in to Patrick’s head with killing him. Mary betrays her husband by killing him and takes revenge of her betrayal. Later, Author confirms her as a murdered with the statement of “I’ve killed him”(Mary) from her own lips. Dahl, in the story,
Mary Surratt was sentenced to death by hanging for aiding in the president's assassins. She helped John Wilkes Booth and his associates kill president Lincoln and attempt to kill vice president Seward. I think Mary Surratt was guilty of aiding the president's assassins and attempting to help kidnap the president and i will tell you why.
Abraham Lincoln was dead. Her house had been used to plan the murder. The last day of Mary Surratt was upon her. The prison door opened and the convicted people walked in. Mary nearly fainted when she was exposed to the sight of the gallows. Three dug graves and open coffins stared her down. They were marched off to the gallows to be executed. Her case was one of the most controversial during the Civil War times. Was Mary Surratt actually a conspirator in the assassination of Lincoln, or was she just an innocent bystander? I believe that Mary Surratt is guilty, and got caught up in too many lies. I don't believe she should have been executed, but she was indeed guilty. Evidence lies in the fact that she knew about the 'shooting irons',
Mary Surratt only knew of the kidnapping, which should have given her a less harsh sentence then death. But Mary was only put to death because many people just wanted justice. Mary knew that Booth, (the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln), was going to try and kidnap the president because Booth found out that President Lincoln was going to watch a play in a theater close by, and was having a plan ready to try to kidnap the President of the United States (source two). This explains that she is only guilty for knowing about the kidnapping which is why she only should have been put in prison. Their was also
In source two, it says that in Booth’s diary it mentioned a plot to kidnap the president. This shows Mary had no knowledge about the plan to kill the president. She may have known about the kidnapping, but not the murder plot. Mary should have not been executed for not knowing about the plan to kill the president. Also, she should have not been executed for the kidnapping plan that did not take place. Source three states that Mary’s son may have been in on the kidnapping plot, however he was not in town. This shows that Mary had less connection to the crime. Which helps prove that she was innocent. If her son wasn’t in town, she probably didn’t know about the
The Guilty Party Mary Surratt should have been executed because she helped kill the president. Mary Surratt was not just caught for bringing the guns, there was also evidence that she knew many of the conspirators. One reason she is guilty is Mary Surratt brought guns to the tavern which were later later used to kill the president. In the text it reads, “According to him, on both occasions she inquired about “Shooting Irons” previously deposited by her son” (Source 2).
One reason she was guilty, is because she lied to the police and to the Federal Government. Mary lied to the Federal Government about many different things. First of all, Mary lied about knowing Booth and his plan about the kidnapping of the president. Second of all, Mary lied to the police and to Major H.W. about how she knew Paine and how he dug a gutter for her.
Mary is very manipulative in that she is able to create the character of the poor, pregnant wife, whose husband has just been murdered. She is able to convince the police to take pity on her, to mix her a drink and then to even eat the evidence, the leg of lamb that she has left in the oven. "Why don’t you eat up that lamb that is in the oven" (Dahl, p. 17). Mary realizes that if the police find the evidence she will go to jail. Her quick thinking and manipulative character results in the police officers eathign the evidence and therefore she cannot be charged of this crime. These actions show the complex character that Mary Maloney truly is.
Mary Surratt is guilty and should be executed. Mary is guilty because Booth would frequently visit Mary and her involvement in the kidnap.
The trial of Booth's conspirators is one that was rushed, not judged by a jury, and This case should have been the court case as we look at the OJ case a trial of the ages but instead it was rushed and anything that is rushed can never be fully right. So I believe that Mary Surratt was guilty but not to the degree of what was given. She did not know of the plot before hand nor when Booth came to the boarding house. She was just helping hold on to something that a paying customer dropped off and told her that they would pick it up later that evening. She was the first women in history to be hung and why she was hung was not a reason for it. However others will say she a guilty but to the other she was hung
