Everyone around the world tries to do something or find something that will make them happy or others around them.Either it would be in their carrier or in their work area. We all try to find that one thing that we enjoy doing. Sometimes when we do something that we regret doing because we know the consequences that awaits for us. Either you’re going to get in trouble with your loved ones or your going to get in trouble with the law. In these cases, its even worse when you are celebrity or an athlete that everyone around the world knows you. The person that I want to write about is Michael Phelps. He is known for winning 22 medals in three Olympiads. He holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medials. In winning 8 gold medials in 2008 Beijing’s Phelps took the record away from his fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single games record. In 2012 Summer Olympian London he won four gold medals and two silver medals making him the most successful athlete in the Olympics for the third time in a row.He is the long course world record holder in the 100-meter-butterfly, 200-meter-butterfly, 400-meter individual medley. He has won a total of 77 medals in major international long-course competition, totaling 61 gold,13 silver, and 3 bronze spanning the Olympics, the World and the Pan Pacific Champions. Phelps international titles and record braking
Memory Laps by David Sedaris is about an unexpected hobby paradigm shift. When he was ten years old he learned how to swim at the Raleigh Country Club. He would compete in the summer and was not the best, and didn’t expect to be the best but fighting to prove his father wrong is what got him motivated to improve himself. His biggest competition in swimming was Greg and Greg’s biggest fan was David’s father who couldn’t get over comparing David to Greg and degrading David. Alas, David’s fuel to prove his father wrong pushed him to win a butterfly race competition against Greg.
Apart from the entertainment and joy doing them, they are imperative to my physical health. These sports have made me develop many friends and learn about different cultures. I was a member of a swimming club in my former school; here we travelled many places for competitions. During these competitions, I would try to make as many friends as possible. My choice of friends was always different races from mine, which made it a thrilling experience. I am a social and outgoing person, who always likes to learn about other people. Even though I have earned several titles as an individual in swimming, what I enjoyed most about these sports is the fact that I could meet people from different cultures around the world. Learning about these cultures also played a great role in making me study
Imagine taking one step into a chlorine-filled arena. The humid air rushes onto your skin. An immense smile spreads across your face. This is because you know everything is about to change. In less than 24 hours you will be holding a glistening gold medal in your hand, standing up on the podium while the Star Spangled Banner blares for the whole world to hear and tears will stream down your face. Taking one look back at your coach, Teri McKeever, you realize if it wasn’t for her you would not be here. Graciously, you run up, swing your arms around her body, and embrace her in a powerful hug that says it all. Swimming is a very intense sport and consumes every second of a swimmer’s free time. However, putting in hundreds
As a casual reader of the sports section of this newspaper, you come across many articles depicting the triumphs of local athletes. However, very rarely do these articles describe the actual athlete behind the success. Athletes come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. They range from the incredibly talented to the horribly uncoordinated. Some are great teammates while others would rather be a one man team. Certain athletes seek out attention from the people around them while others are modest and stay in the background. The fact of the matter is that there is a wide spectrum of different types of athletes that exist in this world and no two athletes are exactly the same. However, each can be put
Page 19 I agree with this. One must work hard to achieve. For example Kawas, who was once not even the top 5 swimmers on the team. However, now he makes swimming look so simple and not many people are aware of the amount of time and effort he puts into his training, which pays off with his many gold
Continuing his winning streak, he went and won fifty-two National Championship titles and broke over fifty records in swimming. He continued winning all the way to the Olympic Trials for Paris 1924 and swept past his rivals. He was on his way to the Olympics where he won 3 gold medals in the 100 and 400 free and in the 4x200 freestyle relay. He also took home a bronze alongside the mens' water polo team. He was an astounding athlete and all of his rivals feared
America is the place of unlimited potential; anyone can be whatever they set their mind to. Everyone has the ability to become wealthy. From rags to riches, a poor young child can become the greatest in the world, and this is what happened to Jim Thorpe. With his endowed abilities, Jim Thorpe became the greatest, most well rounded athlete in the world. Even though Jim Thorpe’s childhood was rough, he rose above it to become the greatest athlete of the twentieth century, and he left a legacy still being felt today.
During this positivity mission, one of the most memorable moments occurred at the Niagara LSC Championships. A few newer faces joined us this year, which was a perfect opportunity to get to know some of the swimmers in other levels. Following one of the new swimmer’s races, I turned to him on the bench and complimented his excellent race. I will never forget the smile looking back at me when he asked in disbelief, “You know my name and you watched me?”. My answer was simple, “Of course, you are my teammate”.
My hero has demonstrated leadership qualities, his whole life. In high school, he was the Senior Class President. Moreover, at USC, he was the baseball team’s team captain where he earned the title Most Hustle and Trojan Spirit in 1986. Selected to play baseball for the 1984 USA Olympic team, he could not compete due to what doctors thought
On August 8, 2013, a college student from South Dakota State University was struck and killed by a car while running alongside the road near Otsego, Minnesota. He was training to achieve his dream of being a Track and Field contender in the 2016 Summer Olympics. My cousin Phillip LaVallee would never reach his goal. Coming home from a baseball tournament in Italy, I didn’t receive the news until five days after the traumatic incident. An incident that has greatly affected my family ever since. The effect this tragedy had on my life was huge and it taught me to never take anything in life for granted and live to achieve your goals and dreams.
How did attitudes towards Jesse Owens, as well as his successes, and struggles affect the status quo of race in sports. That is the question that this essay attempts to answer, by exploring Owens' early life, to his first success in 1933, to his record setting eight individual NCAA championships, four each in 1935 and 1936, to one of his greatest achievements on May 25, 1935 during the Big Ten meet at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he set three world records and tied a fourth. Then moving to arguably some of his most important victories in 1936 when Jesse Owens represented the United States of America in the Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. It is there that he defied the odds by winning 4 gold medals as well as
For a long time ever since I was in high school that I could remember I wanted to be like my cousin Eric trice. A former University of Oregon baseball hall of fame, and former MLB player. He is also the creator and owner of Sparq athletic training equipment. A lawyer and now a physical therapist that still practices law. Well though I am a 4 time all American for the 400m I haven’t quite accomplished some of those amazing feats. But I will say I have accomplished the greatest thing that only two percent of the world have the opportunity to achieve. That is to be on salary and to represent of the most amazing brands in the world, and for the second time around I am to enjoy it for
This paragraph is about the olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. He was born on June 30,1985. He has 23 olympic gold medals. His coaches name is Bob bowman ("Michael Phelps"). A quote that can support this facts is "In April 2014,Phelps announced he would
Sports are part of our lives and inspire a lot of person all around the word to become a champion. I think almost every competitive athlete aspires to complete at the Olympic Games one day and to hope to accomplish awesome performances. Few are those who reach this level and make it a living but we all know that it is possible. Some people say that you can only be an Olympic champion if you have a lot of talent but I don’t believe in this vision. I think you need way more than talent to succeed and that the key to success is hard work, passion, determination and confidence. I this text I will talk about Canadian’s performances and show why we should be proud of our athletes and I will also talk about the emplacement of the games in Rio.
Jesse Owens states, “In the end, it’s [it is] extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Pull all these together, and even if you don’t [do not] win, how can you lose?” Michael Phelps is a determined Olympic swimmer who never gives up. On March 25, 2014 Phelps spoke for the people of speakers.com about sacrifices. Phelps was able to prove to the audience that sacrifice is for the greater good through body language, vocal variety, and the impact he made on the audience.
