Certain costume characteristics such as color, fabric, class, and silhouette where used to help portray details about the characters in the movie It Happened One Night. Fabrics are an important characteristic for costumes because it helps to distinguish quality and cost. Ellie was dressed in silk in the beginning and end of the movie. When Ellie was with her father on his yacht and when she went back home with her father she was wearing silk dresses on both occasions. This tells us that they are from upper class and have money to be able to afford silk dresses. When Peter is introduced he is wearing a trench coat which is probably made from a cotton or polyester blend. Through most of the movie Peter is seen wearing the same suit which looks like a cotton polyester blend. …show more content…
During Ellie’s journey to New York she was wearing a black blouse with white stripes in the shape of a V and a long skirt that was solid black. The silk dresses she wore during the beginning and end of the movie were a pearl white. The silk dresses were very elegant and upscale showing her upper class status and her snobby personality. The black blouse with white stripes and the black skirt were meant to fit in with people that would ride a bus. From the moment we met Peter in his solid beige trench coat at the bus station to the ending when he met Ellie’s father in his nice black suit, Peter’s clothes were nothing but solid colors from beige, grey, and black. The only time Peter wore something that was not a solid color was when him and Ellie first stayed together in a motel room and he put on his robe that was black with white dots. The solid colors that Peter wore helped to distinguish that he was middle class with a proud personality. Class can be defined as quality or cost of a costume or designs and patterns on a costume. The first silk dress worn by Ellie had a pattern on it and it appeared to be
Have you ever wondered what people in the Elizabethan Era wore? Fashion was just as important in those days as it is to some people today. What people were wearing mattered to others, and even the government. During the Elizabethan Era clothing, accessories, and cosmetics were all a part of daily life.
According to Adler, Rosenfeld, and Proctor’s Interplay, clothing is “a way for some to strategically hide ‘problem areas’ and accentuate ‘assets’” (book). The first time that clothing is used interpersonally in the movie is towards the beginning, when Frank and his father go to a store to get frank a black suit. Frank’s father gets the suit for Frank to wear so that Frank could act like he was a personal driver for his father, so that people would believe that Frank’s family had a lot of money. This example is a good representation of what clothing is according to the definition because it meets all aspects of the definition. The example shows how Frank’s father “strategically [hid] ‘problem areas” (book) such as the lack of money, and how he used the clothing to make it appear as though he has
In the 1934 film, It Happened One Night directed by Frank Capra, follows two characters Ellie Andrews, played by Claudette Colbert, and Peter Warne, played by Clark Gable. Ellie is trying to escape her overbearing father and escape a life of unhappiness. This romantic screwball film joins two opposite characters from two different economic backgrounds. Screwball comedies often display irreverent humor, clever dialogue, subtitle humor and an odd element of historical relevancy in the time they were most popular. In It Happened One Night, the common screwball comedy elements were displayed in the first nine minutes to establish the characters, the economic and social backgrounds of both the main characters and the rest of the films plot
Ever wonder where the strange fashion choices of society’s favorite Disney movies originated? It might be a bit of an understatement to say that the apparel of men during the Elizabethan Era was odd, but each piece of their outfit had a crucial role to play in their daily life. Clothing worn during the Elizabethan Era was greatly dictated by the Sumptuary Laws, the wealth of the individual, and fashion trend of neighboring countries.
Unlike other clothes worn in the film such as the red dress, this gown has no distinguishable features since it is so dark. Instead of focusing on the judge and his awful verdict, the viewer focuses only Margot’s black gown. By focusing on her gown, Hitchcock is able to force the audience to feel Margot’s own pain and suffering associated with being falsely accused of the murder. The same experience happens to the audience when Margot becomes aware that Tony was responsible for the foiled murder. In this important scene, Margot is wearing a dark brown jacket. The jacket is dark enough that the audience can see her emotional distress, but light enough that we become aware that Margot found closure in these series of unfortunate events. As noted by a movie reviewer, Margot’s “shapeless brown jacket [is as] different from the red lace dress as you can get” (The Blonde at the Film). Hitchcock and Carrere use slim-fitting jacket in the last scene to show that Margot has moved on past Tony and is no longer stuck in between both relationships. By playing with the different shadings of Margot’s clothing and contrasting her dresses with other previous costumes, Alfred Hitchcock is able to add another dimension to Margot’s pain and suffering surrounding and help the audience understand the context behind Tony’s spoiled
After watching the film, It Happened One Night directed by Capra in 1934, it is a classic Hollywood narrative that is classic romance story, but I did notice that it did not followed the motion picture production code for particular scenes in the film, which I think helped create suspicion and action during the story. Additionally, the film It Happened One Night was different from the other films we watched in class.
It seemed as if the costumes were meant to be literal and just go with the theme of the musical. Seeing the actors switch from school regulated uniforms dress code costumes to what seemed to be a rock band’s attire was a bit annoying, because when they were constantly ripping apart their vests and snapping it back together. Some of their double sided costume components would be submerging out with each change, making it very distracting. Not only were the costumes difficult to distinguish, but some of the characters were as well. With three actors having to play two different roles, it was hard to tell the difference between Hanschen and Rupert, played by Bryan Jones, or Ernst and Reinhold, played by Fern Jones, or Otto and Ulbrecht, played by Tyshawn Gooden. At one time I thought the Wendla and Melchior were sister and brother, because both characters’ mother was acted out by the same actress and it made me extremely confused at first. The only thing that separated the actors playing multiple character roles were them changing the style or color of a shirt or dress. The small change in clothing wasn’t enough to help me differentiate the different character
In the film, the costumes of the nuns when they sing in the choir, remains the classic nun costume, with their habits in black and white, even in the final song. On the other hand, the costume in the play, in the first song they sing is similar to the habit of the nuns, but along with their fame are changing the costumes in color and in the drawings with glitter; they Being more and more strikings. Regarding the costumes of the protagonist and her companions, at the beginning of the play, in the small place of alternation, have a style of the 60s with bell-bottoms, short dresses and high boots with high heels.

Other factors, aside from their clothes, also make the class system apparent in this society. The attitudes of the wealthy and poor are incredibly different, which is shown through how they wear their clothes. It is very obvious that the wealthy, higher class hold themselves to higher standards and look down upon those in the lower classes. The quality of their clothes, accessories, and hygiene are much better than the less fortunate people. It is terribly sad to see but the higher class, have beautiful clothing that make you want to reach out and touch to see if it is real.
Elizabethan clothing and fashion was known to be one of the most significant time periods in English History. People believed that social rank and wealth depended on what family one was born into, however it was much more than that. The style of clothing would be easily recognizable today because clothing, accessories and embellishment were all apart of daily life. Clothing during this time period played a big role in determining who associated with who, what your identity was and social rank during this era (“Stubbes on Ruffs.”).
The people who lived during the Elizabethan Era were not allowed to wear whatever they like or desired. Their Fashion choices had to be followed by a strict law! The English people chose to establish social classes by the colors they wore and this had an affect on costumes used in theatre. Queen Elizabeth I followed the sumptuary laws, which was only certain classes were consent to wear specific fabric and colors. Therefore in plays the actors could only wear certain colors for their costumes that displayed what role and class their character was in. The clothes worn during this era was a result of Queen Elizabeth’s sumptuary laws, which had an affect on costumes used in plays, and each color a person wore had a significant meaning.
On special occasions, long, floor-length gowns are worn by women as a show of elegance (Leed, Drea). Juliet is to be courted by County Paris, so she dresses her best during the Capulet party. Because of the Capulets elevated social status, the family outfits were made of more expensive fabrics and brighter colors. As dictated by the Sumptuary Laws, only families of higher ranks were allowed to wear crimson, gold, black, silver, and white colors (Hanson, Paige), so during the Capulet party, Juliet wears a white gown, to symbolize purity and virtue (“The Color White”), with gold embroidery displayed on the forepart of the dress. The gown is made of silk and velvet fabrics which is good for elegant gatherings and ruffs and sleeves are made of

So sometimes fashion cannot distinguish between social classes and clothes worn by an upper class individual can be similar to clothes worn by people of a lower class.
