Deliverance by James Dickey was published in 1970 and presumably takes place in 1970’s Georgia. Specifically, the book starts out with the main characters living in a large Georgia city, with the protagonists then deciding to embark on a canoe trip in the Northern Georgia wilderness. Essentially, the novel begins in an urban setting, and then subsequently moves into a more rural setting where the bulk of the book takes place, along the fictional river known as the “Cahulawassee”, as well as the within the wilderness and small towns surrounding it. The book is told through in the first-person perspective of the leading protagonist; Ed. The book is full of suspenseful moments that are sure to keep the readers on their toes. As far as theme goes, I believe that the novel’s primary overarching theme is that of man versus the wild. The wild being referred to here can be considered both natural forces as well as wild mountain men as well. The book essentially places urban life in a rural setting, and allows all chaos to ensue. Emotions of helplessness and weakness constantly influx the reader as situations arise in which they cannot do anything to assist the characters in trouble. One could argue that the definitive message and final takeaway from the book would be that as tempting and as peaceful nature can seem at first glance, it really is just as corruptive and dangerous as urban …show more content…

Dickey only wrote three novels throughout his career, Deliverance being his first, followed by Alnilam and To the White Sea. Deliverance is more similar to To the White Sea than to Alnilam, as the former tells the tale of an American soldier struggling to survive in World War II Japan, whereas the latter focuses on the more intimate storyline of a blind man struggling to discover more about the life on his deceased son. If the reader enjoyed the intense feelings of survival and adventure that Deliverance had to offer, they would more likely than not be intrigued by the similar qualities of To the White
