The Japanese culture is unlike any other in the world. It has long been known for it's excellence in education and it's strong background of family and religion. The Japanese way of life is an assortment of art, literature, music and more; it is nothing short of spectacular. I will explain about some of the different aspects of the Japanese life style as well as take a cultural look into the life of the Japanese. Finding a place to live in Japan isn't easy. Limited supply and high demand result in tiny, hutch size homes with high rent rates. On average, dwellings in Japan have 91.92 square meters (about 989 square feet) of floor space, which is not very much compared to the average house sold in the United States. In Japan it is best not to try to break the silence, as you might appear insincere. It would be better to relax and appear patient with your Japanese counterpart. You should be considering the value of what has been said. What is not said can be just as important as what is said. If one point is said, the listener is expected to understand the others points that are not said. You must read in between the lines or pick up on what has been implied. Often the subject of a sentence is not stated in so many words; it is just understood "who" or "what" is being referred to. In general, the Japanese are much more self conscious of their appearance in public than we are in the United States. This self-conscious attitude is very evident when they leave their homes for a quick shopping trip or the day's work. Most Japanese would rather spend money on clothing than on food. In the large cities such as Tokyo, your clothing serves as a sign of social status and wealth. Young secretaries will save months of salary just for the perfect designer purse that they can wear on the bus or train to work each day. The dress apparel and styles are also more formal and conservative unlike the more unusual dress styles in western society. In general, women do not wear sleeveless tops, shorts, or revealing styles. When going to work, most women do not wear slacks or pants. To blend in to a
Japan has a very rich and unique culture, unlike any other culture in the world. The Japanese are close and united, and willing to help each other, to the point that they would even risk their lives for one another. Their culture has certain aspects of it that every nation should have. In his book, John Hersey explores the effects that culture and environment have on an individual’s views and belief through analyzing a stereotypical Japanese man, an Americanized Japanese priest, and a widowed Japanese woman and how they react similarly to the bombing of Hiroshima. The influence of Japanese culture has an astounding impact on the reactions of Hersey’s characters.
Japanese people regard schooling as one of the most important aspects of the growth and development of a child and therefore their entire school system is more competitive and higher achieving. Before beginning this task most of my knowledge on Japanese schools was based upon small pieces of information provided from class activities, previous teachers, or stereotypes.
Japan is a collectivistic culture country, they put more emphasis on group members, group obligations, and group goals that on the individual (Hamilton, 2014, p.74). Their culture is more relationship oriented, valuing empathy, listening, preserving friendships and saving face for the individual and others (Hamilton, 2014, p.75). Japan consists of a high context culture, relying minimally on spoken words. This is a tightly bound culture by experiences, family, and tradition (Hamilton, 2014, p.76).
Often in America, the public is educated about the victories of the nation, such as in World War II (WWII); however, they are unaware of the after effects it imposed onto other parties (enemy nations). Specifically, Japanese people lost their defenses, and the lifestyles of the citizens were significantly modified. Moreover, Japan was part of the Axis powers during the war and gained worldwide attention when the island attacked Pearl Harbor, a United States Naval base. This event caused the Americans to join the battle and eventually overwhelm the Japanese and forcing a surrender in 1945. Post WWII, Japan’s failure in the war was responsible for a cultural change in the country that is still present in modern day, which led to reform in family dynamics, mentality adjustments, and perceptional alteration of women. Also, whether young or old, all were exposed to this change, and those that lived in family styled households together, were the first to experience their relationships shift.
Japanese and American culture differs in a plethora of ways, but also have several similarities, Showing that no matter how different people are they still have some sort of common ground. Japanese culture is based off of long held traditions that are derived from ancient Japan. American culture, however, is ever changing due to the nature of American society. Japanese culture favors those who conform, while punishing those who are different. On the other end of the spectrum, American culture applauds those who are different. Japanese and American cultures have drastically different social hierarchy and family roles while still having similarities in pop culture.
For the most part, traditional cultural values and constructions are strongly honored among the people of Little Tokyo and those living in Japan. For example, many of the people I spoke to maintained monogamous relationships and grew up in homes where it was highly valued. Moreover, divorce is uncommon for these relationships, unlike here in America where divorce rates are exceptionally high. It likely has something to do with the way the Japanese people present themselves out in the public sphere. The store owner told me the Japanese are very mindful of appearances, and how people would think of you because of it. Certain things like divorce may in turn cause

Japans history dates back almost 53,000 years and is filled with interesting and fascinating events. Most of Japans actions have left the major world powers in the world stunned. The base of this amazing country is astonishing just by itself. The base is a bunch of active and large under water volcanoes. Japans uniqueness from the rest of the world ranges from its culture to its very interesting history to the change in government every few hundred years and their trading dilemma with petroleum and their assortment of fish that they export. Japan as a country is so very appealing and kind compared to the rest of the world its no wonder that it’s geographically separate from the rest of the world.
Japan is a country of many cultures. Japan’s most renowned is the art of the samurai and currently, urbanization. Due to the American occupation in the pacific, Japanese moved from a cultural masterpiece, to an eastern constitutional monarchy. Which is generally effected by a western influence.
My husband has his family and extended family such as uncles, aunts, and cousins in America. His family and extended families had the positive opinion about Japanese and Japanese culture. One reason that his family and extended family have the positive tone toward Japanese is that they think Japanese women are obedient, feminine, and domestic which are similar to their perception of women. In addition, many of his family think that Japanese are educated and hard worker.
Japanese fashion is one of the most remarkable things about Japan. It is another dimension in itself, complete with subcultures such as the Gothic Lolita and Kogals. Many people are intrigued by how Japanese fashion developed and people all over the world try to dress up like the Japanese because in Japan, there is no such as thing as conformity. Everyone has their own distinct style that sets them apart from others, no matter what subculture they belong to. People all over the world consider Tokyo as one of the fashion capitals of the world.
I have learned so much in Japan, from their religion, to art, to literature. Noh Theater is one of the first forms of theater in the world. The movements are precise and the actors wear rigid masks. Zen Buddhism is very popular here in Japan. Zen Buddhism is about enlightenment through personal meditation. A novel written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu, titled Tale of Genji, talks about high courtiers in Japan.
Japan is strongly collectivistic versus the United States being individualist. (textbook) Japanese culture focuses more on family and their community around them.
