Independence from England became a possibility for the colonists after the French and Indian War, which took place from 1754-1763. They took the initiative for achieving this right after the war. Since France was no longer an obstacle, they anticipated fewer repercussions. The after effects of the war resulted in an abundance of new taxes. This burden fell on the shoulders of the colonists and they were determined to take action change. These ideas to bring about change were influenced by ideas of the Enlightenment, which included John Locke and Thomas Hobbes as key figures. Locke and Hobbes were both English philosophers and political theorists who had alternating views on their concept of ideal government. “The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments of their duties and obligations. This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution.” –John Adams, 1818 (3) Enlightenment thinkers played a role in shaping the platform that led to the American Revolution. One such philosopher and political theorist during the period of enlightenment was an Englishman named Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679.) He supported the theory that all humans are naturally ambitious and evil. He believed that the best type of government was a unitary form of government to keep everything in order, also known as a monarchy. He
