In the book “The Crucible” there are many points in the story that have you at the edge of your seat. Many of the characters had a different approach of handling the situations that they came across. Their decisions shows their personalities and what archetype they belong to. A person's archetype shows their basic human motivations One of the main characters in “The Crucible” is Abigail. She played a big part in the book with her attitude and selfishness. I would place her in the ruler archetype because of her entitlement. In the beginning, she was accused for doing witchcraft in the woods. She threatened the three other girls that she was with in the woods, and told them not to confess about being in the woods dancing naked. For instance, “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(1042). Abigail lied multiple times including the time she said “We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all.”(1042). When she walked into the room where the trial was being held, everybody around her backed off because they don't want to mess with her. …show more content…
He shares a deep love with his wife and is committed to her. Even though Proctor had an affair with Abigail and denied it for the longest time he wanted to protect his wife from the truth. He truly regrets what he did and wouldn't go back to Abigail. Abigail still wanted to pursue the affair, but John Proctor told her “Abby, I never give you hope to wait for me.” (1043). Proctor still loved his wife and wanted the best for her. In the trial Elizabeth was trying to protect Proctor in the beginning. He didn't want Elizabeth to go down for his wrongs in life so he told her “Elizabeth, tell the truth!”
John Proctor is motivated by the guilt of having the affair with abigail. John Proctor says “God help me, I lusted”(Miller 49). The evidence above shows that he regrets lusting and having an affair. If he didnt say what he said then he would be eaten alive by his guilt. John Proctor says “ But it is a whores vengence”(Miller 49). This shows that abigail wants to get back at the people he loves just to be with him but his guilt stops him from it. Saying this caused him stop her vengeance and cause himself to be the bad one. All the evidence above shows that he felt guilt and to put an end to her vengeance he had to be
He does this with the intention of exposing Abigail’s spiteful character and her main desire to replace his wife. John Proctor says “I beg you sir, I beg you -see her what she is…She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave. And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance and you must see it. I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now” (110) John Proctor exposes not only Abigail’s sins, but also the fact that he was infatuated with Abigail. He knows that by doing this he would dishonor his name, but he deems it as the only solution because people were falling into Abigail’s manipulation., John Proctor also fights for everyone not just his wife. John Proctor continues his attempt to voice out the truth even though his wife was exempted from being punished because she was pregnant. He defends other people because he knows their innocence. “The people signing it declare their good opinion of Rebecca, and my wife and Martha Corey...these are all landholding farmers, members of the church, sir- they’ve known the women many years and never saw no sign they had dealing with the Devil” (93) John Proctor protects everyone’s names because he recognizes that they have no reason to be jailed, thus showing his kindness and consideration.
The Crucible is a complex and intriguing novel with events, characters and themes comparable to almost every period of human history. It is common for humans to fear change and what is unknown, in the play The Crucible this is witchcraft and the devil, in more recent times it can be seen in post World War Two and Cold War United States, through McCarthyism. The themes in the crucible are as important to people in the 21st century as in Salem in 1692. These include justice, reputation, hysteria, intolerance and empowerment. All of these are common themes throughout human history. The characters in The Crucible are also important to people of the 21st century as they can teach us a little bit about people around us and their reactions when
Many men don't think things through before acting, so it is believed John Proctor was an impulsive character throughout the story. "You can play brand new to all the other chicks out here- but I know what you are". John Proctor did what he felt was right by having an affair with Abigail but he wasn't thinkingof the concequences. Elizabeth knew all along and acted different around her husband. The outcome of John Proctors choices turned out to be a horrible mistake since his reputation and life were put on
“Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again,” happens to be a quote from John Proctor whilst he was speaking to Abigail Williams in Act One of The Crucible. John Proctor happens to be a hard-working farmer from Salem with strong Puritan beliefs. Although John is a religious Puritan man he has some downfalls within the play The Crucible. His first downfall would be him committing adultery with a seventeen year old named Abigail Williams, who was his servant at the time. After committing said adultery with the teenage girl, he keeps it a secret from his wife until she fires Abigail and kicks her out of their house. After that his wife is accused of being a witch by Abigail because of him not wanting to be with Abigail anymore. He finally tells the truth about the affair while in court and is accused of being a witch after screaming “God is dead,” he then was hung three months later. So, if there is one character I can most closely relate myself to it would be John Proctor. Three character traits that I share with John Proctor is that we are both honest, hard-working, and caring.
Elizabeth Proctor is the wife of the main character John Proctor who was trying to save their marriage, but John’s affair with Abigail put Elizabeth in danger. Elizabeth’s goal is to save Proctor’s and her marriage by telling the truth to each other. But the truth may have later come back to “haunt” her and she came to a point where she didn't tell the truth about John in the court. Elizabeth feels pressured because of Abby and she want’s the truth about her to be out in the village so they do not have to suffer because of her. Proctor says, “I am only wondering how I may
Starting with describing Abigail the harlot/compulsive liar one could say she has no moral nor ethical beliefs which is true. Abigail is seen as the villain in The Crucible. The willingness to kill to be loved by John proctor shows how her own emotional needs are above all others in her head. She manipulates her own friends and sends innocent people to death without
John proctor knew he had a wife but he still decided to have an affair and now that he did that abigail wants elizabeth dead.here is a the first reason why i think john proctor is the blame “Abby i may think of you softly from time to time but i will cut off my hand before i'll reach for you again”(Miller 6).because of the tension there is a lot of hate between abigail williams and elizabeth proctor.this shows that it was john proctors fault he didn't have enough courage or bravery to tell abigail no.Here is my second reason why i think it was john proctors fault “Because it is my name! Because i cannot have another
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, a sundry amount of characters change over the course of time in this book. Some of which are very notable dynamic characters. In this magnificent story there are very dynamic characters such as Reverend Hale and Elizabeth Proctor. There are also many pieces of worthy evidence and quotes throughout the whole entire book.
John Proctor was one of the people that sacrificed his life but it was for his family. He didn’t want to lose any reputation from his name if he did live and for his family to be poor. He was doing what was best for his family and community. The people in the community thought that he was a big role for them because he was a leader to many of them and he always did good things for them. Abigail messed it up for him but it also falls back on him too. John made a silly decision and Abigail was leading him on knowing that he would get in trouble for his actions. Abigail has power over many people but she’s smart about who she accuses. She was able to tell lies and have the other girls would back her up in the lie so it would make it seem like
John Proctor is continuously changing throughout the book. In the beginning of the Crucible, John Proctor is very caring and helpful toward Abigail Williams. He does not want to get her in trouble for the affair that they had anymore then he wants to. In Act one John said to Elizabeth Proctor his wife, “I am only wondering how i may prove what she told me Elizabeth…”(Miller 53), this is John standing up for her in a way that won't get Elizabeth hurt by saying that he cannot tell what actually happened between them two. This is him saying how he doesn't want to tell anyone about it because he does not want to get her in trouble and there is no proof of them talking in private so he could end up getting himself in trouble and not Abby. Then,
Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, outlines the lives of one particular group of people living in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch hunts in 1692. The story revolves around John Proctor, an ill-mannered farmer who fears the downfall of his respectable reputation due to a secret affair he previously has with Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris’s niece. Towards the beginning of the book, Proctor mainly focuses on maintaining a creditable character, blinding him from the witch-hunt hysteria in Salem.
Although John Proctor has shown his side of being acute he is also an individualistic person in the play The Crucible. Self-reliance is shown throughout the play as he demonstrates this quality. Miller makes many connections to this characteristic when we first get a description of John Proctor. Miller described him as being, “not easily led” (1). His beliefs stuck with him throughout the trials but at some points disrespected others and treated them harshly. This trait of him being egotistic led him to lie to his wife and keep secrets from the trials. He was then later questioned by authorities and still kept his mindset of a determined man. He protects his name when he is about to be hung. John Proctor towards the end of the act demonstrates
Abigail Williams is the main foe in The Crucible. In it, Abigail represents many traits and characteristics, but three prime traits would be she takes supreme authority, she is cunning, and archaic. Abigail, also known as, “Abby,” has revenge and sabotage seeking intentions that lead her to lose exactly what she was wanting, and that just so happened to be one of the themes of the story. Actions have consequences and Abigail learned just that in the end. **Put quote
When we are introduced to his character, it is apparent that he has been unfaithful to his wife (Elizabeth) with a lady named Abigail. Following this, we see that his wife has been accused of witchcraft, and it is Abigail who made the accusation. Proctor realizes that it is because of his actions that his wife has been accused and he
