Disney claims that the clip of John Smith being saved by Pocahontas is “responsible, accurate, and respectful.” I believe that the clip is not historically correct and that Disney's claim is wrong. There are many reasons why I believe this.
My first reason is that Pocahontas was too young to fall in love with John Smith. Her age in the movie is older than it really was. Pocahontas was born in 1597 and Smith was captured in 1607 then released by Chief Powhatan in 1608. Therefore Pocahontas was only 11 years old when Smith was with the tribe. (Tool 1.1: Timeline of events related to pocahontas and John Smith)
My second reason is that Pocahontas did not save Smith's life at all, it was a ritual. When Pocahontas “saved” John Smith’s life, it was
One of the things Pocahontas is most known for saving John Smith’s life. It all started when one day, the Pamunkey tribe caught a white man. The man was to be presented to Pocahontas’ father, Chief Powhatan, that night. The village prepared large feasts, and Pocahontas was thrilled to finally get the chance to see one of the mysterious outsiders who had come to their homeland. When the man was finally brought out, many villagers screamed in horror when he glanced at them, although Pocahontas didn’t understand why everyone was afraid of this man to be called “John Smith”. Pocahontas’ father declared that the handsome man with the blue eyes was to be killed! The toughest warrior poised his arms above his head with a club in hand and… Pocahontas
John Smith surprised many by becoming a significant leader and a ray of sunshine in an otherwise increasingly desperate situation. He strategically involved the Indians in order to increase the chance of survival of the colonists. This strategy caused him to develop personal relationships with Indians; some good, some bad. Although captured and sentenced to death twice by Chief Powatan, he was saved by Powatan's daughter Pocahontas. Many historians however, believe that Pocahontas did not actually save John Smith; they believe he was mistaking an adoption ceremony for his execution. David Price writes that there is no way to describe what happened other than an impending execution. "Nothing is known about seventeenth-century Powhatan adoption ceremonies, nor is any other tribe in North America known to have had an adoption procedure comparable to what was undergone by Smith."(pg.243).Either way, the romance between Smith and Pocahontas emphasized in children's stories is seemingly impossible; Pocahontas would have been eleven years old upon acquaintance with John Smith. In Paula Gunn Allen’s “Pocahontas to her English Husband John Rolfe”, the representation of Pocahontas that is being portrayed is that of a strong Native American woman. She is tired of her husband being unappreciative of the things that she does for him out of love. It makes the reader question if she really loved Rolfe from the way that she speaks to him like he her child and not her husband. This can be seen in the first few lines of the poem when she states “Had I not cradled you in my arms, / oh beloved perfidious one, / you would have died” (Allen 1-3). When analyzed and interpreted,
What does a whistling mouse and a catlike bunny creature have in common? They are both the logos of two leading animation companies: the Walt Disney Company and Studio Ghibli. While Disney and Studio Ghibli vary in their style, production, and overall themes, they both produce award winning and adventurous movies for Western and Non-Western audiences alike.
They name their son James Joseph Parker. Their third son died in infancy. Isaac urge the government to give Fort Smith’s 300-acre of military reservation to help fund the public school system. In 1884, the government gave Isaac the military reservation to the city of Fort Smith. In Arkansas and the territory of Oklahoma, it is rumored that the town folks of the time would say, “ There is no Sunday west of St. Louis-no God west of Fort Smith.” The number of how many people Isaac hung will never be known. Some say that it is 78 to 80 people, others say it was more than hundred. He heard thousands and thousands of criminal complaints about almost everything. Some of the complaints every had disputes and violence between the Indians and the white
Discuss the quest for truth and meaning in the Joseph Smith History, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich.
The statement “exhortations of the old professors, and a cry – I am right – you are wrong was introduced in their stead” appears to be a complete fabrication of Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Smith wrote his history in 1832, about three years after meeting Oliver Cowdery. although it was not published in print until 1842. Then two years later his story was changed by Oliver Cowdery or perhaps by Frederick G. Williams, Warren Parrish, or Warren Cowdrey…or maybe by all of them combined. Who knows? We don’t know for sure if Joseph Smith composed his history as he wrote it or if he was copying from another record. In either case his initial statements were written by him in his own handwriting, not that of Oliver Cowdery. Indeed the
For instance, her age and appearance. In the movie, she looks like a young adult in her early twenties. She is tall, and her body is mature for her age. In addition, she falls in love with John Smith, who also seems to be in twenties. However, it may surprise one to know that Pocahontas was around eleven years old when she met twenty-seven-year-old John Smith in 1607 (“Pocahontas: Her Life and Legend”). Disney portrayed Pocahontas to be much older than she truly was in order to fulfill a realistic love story with John Smith. Moreover, Pocahontas’ clothing may or may not be one-hundred percent true; According to nps.gov, Pocahontas “…would have worn little to no clothing and had her hair shaven except for a small section in the back that was long enough to be braided.” While in the movie, Pocahontas has beautiful, long black hair with full-coverage dress. Likewise, John Smith’s appearance was altered. He is shown to be cleanly shaven, tall blonde with piercing blue eyes. However, Captain Smith was “…short, had a full beard, and wore fluffy pants. He did wear the type of armor shown” (Morenus, “The Real

In this paper I hope to explore the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas is quite famous in elementary school classrooms. This is because her story fits within the larger story of the colonization of America. Also, her love affair with John Smith made a good Disney movie. How much of what I know about her life comes from Hollywood, and how much of what I know about her life comes from reality? I will examine an academic database source to find out.
In the movie, Pocahontas John Smith was always shown as the hero who brought the native together and Pocahontas was just part of the plan, but this is not true. Without Pocahontas role as the Beloved Woman, John Smith may not have been alive on the day of his execution. Partly because of the role of a Beloved Woman “...called on to decide whether any captive-leaders and warriors alike would be executed” (Allen 333). This illustrates the importance of Pocahontas and her role within her tribe and that her decision could not be overridden by anyone including the chief. Also with this turn of events clearly states that the role of women in the tribe was fairly important because they held a greater risk “...involved in a great world change in these
If the government federal, state, or local) decides to get involved in the conflict, I think it would be Pointless. By law, Disney did not violate any regulations because they acted responsibly, Disney responsibility is to ensure the product they are marketing is safe and innovative. If the government decides to get involved, it should be ensure the food regulations are meeting the requirement to prevent
In the story Captain John Smith was about back in England after his trip to Jamestown, Va, Capt. John Smith tells the tale of his journey, particularly his lost romance with Native American maiden Pocahontas. They meet and gradually fall for each other when captured Smith is saved from certain death by the girl.
The saving of John Smith by the princess Pocahontas is being actively debated by historians to this date. Some believe full heartedly that John Smith was honest in his account of the events, but others see many flaws in what he says. These doubts seem to be justified as many parts of his account seem to be more of a fairytale than the movie. One historian who believes John Smith is lying in his account of being saved by Pocahontas is Helen C. Rountree. She points out that “in Smith’s later writings, not once, but three times his life is saved by ladies of high rank when he is ‘at the moment of direst peril,’ and ‘the women were not depicted as real people’” (“Reflecting on Pocahontas”, Tremblay, JSTOR). This makes historians wonder what part of John Smith’s tales are fact and what parts are fiction. Also, John Smith did no publish his writings until quite a bit after Pocahontas had passed away. Therefore, Pocahontas was not there to validate the writings of John Smith and there were other witnesses to such events. This makes it very easy for John Smith to simply “make-up” his story as he goes to help increase his fame and
I the defendant Eric S. Fraden am being sued by Walt Disney Studios for using their content for my own educational purposes, and a non profit video using clips from their movie and adding my own additions to it.I stayed in the four factors which are the purpose and character, the nature of the copyright, the amount and sustainability i used, and the effect of the content i made. The first one i used was the purpose and character that was used to create the video was very non profit which means i didn't want to make any money off of it i just wanted to be for the children a educational purpose. And second the character I wasn't trying to steal Walt Disney's creativity i just wanted to use their amazing work, and make it for the children
