Joining A Cult
Cults use several different methods to lure individuals into their organizations. While they may adopt many methods, the concept to recruitment is the same; target a vulnerable individual and “brainwash” them into joining the cult.
Before the method is discussed, it is very important that the mental state of an individual is discussed. Previously, it was mentioned that cults tend to target vulnerable individuals, and the understanding must remain, in this case, that vulnerability refers to a weak psychological state of an individual. Oftentimes, recruiters will target those who have gone through a major transition in their life, such as a move, or quitting a job, or leaving education, where an individual may feel like something is missing from their lives. Due to the lack of a solid social group, an individual may feel alienated meaningless, powerless, and helpless. Recruiters seek out these characteristics and target the individual, as this is their most vulnerable state, where they are desperate for a social group to be a part of (Furnham, 2014). The first phenomenon that occurs in cult conversion is a seeming “zap” into the cult mindset. Davis (1996), in his article Joining a 'cult': religious choice or psychological aberration, refers to this as the "rays from outer space" theory. In this, a young person from a well-off family comes across a cult recruiter, and is easily manipulated into joining the cult. The second approach to cult recruitment is as follows; the recruiters have individuals convert through a brainwashing method, carrying severely manipulative conversations with the individual.
