Here stood a village, an ordinary village, consisting of farms, markets, wells, and a fair amount of houses for its population. It is the Thorpes village. It has everything any other village has, but it is very small, both in size in population. This is strange due to its age, as it’s one of the oldest villages in the area. It has always remained small and always will be due to a savage tradition made by the village’s founder, Amund Thorpes. The tradition states as follows: ‘No two people shall share their day of birth in Thorpes. If this occurs, the village people must decide to sacrifice one of the two.’ Jorgen Helgi is a farmer of Thorpes, with a beautiful wife, Disa. Jorgen’s life has been very simple in Thorpes. “I will be good, it says. Please let me out. I will be good! They never answered. The child used to scream for help at night”(LeGuin, 3). “In the Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” the author achieved the idea of sacrifice must be upon the suffrage of others by using pathos to get an emotional reaction from the reader. The child is chosen to live a miserable unfair life to make the society prosper instead of having an easy death. While in “The Lottery” their form of sacrifice is stoning the chosen one to ensure they have a good harvest. “ Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. It isn’t fair she said. A stone hit her side of the head.”(Jackson, 7). Even though their idea of sacrifice is cruel it’s fair because everyone is eligible to get chosen to sacrifice through the ticket. Therefore, the authors portrayed the idea of sacrifice must be upon the suffrage of others by choosing the method of
Every head of the household, most of the time the father/husband, was obligated to draw a paper form the black box and who ever got the piece of paper that had a black dot on it would have then have to put his/her name in the box along with the rest of his/her family; once the every member of the family had drawn a paper whom ever got the one with the black dot on it would be considered the scapegoat and would then be killed by the villagers using stones. Even young kids were forced to participate; in this ritual it did not matter whether you were a women, a child, or how old one was. All the village kids had been preparing all day for the ritual by putting stones in their pockets and placing some in a stack for when the time came they would be
A train barreled over Joseph Hewins' body on a wintry evening in 1845 in the Massachusetts Berkshires. Hewins had spent the workday shoveling snow off the tracks, only to be killed on his trip back to town when a switchman got distracted. Hewins left behind a wife and three children, who were poor even before his death. His widow sued but lost at every level. Had the train merely chopped off Hewins' leg, the railroad would have paid. But in the perverse logic of that time, when a man died, he took his legal claims with him. And so the thinking went for most of the century, until something unheard of began to happen. The courts started to put a dollar value on a life--after death.

Helweg-Larsen, Cunninghamn, Carrico, and Pergram examined the non-verbal communication style of head nodding between genders versus their peers and professors. Head nodding is one type of backchannel (a response that is a short and non-interruptive gesture to show the attentiveness of the listener) that is a universal sign of agreement. Helweg-Larsen and her colleagues completed this study to figure out the interactive effect gender and status has on the nonverbal domain of acceptance. This study conducted has tried to enlighten on the gap in literature based on which gender nods in acceptance more, whether it is because of their agreeableness or whether that gender is just “wired” to do so. Helweg-Larsen and her colleagues have implied that
