Kanye West once said, “Everyone’s always telling you to be humble. When was the last time someone told you to be great?” Kanye West is a world-renowned Hip-Hop artist with over 200 awards and accolades as a solo artist. From, The College Dropout, to The Life of Pablo, every album that West has released to date has been different from the previous one. The amount of originality, patience, ingenuity, and passion that he devotes to each of his eight studio albums illustrates the genius who is Kanye West. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, for example, personifies what Kanye thinks is his,“ most perfect album,” and can even be described as an epic. With songs such as “Gorgeous”, “All of the Lights”, and “Power” the album quickly became one of the most talked about albums of 2010. During the conception of this album, West was at the peak of his career, and there seemed to be no way he could improve. The record,“Dark Fantasy” stands as a testament to his domination in hip-hop when he challenges the question, “Can we get much higher?” This album so fantastic that there was a short film made about it named after one of the songs on the album,“Runaway” which was directed by West himself. It serves as the music video for the entire album, inspired by many other music-related films such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Prince Rogers Nelson’s Purple Rain. The film illustrates a romantic relationship between West and a half-woman, half-phoenix which represents the idiom of living and learning and is set to music from his album. Although this particular album may not be West’s most accredited album, this album was a visual masterpiece. Not only was the tour a visual masterpiece, but it enabled West to work with new people like Saul Williams, Paul McCartney, and Trent Reznor. Even though he did not have a natural singing voice, one of his most significant inspirations, Michael Jackson, encouraged him to keep trying. Not being able to sing certain notes, West switched to Auto-tune. Stand out songs like,“Love Lockdown”, showed the boldness in West’s risk-taking when using Auto-tune. Nonetheless, West was still hurting and mourning the death of his mother and felt truly lonely after His ex-fiance, Alexis Phifer and he broke up. “Coldest Winter”, is an extremely haunting track, of a broken down West, singing a mournful goodbye to his mother. Then, there were the music videos. There was pop-art expressed in “Heartless”, experimentation in,“Welcome to Heartbreak”, and a tribal theme in “Amazing”. Lastly, is Track 12, “Pinocchio Story”, a live freestyle that West performed while putting on a full album show at the Hollywood Bowl.
