It tells the real life tragedy of the fatal “Station” nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The story is told using flashbacks and analysis in each chapter of the book. Overtime, there were numerous noise complaints from nearby institutions. Julian had to figure out a way to avoid losing is club due to the noise. After a while he found his solution. According to Barylick, “ [Julian] took remnants of soiled red carpet from the club and put them up on the walls as a backing material” (204). Julian then decided to nail foam on the walls to keep the sound insulated. There weren 't very many noise complaints after this. The foam served its ' purpose, but a few years later it would be a serious fire hazard. In the year 2000, Michael and Jeffery Derderian bought the nightclub from Julian. Despite their lavish lifestyles, they were very frugal when it came to their business ventures. They were notorious for not being credible businessmen. It 's no surprise that they mishandled the structure that they bought. When they analyzed their investment, they noticed the foam on the walls. The Derderians decided to just place another layer of foam on the wall (Barylick 129). There were two different types of foam applied. One was polyethylene (PE) and the other was polyurethane (PU). They are both flammable and illegal on structure walls. The local fire marshal, Denis Larocque, would ignored this many times when he did inspections on the nightclub. He even increased the Station 's occupancy from 317 people to 404 people. The Derderian brothers were very happy about this because they could make more money. Larocque didn
The non-fiction novel The Black Hand by Chris Blatchford is written very poorly. To put it bluntly, this book has the entertainment value equivalent to that of an episode of Two and a Half Men. The Black Hand is extraneous, redundant, and over-all plain boring. If you're interested in reading about something that will keep you on the edge of your seat, filled with the deception, drug use and murder, in the Mexican mob; read the Wikipedia article and spare yourself the pain of reading this book.
Throughout the past couple of months my fellow peers and I have been studying the topic ‘challenge’ and how it affects our lives and people around us. In our everyday lives we are confronting challenges, some are as small as walking up a few steps, and some are larger and more challenging that could be life or death circumstances.
In the Pulitzer Prize winning civil war novel Killer Angels, Michael Shaara covers five days of the historic battle between the Northern and Southern United States at Gettysburg. Both the North and the South fought for freedom, although they did not have equivalent definitions of freedom. The North and the South were unwavering in their beliefs and their hope for a better United States, but what the two butted heads the most on was slavery. The South was a primarily agrarian region which relied heavily on the agriculture of crops like cotton and sugarcane, both of which required intense manual labor, unlike the North who was more so industrialized; however, as William Preston said, it was not cotton that was “the south’s king” but it was slavery that made them so prosperous. The South relied on slavery because having many workers to tend to these cash crops without having to pay them saved farmers and plantation owner’s money that they could use to buy more slaves that put out more work leading to more land for more crops, or to have more money to pay their taxes. Many Southerners like William Preston thought that owning other people was their divine right as white men. The Civil War was started over the North and South’s conflicting views on whether they had the “civil” right to own or not own slaves. The Northern and Southern states developed themselves much differently than one another because of their agrarian versus industrialized economy. As the states developed they
After reading the novel Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix and watching the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire 1911 documentary it became apparent that there were several similarities between the two, however, there are also many differences. Haddix wrote Uprising from the perspective of three young girls over the period of a few years leading up to the fire; while the documentary simply covered the indecent of the fire and used first hand accounts of civilians that were around the building during the event. Although Uprising and the documentary on the fire may tell it a little differently, both tell the history of one of the worst disasters in New York’s history.
Forks Over Knives, directed and written by Lee Fulkerson, examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. This film follows multiple doctors and their experimental process of attempting to understand the connection between the human diet and the many human ailments that occur in the world. Forks Over Knives creates a very persuasive case for eliminating meat and dairy from the dinner table.
In this essay I intend to explore the narrative conventions and values, which Oliver Smithfield presents in the short story Victim. The short story positions the reader to have negative and sympathetic opinion on the issues presented. Such as power, identity and bullying. For example Mickey the young boy is having issues facing his identity. It could be argued that finding your identity may have the individual stuck trying to fit in with upon two groups.

Some disasters are so impactful, that they forever change the course of history. On March 25, 1911, one such event took place. The infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Fire occurred that day, and left one hundred and forty-six people dead in its wake. While many at the time thought the story would soon pass, and with it all the potential bad publicity, the story of the fire spread quickly, and outraged many people. As a result, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire ended up changing many
On the afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the 10-floor Asch Building, a block east of Manhattan's Washington Square. This is where 500 mostly young immigrant girls were producing shirts for the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Within minutes, it spread to consume the building's upper three stories. Firemen at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders weren't tall enough. Exits were locked, and the narrow fire escapes were inadequate. Panicked, many jumped from the windows to their deaths. People on the street watched in horror. The flames were under control in less than a half hour, but 146 people perished, 123 of them women. It was the worst disaster in the city's history.
The building of the Station Nightclub was constructed in approximately 1946. Many restorations and repairs were made to the building since the time of construction by different owners to fulfill their business needs. The building was a wood-frame construction with wooden shingles on the exterior walls that also included a flat roof, but the interior walls surrounding the stage were staffed with sound proof polyurethane insulating foam. Windows were located on the north side of the building and on the east side of the front entrance. All of the windows had security bars on them (this could be an issue!). The building had only four doors; a front main door, a bar side exit door, a
Have you ever thought, you 're doing a great job slowly killing yourself and the Earth while walking through the supermarket pushing a shopping cart filled with an assortment of western dietary staples? Probably not, right? If you 've recently watched the Netflix documentary Cooked, released in early February 2016, this self-analysis may be a part of your shopping trips for the foreseeable future. Cooked was produced by Alex Gibney, and narrated by the man whose book, by the same name, inspired the series itself, Michael Pollan. Michael Pollan is a professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, and food activist with many accolades, including several New York Time best-selling books. Cooked is filled to the brim
Newman begins her book by telling the stories of two different rampage shootings, at Heath High School and Westside Middle School. Once she establishes the shooters and the subjects of her study, Newman lays out her thesis and explains that her research shows that many factors contribute

Although this is a troubling story there is much to be learned from it.
The book “Among the Thugs” from 1992 written by William Buford, describes Buford’s own experiences with hooliganism. The text is about the British football culture and the hooligan-ism that follows. Throughout the text, we follow the American Journalist Bill Buford, who is located at a train station in Cardiff, where he for the first time became acquainted with hooli-ganism. Hundreds of Liverpool supporters robbed the station, terrorized the area and fought with everything and everyone. His reaction to their loud behavior and performances over-whelms him a lot. Later in the text, Bill meets a united ultra from Manchester United's firm, Mick. After hanging out with him, Bill is persuaded to join the firm on matchday. This was the beginning of a whole new day for Bill Buford as a thug and a member of the firm. This analytical essay will be based on comments from Bill Buford experiences, the structure, language, receiver and the purpose of the text.
The building had survived for decades without any incident; except for some minor renovations, it was the same structure that had existed since1946. It was a nightclub named Julio's in the 1970s, and in 1972 the building was
