I am really looking forward to this course. I hope it is going to expand my horizons and open me up to Indigenous culture. I am metis but my father and grandfather consider themselves apples-red on the outside, white on the inside. They spoke of no positives of having native blood and were/are constantly racist toward their own kind. They both feel a hatred towards Indigenous people because of the stereotypes associated with them, and have pushed the culture away instead of embracing it and proving stereotypes wrong. My grandfather died hating who he was and I want to prevent that in myself and my dad and I think the more I can learn about Indigenous thought the more prepared I will be to do so. I really enjoy Thomas king’s writing style
In When We Fight, We Win by Greg Jobin-Leeds it says that “comparison can block compassion both for others and for ourselves.” I agree with such statement; I think that listening is a skill you learn throughout time. One can pretend to listen without really getting anything out of the conversation that one is having with that other person. In the Compassionate Listening workshop, I got to do it with Rachel Kurland and I sit and listened to her talking about the moment her friend treason her. I tried to understand her plight, why would she not cut that friendship off, I understood she loved her friend, however, I could not resist bringing my biases to our conversation. I asked myself, why is Rachel, such a good, loving, and smart person,
The single stories we carry with us can be harmful as they often lead us to making inaccurate conclusions resulting in stereotypes. Knowing this has caused me to question the knowledge that has been given to me about the First Nations culture. This is because when I was younger, I was always taught that First Nations people only lived in igloos and had long braided hair. This has resulted in false information being passed on causing me and others to believe a lie. This course has opened my eyes, allowing me to recognize that we should always question what we hear and read because it's not always the truth. Single stories cause the viewer or reader to only learn one colonizer's point of view historically resulting in people making assumptions.
During the duration of this class I have learned a lot about native american culture. Reading Antelope Wife, The Indian Killer, The Toughest Indian In The World, and The Lakota Way have allowed me to take away many life lessons. I originally chose to take this class to gain knowledge I could apply and incorporate into my art education and I have gained knowledge that will be very helpful for that. But after taking this course I have also gained a great sum of knowledge that was interesting to learn about and that I can live by in my everyday life.
I want to recognize both Doctor Garmon and Ms. Hilleary King for going above and beyond the call of duty to provide patient care. There was a power outage in building 302, on July 21 2016 at 4:30 pm and a patient appointment scheduled for 5 pm in the same building with Ms. King who happened to be working an extended
This course is interesting thus far. I enjoyed my first assignment about Color Consciousness, the video put things in perspective for me on how words can affect someone. I am slowly finding more information on Pacific islanders for my course assignment, very interesting to say the least. I'm also learning that racism is not just between two ethnicity's it can be within the same group of people. Although some may say they have no discrimination towards someone that appears different from themselves what they don't realize is that people say prejudice things without knowing what theyv've said is taken in a different way from someone else. There will always be discrimination and prejudice, found in the world I think that this class alone, could
On 04-14-2016, at approximately 4:05 pm, Ms. Forney called Mr. King to respond to the Courtyard to inform him of a situation that had taken place. Upon arrival to the location Mr. King was informed by Ms. Forney that two students had gone into the 100 building and got something from under the chairs in the search area. Mr. King took both students back to the area to conduct a search. While searching Isaias Amaya-Miranda, Mr. King witnessed Joel Nathanael Perez-Corea trying to put something down the front of his pants. Mr. King got Joel Nathanael Perez-Corea and asked him what he had in his hand. Joel Nathanael Perez-Corez showed Mr. King a small amount of Marijuana in a small plastic bag. Mr. King then contacted SRO Friday to come to
Over the past eight months since I graduated from Nobles, I have experienced dramatic growth in my understanding of the world and the privilege/responsibility of my Nobles education. Experiences such as AP Euro with Mr. Denning, Noises Off with Todd Morton, The Nobleman with Mr. Kinard, and PHP/NEDTalks with Ms. Maldonado form the foundation on which I experience academic and personal life in college. As I learn to redefine my relationships with faculty and peers from Nobles, I find myself forever grateful and indebted to the pedagogy of relationship-based learning.
Those who do not understand people who are different than them are quicker to judge and have stronger prejudices. They often discriminate against those with different beliefs or backgrounds. This is because often humans naturally fear the unknown. Without a basic grasp of these different indigenous groups, they fear them and therefore act out against them with racism and prejudice. By taking this class, I have the opportunity to be educated about these people and to understand them better. It is my belief that if everybody had this information from a young age, people would be a lot more accepting. There is so much that would need to be done to wipe out
Maybe you still aren’t sold — okay. You try explaining what’s happening — You can’t. It is not because you’re dumb. It is because there is no reasonable explanation to be found. Repeating the mindless banality one hears from the news pundits is just another form of compartmentalization. The best people can offer are bits of accompanying facts that contribute to the rise of Trump. What makes it unbelievable is how the whole thing has been assembled.
Now if I didn’t read the story, and just found this quote during my quote hunt, then I would have just thought it was an inspirational quote about learning. However, since I did read the story, he was literal about this. I thought it was crazy how he would let Jeannette sink for a couple seconds, take her out, then throw her back in the sulfur spring again and again. It’s an interesting way a teaching, especially when it is risky. This really shows how Rex doesn’t like to baby his kids, but to challenge them. It’s a method of being forced to learn how to do something which to me is a fascinating way of guidance. Also, I think it helped Jeannette and her siblings in the long run since they are put in a lot of predicaments that they have to handle
To begin with, this course has greatly enhanced the depth of my understanding about Indigenous culture and education. Personally, there are numerous aspects of the curriculum that have intrigued me. With that being said, one element of the course content that I found significant was the lesson done in week 9 about post-secondary education for Indigenous people. This topic is of great relevance to Aboriginal education as it requires reflecting holistically on the quality and manner in which education is provided for Indigenous students. Moreover, this area is imperative as it explores external factors that inhibit post-secondary education from being an option for Indigenous students, and how to rectify it for the future. Everybody deserves the
Reflecting back on the knowledge I had previous to the course about First Nations people, was nothing compared to the knowledge I have now. It is upsetting reading my reflection because; I am able to see how inaccurate information is being taught about the First Nations culture. It refers to them as people who are addicted to alcohol and poor. In reality, our culture is the one that
The film names Godzilla is what we saw last week and the film began with the nuclear weapon exploded to the sea. Unfortunately, the boat names “Lucky Dragon” was near the place where nuclear explored and they were influenced by the nuclear weapon, the one of the people that are from the “Lucky Dragon” finally died after the six months. After the nuclear weapon exploded, the Godzilla was waked by the nuclear weapon and started to attack Japan. Like the William Tsutsui said in his book that “the original Godzilla film (Gojira) was more than just a guy in a rubber suit smashing a model of Tokyo. Some people argue the movie Godzilla does not have a deep meaning because it copied the idea of other movies and they just want to make money. In my opinion, I have a different opinion which agrees with what William Tsutsui said in his book because the film Godzilla shows the anti-nuclear, anti-war and also tell people that science’s both sides for humans which also reflect the influence of nuclear.
As many people say, past events shape you. Whether these events are positive or negative, this affects how you live your life, act, and help other people. This was exactly the case in the story of Moses shown in the movie, The Prince of Egypt. Moses had a very rough past, being put in the basket with the possibility of being killed really set everything up for him. When he was taken in by Pharaoh's daughter, he was just a few months old, so he really didn’t understand what was going on. As he grew older, he started to get confused about his past, and who it really was that he was with. However, Moses was able to overcome all of this, and really show the qualities of a hero. In this movie, the notion of a hero was shown through Moses from when he was a child until when he actually got to be a leader. His uncomfortable childhood helped contribute to these qualities with all of his mistakes and confusions really teaching him, and also when Moses got to lead the Israelites into safety these qualities really shined through.
Sam Taylor (CEO), once said, “ If we aren’t willing to change and keep up with innovation someone else will.” If someone isn’t motivated to move forward and create new ideas, there will be someone else that will succeed in their place. People need change sometime, or their lives would be dull, static, and boring. Change is crucial to a person’s life to show dynamic differences in their characteristics. It is important for people to be flexible and open minded in different experiences to handle future circumstances. Change is the key to determine one’s future. In J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, the character Tinker Bell is dynamic as illustrated by her words, actions, and motivations.
