Kobe Bean Bryant was a stellar athlete who is considered to be one of the greatest of his generation. His ability to finish near and far from the rin was unsurpassed by anyone. Kobe’s flair and style was unparalleled by anyone and gave onlookers a rush on adrenaline as the ball fell gently through the rim. Collecting an astonishing five championship wins, Kobe is one of the most accomplished players to play the game. Son to a less famous player, Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant, Kobe seemed to be destined for basketball (Britannica.com). He was drafted in 1996 by the Hornets but the Lakers decided to take a shot with the rookie ( Britannica.com). This made him the youngest player to play in the NBA at the time, an impressive feat on its own (CNN.com). Kobe’s athleticism and young legs proved to be a lethal tool on the court, his first season was so good that he caught the attention of many analysts. His early prominence lead to his being elected for the NBA all star game his rookie year (Britannica.com). It was at this time another legend joined the Lakers, Shaquille O’neal. It was at this point the team earned the nickname “Showtime Lakers.” Kobes talent and Shaq’s raw size made their games a complete circus for games to watch. The young point guard would dazzle an opponent with an array of moves then throw the ball through the air to his counterpart who would barely have to jump to slam the ball into the rim over his opponent. Lakers fans became so obsessed with the team, that even celebrities would pay outrageous amounts to sit as far as thirty row away from the bench (ESPN.com) It was the season of 2000 that glory struck of the young Bryant. He took his team to the playoffs, and won. At the time, Kobe had begin to understand the gravity of what he was when he heard people talking about putting him in the hall of fame. (Britannica.com) Although he has not yet been inducted, he has requested for Michael Jordan to do his speech (CNN.com) Shaw even poked fun at Kobe during his induction speech (ESPN.com) After leaving the league at the end of the 2016 season he gave his famous “Dear Basketball” speech. In the speech Kobe details his love for the game but speaks of the pain his body is suffering because of it.
