Ku Klux Klan 2
Abstract
The Ku Klux Klan was formed in Tennessee during December, 1865. They were originally made by former confederate soldiers to keep balance in society. After their job was done they went years without being heard of again. This time they grew in popularity and used their power to intimidate others to get their way. They killed and harassed many people.
After years of destruction beginning from the late 1800’s all the way through mid 1900’s, they lost their power. There are still many small Klans heard of today, but less extreme.

The Ku Klux Klan is known today as one of the most hated terrorist groups in
American history. They began as a group to do good and help others, but as they grew in popularity good becomes terrorism. After many years of this groups’ massive destruction, they slowly subside. Although the terrorism has ended, there are still groups today with multiple cases of discrimination towards other races. Creation of Klan In December of 1865, a group of six former Confederate veterans founded the first branch of the Ku Klux Klan as a social club in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866. “Ku Klux” supposedly derived from the Greek word “kyklos.” 1 Another member then added “Klan” to tie the name together (“Ku Klux Klan”, 2001, para. 3). In the summer of 1867, local branches of the Klan met in a general organizing convention and established what they called an “Invisible Empire of
In order to achieve their goal of re-establishing white supremacy. Founded in 1866 by former confederate veterans, the Ku Klux Klan would be established as the most powerful terrorist organization of its time. Aimed at dismantling the possible overthrow of white supremacists in the United States by the increasingly powerful African-American community. The KKK would target black southerners and any white persons who would help them. Nathan Bedford Forrest would become the primary leader during this era titled the “Grand Wizard” he would push the organization's agenda throughout the United
After the civil war most of the former confederate states were laid in ruins. It was in this moment that six confederate veterans got together at a local law office of Pulaski Tennessee on June 9th 1866 and the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was born. The original purpose of the Klan had little to do with the menacing behavior for which it will be known as today. The KKK was founded as a social fraternity much like a college fraternity without the college, purely as a source of amusement. To further the mystery all public appearance would be done in disguise. Outlandish costumes consisting of sheets, hats, and masks were created. Obscured sounding titles such as grand cyclops and grand magi were created for office holders, new members would be given the
- The most notorious organization was the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was organized in Pulaski Tennessee, in 1866 to intimidate former slaves who voted and apprehended political offices during Reconstruction. The Ku Klux Klan history came all about with the situation in the South following the harsh Civil War. The Southern States were in distraught and the defeated white people were humiliated and felt like they had to get revenge and gain their power back. The goal of the original Ku Klux Klan was to fight against the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain "white supremacy. The Klan was led by merchants, planters, and Democratic politicians. They considered themselves as the most respectable citizens
The first era Ku Klux Klan was formed in Tennessee on December 1865 at the end of the civil war. The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a movement for white supremacy. It was formed as a violent group that relied on fear tactics to stay in power. As Jonathan M. Bryant said in an article “The Klan 's organized terrorism began most notably on March 31, 1868, when Republican organizer George Ashburn was murdered in Columbus, Georgia.” George W. Ashburn (1814 - March 30, 1868) was a Georgia politician assassinated by the Ku Klux Klan in Columbus, Georgia for his pro-African-American sentiments. He was the first murder victim of the Klan in Georgia. This the first of the Klan’s organized terrorism it was soon followed by more.
This started “the rise of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) it grew more during the beginning of the 20th century. It was a “secret terrorist organization founded the Reconstruction” (Sonneborn 14).
A year into the Klan, leaders wanted to create a hierarchical organization. As a result, in 1867, Klan’s from all over the South gathered in Tennessee and gave former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest full control of the Klan (The History Channel, 2005). Later interviewed by a Charleston newspaper, Forrest boasted that the member count exceeded 40,000 men in Tennessee alone and over 550,000 in all the Southern states (The Charleston, 1868). Never achieving organization, local chapters continued to go about their business, settling things in a way they deemed fit, this, in turn, would be one of the reasons for the decline of the Klan.
The Ku Klux Klan was a secret terrorist organization that was created by six well educated Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee in the December of 1865. Their main objective was to restore white supremacy through acts of violence such as murder, against both Black and White Republicans. The KKK had eventually spread to every southern state, and Klansmen would often terrorize republicans regardless of their race. Members of the KKK believed that African Americans were inferior to Whites and did not believe that Blacks deserved equal rights. Although the rebel groups were outlawed and made illegal, many of them remained in existence and appeared after the reconstruction had ended. This proved the Reconstruction to be ineffective as many Southerners were still fighting against the government and opposed them. In addition, African Americans were still deprived of their rights by these
` Today there are still Klan connections such as the Bayou Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, in
The second group was discovered in 1915, and developed public in the early 1920s, they disrupted Catholics and Jews, and dwelled on conflict to the Catholic Church. The first Klan that evolved was in the southern United States in the delayed 1860s, then distinguished by the early 1870s. This Klan supported radical traditional currents such as white dominance, white ethnocentricity, anti-immigration, anti-Catholicism, and anti-Semitism, classically communicated through terrorism and at individuals or groups whom they opposed. especially in later repetition, specifically in unknown areas of the Midwest and West. Although the crew of the KKK swear to confirm Christian honesty, practically every Christian faith has completely denied the KKK. This second formation for the klan interacted the similar code words as the first Klan, while adding mass flaunting and cross combustions. They focused on engagement to the Civil Rights Movement, often using homicide and brutality to abolish anyone they disliked. It is camouflaged as a hate group. The third and recent manifestation of the KKK occurred after 1950, in the form of small, local, isolated groups that use the KKK
The Klu Klux Klan was formed in 1866 by a group of Confederate soldiers in Pulaski, Tennessee. It was a social club or fraternity for the veterans but later had different views and became a terrorist group (PBS). The name of the group came from the Greek word “kyklos” meaning circle and then they added Klan to make the name flow (History.com Staff). It did not start with the thought of malicious activity. They would have secret meetings and elaborate ceremonies to discuss how they could stop reconstruction after the civil war. The members would wear white sheets that covered their whole body and pointy white caps to make them appear taller. This was an all white group and ended up being one of the deadliest terrorist groups (EyeWitness to History). General Nathan Bedford Forrest was the Klu Klux Klan’s first “grand wizard,” also known as
One of the Ku Klux Klan’s mains purposes was to protect the way they live from African Americans, Jews, and Catholics. They had the biggest impact on African Americans. The discrimination and the violence of the group was well known through different communities. The Klan was also known for crucial beatings and murders against the black population. They tried to emphasize that the blacks were a subpar race.
In 1867, the Ku Klux Klan formed in Tennessee. The Ku Klux Klan were persecuted African Americans in order to prevent them from voting. They favor the Whites to dominate the United States. Black Codes were passed in the South which prohibited blacks from owning property and restricted their rights including their labor
The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a social club by a group of Confederate Army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee in the winter of 1865-66. The group adopted the name Ku Klux Klan from the Greek word "kyklos," meaning circle, and the English word clan. By 1944 the Ku Klux Klan had lost most of its influence and membership. It was revived during the Civil Rights era and continues today as a small organization that continues to stage demonstrations in favor of white supremacy and fundamentalist Christian theology. William J. Simmons, a former Methodist preacher, organized a new Klan in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1915 as a patriotic, Protestant fraternal society. Then and Now: KKK membership peaked at four to five million in the mid-1920s; today there are an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 Klan members among roughly 100 groups. Although the Klan still reverted to burning crosses, torturing and murdering those whom they opposed, the organization became a powerful political force in the 1920s. This new Klan directed its activity against not just blacks, but immigrants, Jews, and Roman
Eight months after the Civil War, in the south the government was weak and there were no jobs available. On Christmas Eve of 1866, six confederate veterans started a social hate group in Pulaski, Tennessee. The six confederate veterans were John Lester, James Crowe, John Kennedy, Calvin Jones, Richard Reed, and Frank McCord. The group started off as just wanting to have fun and keep themselves entertained. The six founders were well educated and came from wealthy families. From their Greek knowledge, they use the word kyklos meaning circle and then added the word Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was then born. Nathan Bedford Forrest was the first leader of the Klan. He was known as the “Grand Wizard.”
