His parents and uncle both dabbled in music, and his great uncle even appeared in the 1930’s film King of Jazz. A small glimpse of light appeared, however, when his uncle bought him his first electric guitar for his fourteenth birthday. He began to play classic rock songs and enjoyed bands like the Beatles and the Ramones. Sadly his new guitar was not enough to keep his mind off the troubles at school, and after turning seventeen he dropped out of high school. Having nowhere else to go, he took his few possessions, and slipping into poverty, began living under a bridge (Kurt Cobain

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20th, 1967 and died on April 5th, 1994. In his lifetime, he gave a voice to many young people who didn’t think they had one, contributed most to the popularization of the Grunge genre, and had a lasting impact on the music industry. Known as the “spokesman for a broken generation”, he was looked up to by many young people around the world. It was him that sparked the wave of many underground, local or well-known grunge bands all across America and Europe that goes on until today. As for the music industry; Kurt Cobain basically made alternative rock into a sub-genre that had its own niche which made Billboard recognize it as what brings independent music together.
""Sorry,” he [Grohl] beams. “I’ve just got to check my e-mail. I want to see if my daughter got into private school.""(Page 622, Paragraph 5) This excerpt shows the reader that despite Grohl being a multimillionaire, and a rock legend, he is still a human who is worried about his daughter getting into a school. Just like every other parent, who is worried and hopeful for their child. Grohl also shows his compassion and continued love for his previous band, Nirvana, "Despite his shiny, well-equipped studio, he decided to record Wasting Light in his garage at home, and in a nod to his lo-fi, DIY roots, recorded to tape rather than digitally on a computer." (Page 624, Paragraph 24) In an attempt to give a 'nod' to Kurt Cobain and the DIY Era of grunge sounding music of the early
It was messy, careless, and loud. Thankfully, all of the rebellious teens learned to love it. With this, Nirvana made their most famous album, Nevermind. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” made it big, and is still considered a grunge anthem. By this time, grunge and underground rock was huge. People began wearing the ripped jeans and tattered flannels with Doctor Martins and chokers. Cobain was still doing a significant amount of drugs. He was addicted to heroin and often performed and/or interviewed high. In fact, he showed up to his last show (Live at Reading 1992) in a hospital gown and wheelchair as a joke because of the comments he was getting on his drug addiction. This show went down in rock history as one of the most legendary shows. “We’d rehearsed once, the night before, and it wasn’t good,” (Goodman, Dave Grohl on Nirvana’s “Disastrous” Reading Gig) said Grohl in a later interview. The show was a sensory overload with lights, a random person dancing on the stage, and the stage presence only true performers can accomplish for almost two hours straight. Kurt Cobain is the revolutionary of grunge music because he made grunge music and underground rock more prominent in the music scene, defined a generation with his songwriting alone,
Kurt was an artistic child since the beginning, he would constantly draw and sing and play on a small drum set. At age eight Kurt became more hateful toward all people because he felt that he didn’t fit in anywhere, and that feeling only amplified when his parents divorced. “I remember feeling ashamed, for some reason, ashamed of my parents” Kurt explained in a 1993 Guitar World interview. Divorce wasn’t a common thing at the time, people just didn’t split so Kurt felt that he couldn’t even face some of his friends at school anymore. He so desperately wanted the typical family life so he resented his parents for quite a few years after that. He quickly became depressed and withdrew himself from anything family oriented. He caused trouble at home which resulted in being kicked out by his mother. This caused more issues with his home situation leading him to be shifted among aunts, uncles, and even friends because after a few weeks in each place everyone wanted him to leave.
Kurt had a very connecting relationship with his fans, through his music, a task that not many artists do today with their music. Even though Kurt was a “heroin user who suffered from depression, Cobain’s suicide note mourned his emotional distance from his fans, even as he connected with them in a way few stars had before” (Frizell 49). After his death he is still emotionally connecting with his fans through his work, and many people still talk about how great he was. Many people to this day debate on if he actually committed suicide, or if he was murdered by his wife. Lots of the articles over his death say that “Kurt Cobain committed suicide at the age of 27, he was found dead in his Seattle home” (Frizell 49).
I was born Kurt Donald cobain. My birthplace was in Aberdeen Washington in February 20. Growing up it was apparent that I was talented, I excelled in drawing, singing, and guitar. However life wasn't always so happy in my childhood, my parents often fought and would get divorced when I was only nine in 1976. I would leave my father's place after experimenting with drugs in 1982
The ten people involved included musician friends, record company executives, and one of Cobain's closest friends, Dylan Carlson. The intervention was unsuccessful, which resulted in Kurt gets angry and eventually locking himself in the upstairs bedroom. However, by the end of the day, he had agreed to undergo a detox program. He arrived at the Exodus Recovery Center in Los Angeles, California on March 30, 1994. The staff at the facility were unaware of his history of depression and prior attempts at suicide. When visited by friends, there was no indication to them that he was in any negative or suicidal state of mind. He spent the day talking to counselors about his drug abuse and personal problems, happily playing with his daughter Frances. These interactions were the last time Cobain saw his daughter. Kurt went outside to smoke a cigarette the following night, he climbed over a 6 foot fence and escaped the facility. He caught a cab back to Los Angeles and flew back to Seattle. On the flight, he sat next to Duff Mckagan of Guns N' Roses. Despite Kurt's own personal animosity towards Guns N' Roses, Kurt "seemed happy'' according to Duff Mckagan. Most of his close family and friends didn't know Kurt's whereabouts. On April 2 and 3, Kurt was spotted in numerous locations around Seattle. On April 3, Courtney contacted the private investigator Tom Grant, and hired him to find Kurt. He
Exodus Recovery Center for drug detox and rehab, Kurt Cobain climbed a six-foot fence to escape the center, then boarded a plane and flew to Seattle on March 31, 1994 (Cobain). Kurt seemingly went off the radar without his wife, Courtney Love, knowing of his whereabouts leading her to hire a private detective (Cobain). The search for the twenty-seven-year-old Nirvana leader turned up empty until April 8 when an electrician installing a security system in Cobain’s home found Kurt’s lifeless body (Cobain). The electrician and police found a shotgun lying on his chest along with a suicide note placed in a flowerpot nearby, the same note printed on a tween’s shirt for the sake of “edgy” fashion. On April 10, more than 7,000 mourners gathered in Seattle for a public vigil where Courtney Love and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic read aloud portions of his heartbreaking note. The frontman of the iconic band concluded his final goodbye to the public, his band, and his family by declaring “I don’t have the passion anymore, and so remember, it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”(Cobain). Kurt had struggled with depression and addiction for years, but in this final goodbye, he seemingly saw his suicide as a way to finally control his life, his
In spring of 1994, the deceased body of Kurt Cobain, one of the famed members of the band Nirvana, was discovered in his Seattle, Washington residence. Authorities had found that Cobain's lifeless body had been lying there for at least two days before being discovered. Cobain's death was ruled a suicide after a note and shotgun were found in close proximity to his body. Many fans of Nirvana were struck with disbelief after hearing the saddened news of the beloved band member. Shortly before Cobains murder, he had publicly stated that he had previously considered suicide, as well as falling into a coma following an overdose from drugs and alcohol. Cobain explained before his death, that his problematic youth played a role in his rash decision
It is mostly factual and does put emphasis on the small town boy who is drug addicted and depressed. The story begins right from when Kurt was born and there are obvious times that Cross has created parts for reading enjoyment, such as the final hours of Kurt’s life, as no one would know these intimate details, but Cross’ intentions were for the world to see all sides of Kurt Cobain, and this has been well depicted in this book. After reading this book, you feel as if you have known Kurt. The book does make one want to listen to the Nirvana’s music again, or for the first time, to see how Kurt’s depressed, drug twisted mind and his world were all combined into his music. His music, his art, as well as his actions, lead us to believe he was a depressed, drug addicted boy. Contrary to the outer shell he created, as well as pretending to harbour an aversion to fame, he really did care what others thought, “It seemed like a blur now that he was holding his very own record in his hands. Here was the final, tangible proof he was a real musician” (Cross, 2001) and sadly this was all too true and was proven by the way he ended his life with a suicide note that ended “It’s better to burn out then fade
