Initially, “Lamb to the Slaughter” provides an eye opening look into Gothic literature. It revolves around a hot mess relationship, with Mary Maloney and her husband Patrick. Before Mary was told the bad news, she could feel the tense mood in the air but ignored it. Mary babbled on to her husband but he was distracted on what he was about to tell her. Patrick asked her to take a seat, and then began to tell Mary the bad news. After she was told, not a word or movement was mad from her, she sat there with a stone cold face and unable to digest the news. “So there it is” he added “And I know it’s kind of a bad time to be telling you, but there simply wasn’t any other way. Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after. But there need’nt really be any fuss I
What happens when a pregnant woman kills her own husband? The short story titled “Lamb to the Slaughter” follows the story of the pregnant woman, Mary Maloney, and her husband Patrick. The story begins when Patrick decides to end his marriage. Out of anger and shock, Mary kills Patrick by hitting him on the back of the head with a leg of lamb. Instead of confessing to the murder, Mary Maloney lies about what she did and tricks the officers into eating the leg of lamb, effectively destroying any remaining evidence of the murder. The theme of “Lamb to the Slaughter” is deception. Both the original written work by Roald Dahl and the film adaptation use irony throughout the story to display this theme. Although both formats are presenting the same story and the same overarching theme, there are subtle differences between the film and the written version. The written piece by Dahl is presented in chronological order, while the film version uses Mary’s flashbacks to tell the story. In addition to this difference, Mary is depicted as a more selfless person in the film, and her motives for killing Patrick are less clear to a reader in the written version.
Patrick came home from work one day and told his wife, Mary, shocking news. Mary goes down to get dinner, a leg of lamb, and comes back into the room and kills Patrick with the lamb leg. The narrator explains, “At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head” (Dahl, 2). Mary Maloney killed her husband with a frozen leg of lamb with a blow at the back of his head. This means that the lamb is symbolising the weak and defenseless. Mary Maloney took the weak and defenseless and killed her husband with it, revealing that the weak and defenseless are capable of doing illegal things too. This matters because it reveals that people have to be wary of even the most frail and vulnerable because they can do drastic things just like the strong and powerful. Mary was able to take the frail and defenseless and use it to kill someone, which is illegal. Mary’s common sense was gone, as was the lamb’s.
In Roald Dahl’s short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” , Mary Maloney murders her husband, a detective, after he declares that he is leaving her. Mary then has to cover her tracks or else she and her unborn child will be killed. Throughout the story, Mary’s character changes from loving wife to cold killer and back again based on her situation.
Mrs. Maloney gets away with the murder in the end. This caused by a revolting ending in which he police detectives eat the leg of lamb that was used to kill Patrick. The writer creates an unbelievable ending by making the story, up to the murder, set in a very normal family house. It is not somewhere you would associate with a morbid killing. The writer builds up an impression that the marriage may not be as good as it could be, and both were under strain not to release the tension onto each other.
Mary has three distinct personalities throughout the story. In the beginning of the short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter” she seems like a devoted wife to her husband, Patrick. For instance, “The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight-hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the
CM1- Patrick Maloney was simply a lamb, clueless to the fact that he was to be slaughtered.
Dahl’s use of dramatic irony during the story helps displays the actions of Mary Maloney and other characters. Mary Maloney swings the leg of the lamb to the back of the head of her husband. Dahl says, “ she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head” (Dahl 320). As a result, this quote is effective because the lamb was used as a weapon, instead of food; which shows that Mary could use anything to harm someone without her trying or when it was her attempt to hurt that someone. The story writes, “Probably right under our very noses. What you think, Jack”. In the same way as the first quote, this sets back to Mary because she sabotages the police to eat the lamb. With the police eating the lamb she is getting rid of the evidence so she does not get caught. From the use of dramatic irony in the story, Dahl's builds Mary as a character; he also uses different irony to create her.
Lamb to the slaughter expresses many literary elements, creating a story about Mary Maloney’s experience with her husband. Dramatic irony is a very critical part of the story, especially while evaluating the situation. “Personally, I think it’s right here on the premises. Probably right under our very noses. What you think Jack? (Roald Dahl 9). She killed her husband with a frozen lamb leg after discussing troubling news that was never revealed. Mary called the police, who were also her husband’s coworkers. The police never figured out what the weapon was or who killed him. Mary asked them of a favor to eat the lamb leg cooking in the oven, and the weapon was right under their noses when they were eating. Additionally, the imagery
Author also surprises readers, when he introduces conflict between a couple that used to love each other deeply. Diverting the story from love to betrayal, author develops an irony. In the story, reader sees two examples of betrayal. Ms. Maloney, while talking with her tired husband, finds out her husband no longer want to keep their marriage. Without giving any kind of reason, Patrick betrays her wife with a decision of breaking marriage. Mary shocks, when her husband, boldly, says, “ This is going to be bit shock of you”(P. Maloney) Author creates a total opposite picture of Patrick by describing him as a husband who used to give her wife surprises; he is now giving her shock in the middle of her pregnancy. Mary, who was previously shown as “anxiety less”(Dahl), with “a slow smiling air”(Dahl) and “curiously tranquil”(Dahl), had began to get upset and now inculcate her eye with a “bewildered look.” After betrayed by her husband, she, without any argue, she goes to the basement to look for frozen food. She decides to have leg of a lamb as a last dinner with her husband, but she smashes the frozen leg in to Patrick’s head with killing him. Mary betrays her husband by killing him and takes revenge of her betrayal. Later, Author confirms her as a murdered with the statement of “I’ve killed him”(Mary) from her own lips. Dahl, in the story,
The story “Lamb to the slaughter” first introduced to us the wife, Mary Maloney. The story tells us based on her actions and the way she speaks that she loves her husband very much. The story also tells us that based on what her husband says and the way he acts he doesn't have strong feelings towards her. The text it states "This is going to be a bit
In my opinion, “lamb to the slaughter” is a good story to read because it is so meaningful. No one is perfect, Mary seemed to be a good wife, but she murdered her husband because he decided to leave her. Appearances are deceptive, she changed to another person. The way that she hide the murder weapon, the way that she act like a poor widow was so accurate. At the beginning of the story readers think of Mary as an innocent and ordinary wife. but even after Patrick tells Mary that he is leaving her she does not react violently right away. She calmly faces the situation and happily asks Patrick for dinner which he denies. At moment’s notice Bam! Mary hits Patrick in the head and ends up killing him on instant.
Mary outsmarts the detectives and is absolved of the crime. The absurdity is highlighted by the title of this work, "Lamb to the Slaughter." Ironically, one must question whether Patrick is also the metaphorical lamb which

The text could have just said she hit him with a lamb leg, but instead it elaborates and explains how it happened.
