Language Acquisition Principles
Stephen Krashen is one of the experts when it comes to language acquisition. He has theorized on the subject of second language acquisition for years and has been quite influential in the field of linguistics approaching the subject of second language acquisition by presenting his five hypotheses for his theory of acquiring a second language. His approach comes from his view that acquisition is obtained best through contextual conversation, which demonstrates his Acquisition-Learning hypothesis. This paper will discuss and examine Krashen’s theory which consists of his five hypotheses for second language acquisition and compare it to the method used by Aida Walqui.

Those two approaches are an “acquired system” and a “learned system”.
The acquired system is a process like that of a child learning their first language, where language comes from the interaction between the speaker and the listener naturally. It requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concentrated not in the form of their utterances, but in the communicative act (Krashen, 2007). Krashen believes motivation, self-confidence, and anxiety are factors that create either success or lack of success in the acquisition of a language. Walqui, on the other hand, believes second language development is a learning process and that different students have different learning styles motivated by intrinsic activities such as value, interest, and challenge (Walqui, 2000) She believes the learners have different learning styles. These styles are analytical, global, visual, or auditory. Those learners with the analytical style pick apart words and sentences, while those with global styles learn overall patterns in meaningful context. Walqui also contends that motivation and classroom interaction are essential to one’s learning. For Walqui, motivation is intrinsic and is for personal reasons, such as value, interest, or challenge. Now that times has change we will see how educators can make the requirements for ELL students better and more effective for teacher and students. Word allows people to express their thoughts and ideas through grammar, pronunciation, etc., and understand complex issues. For children in terms of education, language is a vital part of the development of education. People 's daily dialogue, learning, etc. are all required language skills. It requires the use of language between people convey their ideas. So in early childhood education, the development of language is very important. This article will relate to theories about early childhood language learning, content at different stages of children 's language development, the adult children of the relationship between language and language development, and so on.
Lastly, it is important to include Norm Chomsky every time we talk about language acquisition. Through his studies we can say that children can learn a new language because of their innate ability in their brain to be able to classify different words, specifically grammatical terms. He suggested that we have a device in our brain which he called a Language Acquisition Device that allows children to notice the differences between two languages. In my opinion if all of us have this device. All the child needs to stimulate it to be able to learn those important first words that a child is going to need as they further exposed into a language.
Therefore, from the behaviourist approach, language acquisition can be seen as a stimulus-response process. Children learn language by immitation and analogy. In the video titled The Four Stages of Acquiring Language, in which I observed. The first stage is “Babbling” one syllable sounds. I observed an infant at 4 months of age babbling. According to the CDC, at 4 months of age infants begin babbling, they can babble with expression and copy sounds he/she hears. Infants at this age can cry in different ways to express hunger, pain or being tired.
Gadsden County has a very committed ESOL program. Gadsden County has created an ELL program that is comparable to non-ELL students, with the focus on acquiring English and mastering academic success. A Home Langue Survey is sent home to all students to identify all possible needs for language assistance. Once a child has been identified for needing extra language assistance, an English Language Proficiency assessment is give to get a proper level of language acquisition. Gadsden County ensures that all teachers and administrators are properly trained to teach the ELL students and competent of understanding cultural differences. The Gadsden county ELL program takes every opportunity to ensure that language translations are available for parents and students and give necessary resources to ensure success.

Numerous theories try to explain the process of language acquisition. These theories fall into one of two camps. The environmentalist (or connectionist) theory of language acquisition asserts that language is acquired through environmental factors (Halvaei et al. 811). Theorists in this camp believe that a child learns language by gaining information from the outside world and then forming associations between words and objects. The nativist (or rationalist) approach, on the other hand, asserts that it is innate factors that determine language acquisition. Noam Chomsky, often described as “the father of modern linguistics”, falls into this camp as he believes that speech is the result of hidden rules of language that are hidden somewhere in the brain (Rahmani and Abdolmanafi 2111). Steven Pinker, a colleague of Chomsky, is a renowned psychologist, cognitive scientist and linguist who discusses his own theories on language acquisition in his book Words and Rules.
The first area of difference between first (L1) and second (L2) language learning is input – specifically the quality and quantity of input. It is the idea of the "connectionist model that implies... (that the) language learning process depends on the input frequency and regularity" (5).. It is here where one finds the greatest difference between L1 and L2 acquisition. The quantity of exposure to a target language a child gets is immense compared to the amount an adult receives. A child hears the language all day everyday, whereas an adult learner may only hear the target language in the classroom – which could be as little as three hours a week. Even if one looks at an adult in a total submersion situation the quantity is still less because the amount of one on one interaction that a child gets for example with a parent or other caregiver is still much greater then the adult is receiving.
