Latinos in Space In 1959, NASA selected the first seven people to become U.S. astronauts. Including those original seven men, only 338 people have had the honor of being selected. However, it wasn’t until 1986 that the first Latino was sent into the great unknown, and another seven years before the first Latina began logging hours in space. Born in San José, Costa Rica in 1950, Franklin Chang Díaz spent his childhood days in a cardboard box with his friends, going through the rituals of a rocket launch like they had heard about on the radio and television. After Díaz graduated high school in Costa Rica, he worked to earn enough money for a one-way ticket to Connecticut. Once in the United States, he enrolled in high school for another year
During the late 50s and early 60s the United States was falling behind in this race, but it wasn’t over. The next task was to be able to send groups of people into space together on one ship. This initiated the Voskhod and Gemini programs, Voskhod in the Soviet Union and Gemini in the United States. In the Soviets’ case there was not much changed from the Vostok craft except for the fact that they could fit 2 or 3 people on the craft. The Soviet Union only did two manned flights with the Voskhod program and left it; one flight in ’64 and one in ’65. The United States had completely changed from their original Mercury program though. It had a new design and “ the new design retained the conical, nickel-alloy walls and fiberglass ablative heat shield of Mercury, it also made use of new features – such as translations control thrusters to alter orbit, hydrogen/oxygen fuel cells to generate electricity, a radar system to allow rendezvous with other craft, and avionics that could withstand depressurization”(Universe Today). These missions whether one manned or not all helped paved the way to the “final lap” in the race to space. The United States and the Soviet Union each wanted to be the first to put a man on the moon; thus the start of the Soyuz and Apollo programs. For the UNITED States and NASA the Apollo missions started in 1961, but the first flight was in 1967 after they concluded with all the Gemini missions. The first ever Apollo flight ended in tragedy with an electrical fire starting and the capsule was destroyed killing the three people on board of the spacecraft. Many unmanned trials went about until finally the second manned trial by NASA in December 1968 with the Apollo 8 flight. Unlike Apollo 1, Apollo 8 was a huge
Benjamin Franklin was born January 17th, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. Although, during this period, Boston was known as the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a son to Josiah Franklin and Abiah Folger, he was just one of many 17 children. Benjamin Franklin was removed from school at an early age to begin work with his father,
Although there is disagreement on the precise date that the Space Race began, the moment that it became an important competition that was in the forefront of the minds of everyday Americans is on April 12, 1961 when Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the earth in Vostok 1. (citation). This event created a feeling amongst the American public that the Russians were further ahead in science and technology than the United States, as well as the fear that the Soviets could use their superior technology to be better able to attack the USA from a distance. Shortly after Gagarin’s flight, the United States launched astronaut Alan Sheppard into
Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, Tampico, Illinois, Ronald was the second son of Jack and Nelle Reagan. He was born in a small apartment above the Pitney General Store but later moved with his family to number of small town so his dad could try to establish his small business. By the 1920 his family settled in Dixon, Illinois, where he grew to adulthood. As a teenager Ronald Regan was very active in after school activities, clubs, and an amazing swimmer. As a life guard in Lowell Park in Dixon on the treacherous Rock River, he saved about 77 people from drowning. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1928 and enrolled the following fall at Eureka College. After he graduated from Eureka in 1932, with a major in economics, he landed a job as a radio sportscaster at WOC in Davenport, Iowa. Thanks to that experience he learned many things and was able to meet with many different people who helped him start his career
Robert Henry Lawrence Jr. was the first African-American astronaut to be selected for space travel. Robert graduated Englewood High School in the top 10 percent of his class. He later became an air force pilot and later was selected for space travel. Robert is considered the first black astronaut to be selected for space travel but does it count if he died before going into space? Furthermore, his name was written on the Space Mirror (which is a list of all the people who have died in space related accidents) for the astronauts those astronauts who have died. His name was first considered before going into space because they didn't know whether they were allowed to write his name on the Space Mirror because he did not physically go to
1960 during a racial time in the United States, three African-American women changed the way women work forever. Christine Darden had a lot of accomplishments with her career but two of her accomplishments were more important to her than others. Christine Darden, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughn were three women who joined the NASA association during the 1960’s.
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of his soap making father, Josiah Franklin. Ben loved learning and reading as a kid, but his father took him out of school at just ten years old so he can work in the family business, a candle and soap shop. At 12 he began apprenticing his old brother in a print press shop.
Prior to Dr. Ochoa there had never been a Hispanic woman to go to space. "She became the first Hispanic woman to go to space when she served on the nine-day STS-56 mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1993."(NASA, 2018). This implies that Dr. Ochoa being the very first Hispanic women to go into space left others inspired and show that anything can be possible. Through all the accomplishments made by her this was one of the biggest ones and may have been inspiring for women. Furthermore, "The nine-day STS-56 mission was Ochoa’s rookie flight and Foale’s second flight."(Kremer and Kremer, 2018),
It is often debated whether or not the Space Race was necessary. People have viewed it as a waste of time, money, and resources. America spent over $25 billion on the space program, equivalent to $100 billion today. Many believed that there were far more pressing matters on Earth, and that they should not explore space. Those people only saw the disadvantages that it had (Biddle, 2009). However, the Space Race was beneficial to humanity in various ways. Today Americans can use the knowledge obtained during the Space Race for countless purposes including commercial and military applications (Rabinowitch, 1963).The Space Race changed the face of science, international politics, and technology forever (Schefter 2005). The Space Race was not
The United States was going to send the first people to orbit of the Earth. But first, needed to find men having the courage to go to the unknown. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, also known as NASA, worked tediously on certain standards an astronaut would have to pass. NASA created many physical and mental tests to determine who would be eligible for space exploration. As told, “by late January 1959, a list of 324 eligible men had developed.” Of those three hundred twenty-four candidates, seven were selected to go to space. Gus Grissim, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, Gordo Cooper, Wally Schirra, Scott Carpenter, and James Lovell would soon become known as the Original Seven. Likewise, during the course of this event, the Soviet Union Space Program began working on a new rocket called Lunik 1. Yet, unlike the plans for Sputnik 1 and 2, Soviet Russia had much bigger and creative plans for Lunik 1 to attempt a milestone in history. Instead of having Lunik 1 orbit the Earth, the Soviet Space Program aimed for reaching the moon. Although this was the original plan, the launch did not go as hoped for. Lunik 1 had missed the moon by a few thousand miles. But, as inaccurately assumed, did not seem to be a complete loss for the Soviet Union. For example, “but it missed by 3,728 miles (Schefter, 78). The mission was not a failure, though, because Lunik was able to surpass the distances of all previous satellites and truly enter into space." Once again, the Soviet Union was able to take another step ahead into the Space Race. In addition to the victory of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Space Program was prepared to send the first man into space before the United States. On April 12, 1961, the Soviet Space Program launched Yuri Gagarin into the orbit of Earth. Yuri became known as a cosmonaut, more or less translated to the “sailor of the universe.” Because science was not yet advanced
Ben Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. He was self-taught and eventually got the occupations of a printer, statesman, and scientist. Growing up he was raised in a family of seventeen children. He was the fifth teen child and the last son in his family. When Ben was ten years old he was taken out of school to work with his father making candles.
The technological advances made possible by the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reach far beyond traveling to the moon. Today, NASA has contributed to many scientific discoveries that provide insight to the vast universe in which the Earth exists. During the period of time directly after World War II, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union culminated in a technological race that required the establishment of a government agency dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in aeronautics and space. The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (NASAct) passed because of widespread support due to the heightened technological competition between the United States and the Soviet Union and resulted
Space travel? Not on my list. Sure, rocket ships, space, and zero gravity may sound fun, but I would not go. Think about how much all of it would cost, with a rocket and insurance, and plus, making sure insurance can cover your safety would not be easy. Convinced yet? No? Then read along.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30,1882 in Hyde Park, New york. Franklin's family was part of New York’s aristocracy. He was born in a wealthy family. When he was small he had the chance to meet president Cleveland. President Cleveland told Franklin never to become president but he did become president.
