Laura Bogart’s “I Choose to be fat” is a blog post that seems to be against conforming to “everybody” in society’s ideal image. She tries to connect with the audience using emotional appeals. When reading this essay, I have a hard time figuring out who the audience she is writing to is. She could be writing to those who are in the same boat as her or she could be writing to those who think that she should lose weight. She could be writing to the doctors that she has had throughout her life that have said she needs to lose weight. Obesity is an issue that is heavily talked about today, like all the health issues that go along with is and what is does to the human body. In this blog post, she tries to provide justification of her “choice” to be fat by saying that she is happy and powerful, but in the blog post she is constantly contradicting herself throughout by giving negative examples about herself and others perceptions of her. She uses words like “petite” and “skinny” to describe those figures. The main point is how negatively she vies her doctors for calling her out on her weight she even goes so far to say that her doctors “bully” her about her weight, but maybe the doctor is just concerned about what all the extra weight is doing to her health because sometimes being overweight or even obese can cause serious health problems. She talks about how her doctors suggest things like Bariatric Surgery which is a surgical procedure performed to help people lose weight, the doctor tells her that “the weight just flies off” (Bogart). The doctors may sound harsh but she makes the out to be such horrible people who do not care about but in reality they are just trying to help her
