In society, there are often people who acquire strong leadership qualities and understand what it means to be a favorable leader. Other times, there are people who have strong qualities to lead, but they do not understand how to be a favorable leader and create a safe and comfortable environment for those following them. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters of Ralph and Jack arise as two different leaders who bear strong characteristics and they both seek power on the island. The boys become leaders in their own ways, creating individual environments that prioritize different matters, all while trying to work towards their rescue off the island.
Leadership takes notice, responsibility, self-development, and experience. Thoughts pop up when one thinks of a leader, perhaps a captain of a team, the president, maybe even the bigger brother. These people are mostly responsible and developed, they take notice into what is happening in any situation, but the experience is where a leader and a follower have things in common in most situations. Jack tries to tell the entire group that Ralph is a coward who doesn't deserve to be a leader. He asks everybody to kick him out as their leader and to accept himself as the new leader. As the boys are very scared, they do not raise their hand to agree with Jack. This makes Jack very angry and he decides that he can no longer stay with Ralph, and goes to the other end of the island. As many of the boys want meat, they slowly start leaving over time to join Jack's new group. Jack and his followers create a lot of conflict because of this new group. Jack, the self-appointed leader, is the cause of the murder of two kids in the book. Jack, the self-appointed leader, is at conflict with Ralph because he enjoys having power over others, and also because he does not like the rules that Ralph has made, and instead wants to go hunting. Jack is also at conflict with Piggy, because Jack relies on instinct to make his decisions. He does not like Piggy's logical way of thinking as he feels threatened by Piggy's knowledge and wisdom. To get rid of this threat, Jack gets Roger to kill Piggy and destroy the conch at the same time. "See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone---.".."I'm Chief." (Golding 1996, 223). Jack says this right after the murder of Piggy and the destruction of the conch. It shows that Jack really is a very savage person, who is not at al suited to be a leader.

Before Jack’s rise in power, Jack further rejects order to become a dictatorial chief by breaking the rules of the island. The boys decide that they need a way to signal passing ships and go to the mountain to make a signal fire and Jack decides that. Jack rebels order by going against current rules in place through manipulating the order of the conch and says that the conch “doesn’t count on top of the mountain” (Golding 42). Jack breaking the rule of the person holding the conch further adds to his motivation to be a dictatorial chief, because he is not following rules which leads to him to be a dictatorial chief. Jack would then misuse his power and not enstate rules as a chief. Leadership In the book “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding the leader of the group of boys is Ralph. Lord of the Flies is a story about a group of boys whose plane crashed en route to escape the attacks on Britain during the war. They established a sort of chain of command at the beginning to give themselves authority figures when adults were not available. This authority is given mainly to Ralph, who is elected Chief, as well as Jack, the leader of the hunters formally the choir, and Simon. The need for authority is shown in the results of its disappearance. The end of order, the lack of discipline, and the total chaos that ensues when what little leadership is left is divided.
The theme of leadership is uncovered by the symbol of the conch. As the connection grows between the protagonist and the conch, outer forces break the bond in attempt to take the position as leader. Ralph along with other boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding are trapped on an island due to the crash of their airplane. The discovery of the conch encourages Ralph to become chief, Ralph has the ability to use the conch to enforce his rules, but the unfortunate shattering of the conch breaks Ralphs hold on to leadership.
The theme of leadership can be seen in both the short story “The Birds” by Daphne deMaurier and Alfred Hitchcock’s version of “The Birds” in film form. The two tales, while held in vasty different settings with different characters, have a similar plot, the birds attack. Birds flock together for seemingly no reason and attack humans mercilessly, pecking out people’s eyes and consuming their flesh. The purpose to including leadership in both pieces of work is to prove that survival is heavily dependent on a good leader, without which panic and chaos will envelope the people and essentially lead to their annihilation.
