Legal Drinking Age In The United States

The drinking age is kind of an experiment around the world. In many places around Europe, people who are below the age of twenty-one are allowed to drink by law. Many teenagers around the US find this law biased, because teens aren't given enough credit for how responsible they can be. In Northern Europe, people see alcohol as a culture issue. In many countries it is traditional to have a glass of wine or two during each meal. The drinking age in other countries vary but the normal legal age is between 16-18 years of age. A recent "study that compared DUI laws in the United States to those in comparable nations, such as the European Union States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Brazil, found that the United States had the highest proportion of traffic fatalities that were alcohol-related among the 12 countries reporting data." It was reported that the United States had "relatively lax enforcement" in comparison to other countries ("National Minimum Drinking Age-Choose Responsibility").

The drinking age in America has been changed several times since the start of the United States. At the time there were no restrictions on alcohol. One of the next key changes was during the prohibition in the 1930s. This was a time where alcohol was outlawed for everyone in the United States. This did not work because many people drank undercover and the law was difficult to enforce. The most recent, to the legal drinking age, was during the Vietnam war period. At the time, the age limit was set at twenty-one but was reduced so soldiers could drink legally (Daniloff). After the war, the age limit was increased again, since the government thought it was the right idea. This was the last major change to the drinking age so far.

The minimum drinking age in the U.S. have questioned and in continuous debate to keep 21 years as minimum dinking age or lowering to 18 years. There are many opinions and arguments for those who approve a change and those who defend the policy. People that support this law affirm that are more the benefits on keep or even raising 21 years old as minimum age to drink since the car accident have been decreasing since the approve of this act. Drinking is something done universally. It can be done socially or obsessively. Even though the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA ) in the U.S. is 21 and it has been that way since 1984 young adults still continue to drink. They know it is illegal and they know that they could get arrested, the thing is they also know that in other countries the MLDA is lower, it could be anywhere from 19 to 16. This can be hard for young people to wrap their heads around. The fact that they can vote and go fight in wars yet it is illegal for them to get a beer with friends. All of these things aside it is still unhealthy and potentially unsafe.

Based on extensive research, I believe the minimum age to legally consume or purchase alcohol should be no less than twenty-five years of age.

The drinking age has been twenty-one for the past thirty years, but for the past few years, there have been debates on changing the drinking age back to eighteen. Most individuals under twenty-one have consumed an alcoholic beverage; many have done so because he or she thinks it is cool and/or his or her friends want him or her to. Regardless of why individuals drink before the legal drinking age, if those individuals are caught by authorities, the individual(s) will have to face the consequences. Considering everything that an individual becomes responsible for at the age of eighteen in the United States of America, including: joining the military, living on one’s own, getting married, owning a vehicle, working a full time job, raising a family, and many more, but at eighteen many still believe those individuals are too young to handle alcohol. Many people have argued that if an individual is old enough to join the military and risk his or her life, he or she should be able to consume alcohol. Opinions run high over this debate, but there are many studies being conducted as well.

According to me, age of twenty five is perfect age for drinking because at this age a human is able to decide what is good for him. People of this age reach to a maturity level that they can decide on their own which thing is benefical for them and which is not.
