In 1826, a group of Americans sought out to ban all alcoholic beverages; they were successful and had a law made under the 18th amendment. However under the 21st amendment it was repealed. So, the question comes up, should all recreational drugs be banned today? I feel that recreational drugs today (not for medical use) should not be banned.
I envision a world where drugs and even alcohol are legal. In my eyes the world does not appear different. I feel that even now when drugs (also again including alcohol) are banned, so many people do them illegally that it would not be that big of a difference if they are legalized. Consequently, if they are legalized drug and alcohol abuse might go up and due to that reason there should still be some
The well known debate over the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in The United States has been ongoing since 1935. Recently Colorado and Washington have legalized the use of marijuana for recreational use. By doing so, the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana has become more of an issue than it already was and now brings other states to question whether or not they should legalize marijuana (Breecher). Which brings about the question is the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Texas a good idea? I believe that legalizing marijuana would be a good idea. Just like the use of alcohol people should be able to choose if they want to use marijuana. Advocates of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana would agree, legalizing the recreational use of marijuana could yield substantial tax revenue, save the government money by decreasing the number of arrests and incarcerations, and quite possibly create a safer driving environment.
The topic of marijuana has been a big topic for the past few years. The United States considers marijuana as a drug, in some other countries they say it is a natural herb that is grown from the ground. The issue at hand is “should marijuana be legalized?” the congress of the US stay in a constant debate on this subject. Why is the subject of marijuana such in high demand, if the US already considers it a drug? There are many facts that need to be looked at before a final decision can ever be made. In contrast since the past two weeks the state of Colorado became the second state in the US to legalize marijuana. Obviously it is possible for marijuana to be accepted into society, obviously there are as much pros as
Legalizing Marijuana Abraham Lincoln once stated that, "Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man 's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded." In today 's society, this statement still applies in reference to the illegal use of marijuana. Marijuana prohibition causes far more harm than marijuana itself. Keeping marijuana illegal is expensive and causes crime. Out of four possible connections between drugs and crime, at least three would not exist if drug prohibition laws were repealed. First, crimes which occur billions of times a year are producing, selling, buying, and
After Prohibition in the 1900s when alcohol was banned and illegal to sell or make alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and liquor. People thought that alcohol was the leading cause of all social problems, unemployment, poverty, business failure, crimes, slums, violence, illnesses, and the destruction of families and moral corruption. While all of this was happening in the 1900s now today in the 21st century we have the same similarities between the new era of Prohibition the war on drugs and the Prohibition era in the 1900s. Today we are faced with the same problems with the war on drugs. Though some people have different ideas and thoughts and might not agree with what I will say about the new era of Prohibition I still think otherwise.
I do not think that drugs should be decriminalized because then individuals will sell, and take drugs even more. There needs to be control, and by decriminalizeing drugs the situation will only get worse. In some places such as San Francisco, marijuana has been decriminalized for medical use. A campaign director in Denver, CO tried to persuade voters to make marijuana legal by saying that it was safer than alcohol. In the Netherlands, marijuana is already legal and statistics show a significant increase in drug addiction, and crime also due to the legalization of drugs (Simon). It seems like from places that have legalized drugs , crime and addiction have become worse.
Drugs should be legalized and/or decriminalized in the future in Washington State and the Unit-ed States. However, along with legalization should come counseling for drug abuse and should give the pros and cons to using drugs. Since smoking was legalized and more information has come out about smoking there is 50% less smokers and it is less of a public issue. And as far as the concern with there being more people using drugs and driving a car, yes we will have drivers using just as we have drivers drinking and driving. Also with legalization will come more control for the purity of drugs and users will be less like to become dependent because of this. One other issue is that more money needs to be spend on rehabilitation. Incarceration is
The arguments that I have just laid out are not perfect and they have some apparent flaws that some philosophers would strongly disagree with, while there are other arguments that some of the great philosophers would agree with. I will critique the arguments that I have just laid out using the perspective of three different philosophers who all have their own ideas of how the state should function and the role of the citizen. The three philosophers that I will use in this critique will be Karl Marx, John Stewart Mill, and John Locke. The reason why I picked these three philosophers is because they all agree with some aspects of my writing, while disagreeing with others. One will disagree with the role of the state and the citizens, but
If drugs were legalized, people would have taken advantage and become addict’s who then suffers all forms of social health. Such as becoming dangerous to others, overdosing, or damaging their ability to work and function properly. Keeping them from living a
SUMMARY: In his article, "Understanding the Impact of Legalized Recreational Marijuana On State Tax Revenue," author Tony Nitti implies that the tax revenue from marijuana sales may not be as hefty as they were expected to be. Nitti develops this implication by calculating the amount of tax dollars necessary to pay for the changes that must be made to support legalized marijuana. The author's purpose is to cause the reader to question what they are being told in order to have a more informed vote.
Furthermore, it is no more worthwhile to create these laws than it is to create laws against extreme sports and overindulging at McDonalds. Obesity is an epidemic, insomuch that it kills millions each year, but it would be absurd for the government to regulate how much a person is allowed to eat. Moreover, the legalization of drugs would generate a legal ground to prosecute companies that do not meet health and safety standards, which would safeguard citizens from dangerous
A recreational drug is defined as "any controlled substance used to alter one's mind state or for non-medical purposes, without the permission or supervision of a physician" (Recreational Drug). Recreational drugs include both illegal and legal substances, some of which are extremely prevalent in the United States. The most popular recreational drug in the world is caffeine. Nearly, "80 - 90% of adult Americans consume caffeine every day" (Caffeine addiction). Other popular recreational drugs include nicotine (found in cigarettes), alcohol (found in beer, cocktails, wine, etc.), and cannabis (a.k.a. marijuana or weed) (Recreational Drug Use). These three drugs are found throughout the world and are used by a wide variety of cultures. Some
Government criminalizing drug possession or use has very little impact and did not work at all in the past years. People kept using drugs because the risk of doing it is part of the reason people start using them but there are many other reasons. If drugs would be legal,
Legalize, control, and discourage is a way to fix the problem. Evident by Colorado and Washington, “the legalization of marijuana can stop most of these possession arrests” (Levine). After the first opening of the first retail marijuana stores on January 1, 2014, Colorado had decreased crime rates, decreased traffic fatalities and increase in economic output (DPA). Since 2010, the marijuana possession arrest have went down 84% since its legalization. The tactic of legalizing, controlling, and discouraging has been proposed by the Economist, a weekly news magazine, in the late 80’s.
Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a plant which when consumed has psychoactive effects. It is believed to have been first used in the 3rd millennium BCE in what is now modern-day Romania (Rudgley). Throughout history, it has been known to be used during rituals and ceremonies, becoming an important aspect of numerous cultures. It has become illegal to possess, sell or use marijuana in various countries beginning in the 20th century, despite that it’s used quite commonly. According to a United Nations’ report, “cannabis was the world’s most widely produced, trafficked and consumed drug in the world in 2010” (Dockterman). Meanwhile, other, more-lethal substances such as alcohol and tobacco are legal and help benefit the economy. If two substances that can easily harm or kill people can be legal, then marijuana should receive the same treatment as they do.
"In any civilized society, it is every citizen 's responsibility to obey just laws. But at the same time, it is every citizen 's responsibility to disobey unjust laws." Martin Luther King Jr. Many people ask “why should marijuana be legalized”? when the real question that we should be asking is “why shouldn’t marijuana be legalized”?. Marijuana also known as hemp is a naturally grown plant that has been around for decades dating back to around 2697 B.C., when the Egyptians would use it to cure many common ailments, and the Chinese would use it for therapeutics. Using marijuana not only to cure common illnesses but for your pleasure as well should be up to you the free citizens of California and not to the government. The first major reason
