Leonardo da Vinci was born in Vinci, Italy, in the year 1452. Born into the Renaissance era, da Vinci was a possessor of a curious mind and keen intellect. He not only built his occupation as an artist, but also as a mathematician, inventor, writer, draftsman, and engineer. Although he received no formal education, da Vinci was able to understand the engineering behind many of his designs, some of which included the tank and crossbow (on a larger scale). As an artist, some of his ideal works included Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and Virgin of the Rocks.

Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, and military engineer which is the perfect example of a “Renaissance man.” With a curious mind, da Vinci studied the laws of science and nature, which greatly informed his work. The European Renaissance, beginning in the 1300s, is the era of hundreds of the most renowned artists, writers, and philosophers. But, probably the most well-known and accomplished renaissance man is Leonardo da Vinci. The famed Italian-born renaissance artist lived a life of art, science, and engineering and would eventually become one of the most esteemed people of all time.

Many of Leonardo's other inventions were improvements on the cannons, crossbows, and catapults of the earlier system, and others, which, adapted to the use of gunpowder. A useful invention made by Da Vinci was the portable cannon called a Clotonbrot. He made a cannon that was easy and convenient to transport and had a burning fuse to discharge it. His goal was to cause serious harm along with a lot of confusion from the smoke and noises from the cannon. This was a great invention.
