The philosophical meaning of the terms liberalism and conservatism in the American political discourse were defined as the following in the textbook, Liberalism: is simply the recognition of a sphere of individual rights that government should respect and leave untouched (Ethridge, 31). However, in today’s political discourse it essentially means that: 1) the government is required achieve equality for all citizens, and not to discriminate between citizens. 2) the government is required to protect human rights and civil liberties. 3) it is the government’s role to ensure that all citizens are not in need and that all of the social and political issues should primarily be solved by the government.

On the other hand, the textbook defines Conservatism as: support for the idea that traditional values strengthen society. Most conservatives believe that humans have natural tendencies toward greed, promiscuity, aggressiveness, and sloth, and that the best way to inhibit those tendencies is through strong traditional values …show more content…

A): Liberals think that every woman have the right to an abortion. And as a result, the government should provide assistance to those women who are in need of financial/medical assistance to have the abortion in a safe and legal way. Whereas, conservatives are not in support of abortion. They view abortion as murder, and that the government should not assist in this process through taxpayer dollars .

B): Liberals argue that LGBT rights and same-sex marriage should be legal to ensure the equality of everyone regardless of their sexual orientations, while conservatives oppose this point of view. They see marriage as the union of a man and a
