Would You Stay or Go?
“A conflict is a literary element that involves a struggle between two opposing forces usually a protagonist and an antagonist.” (literarydevices.net) Many people in our world have to make life changing decisions and they are not always the easiest thing to do. In the story If I Stay, by Gayle Forman, the main conflict is person vs. self as we see. Mia has gotten in a car accident and her family had died. She is in a coma and she must decide if she should wake up and become a foster child or die and be with her family. There are many important events that impact this conflict. Of the events in the story, the ones that most impacted how this conflict developed are the part where Mia’s grandpa gives her a long speech on how she needs to stay and when Adam talks to Mia.
One important event was when Mia’s grandpa spoke to her while she was in a coma. This event was important because it made Mia think of how much her family and friends would miss her. Her grandpa said that he would miss her a ton, but if she really wanted to go, then she could. Not only did Mia’s grandpa point out how much she would be missed, but he also pointed

This event was important because Adam is the most important person to Mia at this time and his speech made her think about how much they really love each other. Mia thought, “I shouldn't have to work this hard. I realize now that dying is easy. Living is hard." (pg 175) Mia thinks that it would just be easier to die but Adam’s speech makes her think differently. In addition to Adam’s speech making Mia think differently, it also made her decision easier. After hearing what her grandpa and Adam have to say, Mia realizes what the right thing to do is. For all of these reasons, one can see that Adam’s speech made Mia’s decision much easier by showing her how much he loved
Unbroken is mainly set during World War II, in the Pacific and several other places. The story mostly focuses on Louie's life growing up, in the barracks, and in the several POW camps he had to endure during his time as a captive. The setting has a huge effect on the story because the war is what really drives the main plot through Louie's enlistment through the mental aftermath of the war that he has to work through. It's also interesting to look back at how the men at the time perceived the war effort, and how it impacts their morale. For example, after a successful air raid the men in Louie's unit believe “With the dawn of 1943 and the success at Wake, the men felt cocky. It had all been so easy. One admiral predicted that Japan might be
In the novel Fever, 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson there is a lot of conflicts. I believe conflict is a situation or problem that one character or more are facing. These conflicts are the struggles of the fever, having to deal with the Ogilvies, and Mattie facing herself. Mattie’s perseverance while facing the challenges of getting through the fever, facing the Ogilvies, and facing herself and her doubts helped lead her from childhood to adulthood.
A common theme in many great works of literature is that of forgiveness. Through studying some of these classics, we can learn the lesson that forgiving others, lets you to let go of hate and anger, and to draw nearer to God; this helps people to be happier and to obtain peace, even in terrible circumstances. First, in Left to Tell, Immaculée was able to find comfort and peace, when she found it in her heart to forgive. Second, in Blood Brothers, Elias found comfort and strength in the understanding that Christ loves and forgives all. Third, in Les Miserables, we see the results of being selfless and choosing to forgive. In this essay, we will examine this fundamental theme in the books Left to Tell by Immaculée Ilibagiza, Blood Brothers by Elias Chacour, and Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.
Climax- As Mia is taking Adam to all sorts of places around the city she finally tells Adam the reason she had to leave was because she hated him and that she knew what he was
Soon after being deserted on the road, grandfather comes down with a summer grippe and becomes helpless. Mattie then needs to take care of them both by finding food and water. This shows responsibility because she not only had to take care of herself, but of her grandfather too with no help from anyone, and no one to tell her what to do.
One of the first conflicts in the film causes a bigger conflict in later years and later in the plot between the same characters. A conflict is defined as "Conflict is a fact of human life. It occurs naturally in all kinds of settings. Nations still struggle, families fracture in destructive conflicts, marriages face challenges and often fail, and the workplace is plagued with stress." in the textbook "Interpersonal Conflict" by Wilmot. Meriam-Webster defines conflict in three ways. Firstly a war, fight or battle. Secondly "competitive or opposing action of incompatibles :antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons)" or "mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands". Lastly "the opposition of persons or forces that gives rise to the
Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship. This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel Lesson before Dying, Doll’s House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent.
In the book Everything I Never Told You, there are many different elements and techniques used within the book. The technique that I want to go into more depth on is the use of symbolism. I specifically want to focus on the symbolism in regards to Lydia, Hannah, and Nath’s love of astronauts and space.
In past years, as well as, in the twenty-first century, African Americans are being oppressed and judged based on the color of their skin. In, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, this is the primary conflict that plagues Jefferson’s as well as Grant’s everyday life. By pleading guilty to a murder that he did not commit, Jefferson has to choose to die just as he is, a hog in the white’s eyes, or die a man. On the other hand, Grant, who is his teacher, is faced with being looked down upon by his community all because of his race and status. He is graced with the challenge of turning Jefferson into a man before his execution date. It is only a matter of time before they both realize that they cannot change the past and they have
Many people believe that material things will bring you peace and happiness. That is not always that case though.Everyone at some point in their life had gone through something that they thought would have a major positive impact on their life, but ultimately, it affected them very negatively. These can include anything from money, to power, even to women. Bernard Malamud explains these example in his book, The Natural, with his character, Roy Hobbs. Roy is the Knights star baseball player, when all goes wrong. He starts to chase different women, believing that those people will lead him to happiness in the end. Roy Hobbs is the main character in the book, The Natural, who finds himself in tough situations, and finally discovers that what he wanted from the start, won’t actually make him happy in the end.
They got into a car accident on the way over which leads to her coma and the death of her mom, dad, and brother. This is a significant change because she has to make many decisions for herself: should she die or should she continue to live her life. There were many results of this change such as her relatives and close friends visiting her constantly, staying with her family that is still alive, and having different surgeries. Many of Mia’s family and friends visit her while she’s in the hospital bed. “I have quite the crowd now. Gran and Gramps. Uncle Greg. Aunt Diane. Aunt Kate. My cousins Heather and John and David. Dad is one of five kids, so there are still lots more relatives out there” (62). Everyone is in the hospital for Mia because they care about her and she knows that they’re fighting for her which makes her want to fight to stay too. Mia’s little brother, Teddy, was at a different hospital than her which is why everyone was there at once. She knows she has to stay with her family and friends that she still has with her instead of leaving them and choosing to die. “‘Stay.’ With that one word, Adam’s voice catches, but he swallows the emotion and pushes forward” (230). Other family members want her to stay with them because they all love her very much and Mia has to have many different surgeries because she has a lot of injuries. They want to give her confidence during the surgeries. Another major effect of the accident was the abundance of surgeries.“There are a lot of things wrong with me. Apparently, I have a collapsed lung. A ruptured spleen. Internal bleeding of unknown origin. And most serious, the contusions on my brain. I’ve also got broken ribs. Abrasions on my legs, which will require skin grafts; and on my face, which will require cosmetic surgery - but, as the doctor's note, that is only if I’m lucky” (40). Since
When they pulled up to Mia's house Erik walked her the door and kissed her goodbye. Mia walked into a dark as the house not being able to see anything. As she turned around she saw her mother turn on the lamp. "Mom you frightened me, Mia said." "Where have you been young lady, Sheila asked?" "I was out with dad and the others, she responded. Right then and there Mia saw something different in her mom that she never saw before. She knew that her mom was a different person than who she was
The second half of the novel Gone by Michael Grant portrays a more violent plot. The town’s newly created police attacks Bette and forces them to retreat to Coates Academy to plot another attack on the children of Perdido Beach. With the help of Caine’s powers, they use coyotes to attack and capture Sam and friends. They escape and return to Perdido Beach to plan a war against Coates. Sam and Caine battle within the town square and they both have their fifteenth birthday at the same time. Their mother appears before them and gives them a choice of whether they want to leave the FAYZ and they both choose to stay.
Conflict is opposing actions, ideas, and decisions that hold a plot together. Clugston (2014) states “Conflict is the struggle that shapes the plot in a story” (4.1 Plot, para. 4). Conflicts are also encountered in most of the literature we read for pleasure. It can create personal connections and instill deeper meanings to our experiences as we read, especially if we can relate what is read to our personal life.
As the youngest among the Fitzgerald children, she is well known as funny and cute. Despite her young age, Anna is quite smart and an observant little girl. Anna’s actions drive most of the plot in this novel. This is because she is having some inner conflicts and struggling with herself whether she has to be her sick sister’s savior or to follow her natural desire to live like other thirteen years old girl without having to faced such burden. While the rest of the family has often been left to sit idly by in Kate’s fight against cancer, Anna, because her genes match Kate’s, has been an active participant. Anna’s role in Kate’s survival has been a blessing and a curse for her, as it has made her Kate’s savior but has also made Anna unable to be herself and having her control towards her own body. Anna stands out as the book’s most conflicted character and what makes her so complicated is her connection with Kate and her struggle to exist independently of that connection, both define her. She tells Campbell, for example, about all the things she might want to be and what she wants to do in her future. Although the main purpose of her living consists in keeping her sister alive, At the same time, Anna desperately wants to live her life and exist independently from Kate. These mixed feelings make up the tragic core of Anna’s character. She feels a tremendous sense of guilt for wanting to live separate
