Literary Analysis : Of Mice And Men

The character in Of Mice and Men that is most similar to Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby is Curley. Curley and Tom Buchanan have many similarities throughout both books. These shared characteristics stem from one thing both men have an abundance of: privilege. Curley and Tom are easily two characters with the least amount of struggle in The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men.

John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was an American author wrote many novels including one of his most famous, Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men teaches many lessons about the nature of human existence. Each relationship grows throughout this short story and end with a dramatic experience. All of the characters, including Lennie, George, Crooks, and Curley’s wife, admit, at one time or another, to having a profound sense of isolation, seclusion and loneliness.

Crooks is the stable boy, he is neat, likes books and is pretty quiet. He is also black, because of this he is discriminated be the other men at the farm. This prejudice leads Crooks to be extreme isolated, left to tend the horses alone. When Lennie tries to make friends with Crooks he reacts defensively, as the text states, “Crooks scowled, but Lennie's disarming smile defeated him. "Come on in and set a while," Crooks said. "'Long as you won't get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down." His tone was a little more friendly.” This quote shows that since Crooks hasn’t had any friends for so long that he almost can't deal with someone trying to be nice and interact with him.

Everyone has dreams, big and small. When one dreams, there is a scent of whimsical hope in the air mixed with the powerful drive for success to obtain their luminous goals. But, many times these luscious dreams end up in grief and pain instead of a promised joy due to the hurdles in life, such as the certain circumstances that society professes or the flaws in a person that restrains them from their aspirations. The writer, John Steinbeck, incorporates this ideology in his novella, Of Mice and Men by creating three pivotal characters. Lennie, Crooks, and George all have schemes that go wrong, and yet hope to illustrate their desires of fulfilling their American Dream and to be prosperous for their own independent purposes.

     Of Mice and Men was written during a period of racism. In the 1960's it was important for everyone to get along with eachother because not everyone was equal. George and Lennie showed a great part in friendship throught the whole book. At the ranch in Selinas mostly everyone showed friendship in some way. Crooks mentions “A guy need somebody-- to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody”(72), which shows that he wished to someone’s company since he feels he needs any sort of company. Also, Crooks deformed and crooked back forces him to have limited amounts of contact with the other men since all he can do is tend the horses in the barn or play horseshoes. Which results as an increase in his feeling of loneliness. In addition, even though he degrades Lennie as they begin to converse in the barn, Crooks’ loneliness forces him to talk with Lennie since he has no one to talk to. As Crooks says in the novel “A guy sets alone out here all night, maybe readin’ books or thinkin’ or stuff like that. Sometimes he gets thinkin’, an’ he got nothing to tell him what’s so an’ what ain’t so… he can’t turn to the guy and ast him”(73). Throughout the novel, as Crooks develops a character, his loneliness is demonstrated each time he is mentioned.

Race and gender were very important characteristics that determined whether a person had the opportunity to make money. The 1930’s were also a time where people started questioning life and the American culture. Many people like John Steinbeck thought that life was very unfair and questioned whether if life was even worth living. In Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck demonstrates that mans dream is destined to be destroyed by a cruel reality.

Of Mice and Men is set in the era of The Great Depression, and the ranch, where the events of the novel occur, is in California, a place many Okies turn to after their farms fail in The Dust Bowl. The farms in California are faring well. There are many farms, but not enough to support all of the jobs that the many unemployed workers need. Thus, men travel from ranch to ranch in search of jobs, and commonly they do so alone. Their travels are lonely, so some people turn to others for companionship. In Of Mice and Men, people are driven to attempt to find friendship in order to escape loneliness.

George Milton; a small man with sharp features, a strict and worn out look on his face, a mind making him as clever as a fox and which gives min the upper hand in any situation, where he can easily find a way out or a solution. Lennie Small, a man who does not quite living up to his name suited for a small man: He is tall, with broad shoulders, strong arms, with shapeless features; creating an innocent look on his face. Underneath it all lives a man with the mind of a child, who does not realize his own strength and sometimes acts irrationally: A complete opposite to his partner in crime, George.
