There were many literary devices used in this novel. For one, the use of different symbols- like the narrator’s grandfather for example- gave the novel more meaning and helped me as the readers better understand where his thought process was coming from. The novel also displayed different uses of allusions and showed me the correct to use them in my writing and how to identify them other novels. Another literary device would be irony. The Golden Day’s name was totally different from what it actually was. When the narrator went inside the Golden Day, I didn’t expect the atmosphere of the place to be as hectic as it was simply because of the name. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien expresses the importance of a story-truth, as opposed to a happening-truth by use of literary elements in his writing. The novel is about war and the guilt it leaves on everyone involved in the war. Story-truth is not exactly what happened, but uses part of the truth and part made up in order to express the truth of what emotion was felt, which an important thematic element in the novel is. The three literary devices he uses to express this are diction, imagery, juxtaposition, and hyperbole.
