Logical Fallacies Analysis

Danforth uses the fallacy Argumentum ad Baculum to persuade Mary to tell the truth. At this point in the trial, Mary proclaimed that the entire argument of witchcraft is a hoax and the girls pretended to see spirits. To encourage Mary to speak, Danforth says “I say you will hang you if you do not open with me!” (117, Act 3) threatening death if Mary doesn’t tell the truth. For my journal entry I choose to read Online Higher Education’s Individualist Fallacy by Johann N. Neem. Johann Neem is a professor of history at Western Washington University and argues that there is a value in “Institutional culture” for the student that attends traditional classes on a college campus. According to Neem, institutional culture is important because learning is a social experience and depends on relationships since under the guidance of a professor a student will prosper, and be inspired by the energy in the classroom setting. Neem also states that professors are able to adapt easily to the needs of the students that are present in the classroom versus those who attend online. The three logical fallacies I chose to discuss are ad hominem, bandwagon, and stacking the deck. I chose these three based off examples I could think of that have been placed boldly in my face.

For my Rhetorical Think Piece assignment, I chose to write to an audience that shares the same values that I do regarding women’s rights. My audiences demographic is somewhat of a younger generation, as they are advocates for equality and freedom. Most of my readers live in the United States, where women’s rights are currently undergoing a large political movement. While the expansion of women’s rights is still changing in the US, I believe that Saudi Arabia is not as progressive as our country, therefore allowing the mistreatment of women and children to be legalized. This was also the main factor I considered when choosing my topic, as I knew that this issue would capture my reader’s attention.

The Quinnipiac University poll was done during early September to test the waters before the first presidential debate between Clinton and Trump. The sample size was roughly 960, supposedly voters from across the nation with a margin of error of +- 3.2 which isn’t horrible. The numbers look fine and because it was a nationwide poll, the possibility of getting a fair and accurate cross section of views is fairly high, that being said there are a few issues with this poll that cause me to be concerned with the accuracy of this poll for many reasons.

1. One of the main arguments of the debate was situated against inventive and the ways it presented itself in Hillary Clinton’s campaign. For example the proposition said that Clinton’s background was a good indicator of her future decisions and that inventive is based off of situated. The opposition rebuttal included the argument that situated is only a platform and the way she speaks now and the narrative that is created is more important is current predicament of the race. The also debated on party allegiance and the factors that play into that. Imagine discovering the cure for cancer, and then tossing the revolutionary discovery into a blaze of fire. This obliteration has happened to rhetoric, a tool of language that donates life to argument and creates a thriving system of communication for the world. Rhetoric used to be an important aspect of education that could assist students with the teachings of argument and human interaction. Today, rhetoric has become a topic of minimal discussion among ideas that have long since been outdated, and considered archaic to the educational system. In reality, rhetoric exemplifies the human genius and must be taught in schools to further the evolution of human expression.

The 2016 presidential campaign, was wrought with several controversial issues, none more so than the refugee crisis. Throughout the campaign, Donald Trump’s Anti-Muslim rhetoric, appeared to go against the American ideals of protecting religious freedoms. This trend continued into his presidency, he enacted Executive Order 13769 “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States”, banning immigrants and refugees from seven predominately Muslim countries. While, the President claims these measures were taken to prevent any future terrorist attacks on the United States, many question if the Order has more to do with instilling a ban on Islam. In the United States, the medical and pharmaceutical industries have the greatest technology and professional medical services in the world. As a result, the cost of medical care is higher than the other countries. With that said, due to ever increasing costs, healthcare reform has been an issue for the past two decades. In order to lower the cost of healthcare, President Obama introduced revolutionary changes. ObamaCare is the unofficial name for The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a health reform law signed on March 23, 2010 by President Barack Obama (DeMichele). In this week’s reading of the “Rhetorical Approaches to College Writing”, the foundations for rhetoric were introduced. The book describes rhetoric as a word with many definitions that all have a commonality. From the reading rhetoric seems to have a way of calling people to action in some distort manner similar to enticement. From the reading three definitions of rhetoric were given by different sources. The first source being from a ancient Greek philosopher who defined rhetoric as, “the faculty of discovering in any particular case all of the available means of persuasion”(RACW pg.3). Seasonal influenza especially affects children in childcare and schools and school-age children facilitate the spread of influenza within schools, households, and communities. Influenza spreads mainly from droplets made when people sneeze, cough, or talk. Since droplets can travel 30 feet, all children in a classroom are potentially exposed. Rhetoric is the the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing. This is especially the useful fore speeches in debates and politics and other compositional techniques. Even medias such as logo, images, commercials and advertisements use a tool people use in order to convince people to watch and/or buy something One example of rhetoric in action is in a YouTube video that called, “Brian Williams Raps ‘Gin and Juice.’” This video contains uses the three aspects of rhetoric's, ethos, logos, and patho, in order to convince to younger viewers to watch his show.

As for myself, I had to weigh the concept of media influence effecting my purchasing habits, as I spend the majority of my free time outdoors or engaged with a book. What I concluded, was repetitively humorous ads such as “Old Spice”, “Irish Spring” and “Dollar Shave Club” commercials, not only share unique similarities in content, they also primarily address the market for low cost, daily use items. Considering these realities and my own recollection of advertisements which motivated me to purchase a product, I would have to postulate the Dollar Shave Club commercials won the contest hands down. In fact, I have never procured any Old Spice or Irish Spring product or felt any desire too, I simply enjoyed the satire imbedded in the advertising, however, when it came to the Dollar Shave Club, I have been a member for the past 3

Though the definition of a “good paper” is subjective, there are many universal qualities that produce a strong, academic writing. Rhetoric is comprised of an issue, claim, persuasion, audience, evidence, reasoning, assumptions, and appeals. To develop an effective style of argument, Schlib and Clifford suggest marking transitions. This helps the audience understand and anticipate a turn in an argument. They also recommend creating coherence by repeating words and by using similar words. The repetition of keywords establishes the main concerns of an argument. Furthermore, the authors claim readers should balance parts of a sentence because readers enjoy the symmetry and rhythm-like quality in the work as a whole.
