Steinbeck’s characters are often the underdogs, and he shows compassion toward them throughout the body of his writings. The personalities of the characters Of Mice and Men foreshadow the theme of loneliness as for even some characters don’t even have names symbolizing actions foreshadowing the story. Curley’s wife protrades as being lonely since she is the only girl on the ranch and Curley forbids her to talk to the guys, she doesn’t listen to him anyway and while he is wandering around she starts flirting with the ranch hands. On page 28 Candy describes her of having an eye out on the men and they all know she does this except Curley.
