Is having a friend,or even some sort of person that is always there for you to do things you need or can’t do, really necessary? Friendship is the key to stay away from loneliness. Even though loneliness can hurt someone, it is one of the worst emotions you can feel, because deep down it can have a major effect on a person’s life. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck loneliness is shown throughout characters that are open minded to show how they feel about loneliness. Some characters are more about being scared of loneliness and not wanting people to leave them because not a lot of people feel that being by yourself is very fun. In Of Mice and Men the character named Lennie is not lonely throughout the novel but he is very frightened that if George leaves him then he will become extremely lonely. George is like Lennie's parent/guardian, if it wasn’t for him then Lennie wouldn’t know really what to do, he’d be lost and probably shivered up in a corner because he’s scared. Lennie has the mind of a child he doesn’t care much about anything. He’s frequently getting into trouble and being compared to animals because of the way he acts or does something. Lennie then kills Curley’s wife because she asked him to feel her soft hair but, he gets a little to rough, when Curley's wife starts to struggle, he gets confused and holds even tighter. When she starts to yell, Lennie thinks George will hear and will be mad that he is communicating with the woman, so he covers her
One thing that can change a man is meeting another, as this gives him the opportunity of having a friend and not being alone. A person who is lonely will always search for a friendship. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the characters Crooks, Lennie, and Curley’s wife all exemplify loneliness and isolation. They all search for a bond in their own way.
Mother Theresa once said, "Loneliness is a man's worst poverty." Without friends and companions, people begin to suffer from loneliness and solitude (Dusenbury 38). Loneliness is an inevitable fact of life and cannot be avoided, as shown prevalent through each of the characters in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Each and every character in this novel exhibits loneliness. Lennie was isolated for being mentally handicapped, Candy was isolated for being old and disabled, Crooks was for being black, Curley's wife for being a woman, and George for having to care for Lennie and being unable to socialize with others because of Lennie's consistency of getting into trouble from town
In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, it is about two friends. One friend was large but had a mental disability, Lennie, and the other friend is intelligent and average, George. The two friends can't stay and work at a place for too long because Lennie always gets into trouble and they have to find another job. When George and Lennie finally found a ranch to work at, Lennie kills Curley's wife, the boss's son's wife, accidentally so George kills Lennie. Although George is better off without Lennie, now he is going to be as lonely as the other characters. Loneliness can affect a character's actions and choices, by causing them to be mean, isolated, and seeking for someone's attention.
Loneliness is a revolving topic throughout the book. Many characters are impacted by it and this changes the outcome of the book. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, he develops the concept of loneliness through Candy's disability, Crooks unable to fit in, and Curley's wife in order to demonstrate that loneliness impacts people by causing anger and depression.
In Of Mice and Men, there are an abundance of themes throughout the novel. One of those themes is friendship which is shown clearly though George. In the novel, when Lennie says, “Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.” (Steinbeck 14) shows how close of friends George and Lennie are. They rely off of each other because George physically helps Lennie, and Lennie helps George mentally to not be as grim. However, another on of the themes is loneliness. Although George has Lennie, he can get lonely because he does not have anyone else to talk to. George is not the only who is lonely because Curley’s wife also shows that she is lonely when she says, “Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?” (Steinbeck 77) When Steinbeck was writing his novel, he wants readers to understand even though our best friends are loyal, they need other people to talk to and will at sometime lose
Loneliness, it's a strange thing to think about since it isn't a problem these days, but during the Great Depression and times around this loneliness was not rare at all. This is why loneliness was a significant theme in the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. The most lonely characters in the story by far were Crooks (The dark man that works on the ranch), and Candy (the old one handed man that operates on the ranch). These two characters were not described directly as lonely, but it grew more noticeable the further into the story.
Throughout the novel, Of Mice and Men (by John Steinbeck), loneliness is the major underlying theme of the novel. You could almost say that the book has hormonal' up's and down's. Most of the characters are very lonely because they have no family. However, George and Lennie are the contradiction to this. George and Lennie's bond towards each other are so- strong that you can almost see it as you are reading the book. Candy the old crippled man wants to be part of George and Lennie's dream to own a farm and "live off the fatta the land". Curley and his dog are like the metaphor in the book for George and Lennie. Candy has to take care of his dog and George of Lennie. The other two
Although Crook, Curley's Wife, and George are lonely, ultimately you need to have someone in life.
Loneliness is an emotional response to a lack of companionship. Loneliness is also a lack of companionship. In the book of mice and men, all the characters portray loneliness in one way or another. This longing of others is a very powerful feeling and can compared to, in some aspects, the survival instinct. The central message of the title Of Mice and Men is loneliness.
“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck 13). Loneliness affects people in different ways. Some people go out of their way to get attention from others, and others isolate themselves. In the story Of Mice and Men, some of the people living on the ranch are struggling with loneliness themselves. Loneliness affects characters in Of Mice and Men through Crooks isolating himself from others, Curley’s wife flirting with other men for attention, and Lennie worrying about George leaving him to take care of himself alone.
All of us have gone through loneliness at some point in our lives. Some more than others, but definitely at one time. Google defines loneliness as, “sadness because one has no friends or company.” In the book Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, this is a recurring issue that many characters face at different times throughout the story. Most of the time, the author has the character express their loneliness directly through dialogue directed towards another character, but sometimes the reader needs to analyze hints from the author or re-read sections to uncover a character's hidden loneliness.
Although Of Mice and Men appears to be a novel that centers on the ideas of friendship and camaraderie, it can also be skewed the other way. These men who work on ranches live short, lonely lives. To them, friendship is much more of a luxury, per se, than a necessity. They work for a month, get paid, and move on. Their lifestyle isn't designed to make long-term friendships. They know nothing else. Almost every character has something to say about being lonely, making it a key point in this novel.
Many of the characters in the novel are isolated and openly discuss their feelings of loneliness and i think that most of them feel that way because the guys travel by themselves and that's one of the reasons they may feel lonely. They also might feel lonely because they don't even have a home or a place they could call their own. The reason why I think a majority of them are lonely though is because they don't have families and just having a family and spending time with them makes you feel better and since they don't have a family is probably why most of the men spend their time at susy's place. Another one of the reasons why i think that most of the men and even the people that work at the ranch are lonely is because they have almost absolutely nothing.
Steinbeck shows the main struggles of being lonely in this book. Lennie’s impairment makes him an outcast, he shows mental illness, and does not have a good understanding of context around him. People give Lennie a wierd look for ways that he acts. Lennie has no one that is like him he’s always around figures such as an responsible adult, or much like a parent figure. “A guy sets alone out here” (Steinbeck 51). Lennie talks about how he sits by himself everyday and doesn't talk to many people. In the text lennie used the word sets instead of sits this shows poor vocabulary skills in common knowledge of speech. We will see it happen again in later quotes. You can definitely see that he doesn't think like the rest of us which makes him look like an odd ball. They way how lennie acts is the reason why people don't talk or impact his life in any way. When i use the word Impact i mean no one is taking time out of there day to help out or just give some complement to boost his confidence so lennie can feel better and be happy. This is what makes lennie feel lonely, beside gorge telling him what to do he doesn't really talk much. “I thought use was mad at me George” (Steinbeck 87) In this scene Lennie screwed up and thought George was angry at him for what he did. Being lonely made Lennie think that he was lonely because people always got mad at him and couldn't stand to be around him. His mental conditions makes Lennie have weird obsessions with things that he finds pleasing. One of them is that he likes to pet rabbits or other small furry animals very hard and for too long, consequently ending in a dead animal. Most normal people aren't comfortable with his freaky obsessions, which is another
Many of the characters do suffer from loneliness in the novel Of Mice and Men. George lets everybody know early on in the novel that he is lonely. When George reminds Lennie that "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck Section 1). Men like George who travel from farm to farm usually never have anyone to look to for companionship and protection. As the story goes on, Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife all state their deep loneliness. Crooks says, “A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick" (80). In a world with no friends to confide in, random people will have to do. Each of the characters search for a friend, someone to confide in and be able to talk to on an everyday basis, as Crooks says. In the end, however, companionship of Curley’s kind seems impossible to find. For George, when Lennie dies, George’s dreams and hopes of finding a companion disappears.
