As social beings, most of us feel the need to interact and enjoy the company of others. A popular definition of loneliness is that it's that feeling we get when this interaction is missing. However, loneliness is not the same as being alone or isolated. One can choose to be alone and enjoy a very blissful life. Or one can be very active in community groups, friends, and even family and still feel lonely. Loneliness is not an outward appearance, its an internal battle that causes weakness, and spiritual isolation within a person.

Marriage is not an escape from loneliness, at least according to a study that showed nearly 20% of people, in general, suffer from loneliness every day. A more recent study of older adults stated that of the 62.5% who said they were lonely, were married and living with their partner (Winch). In The Great Gatsby, the character, Nick, claims to know all of the ins and outs of some marriages, along with the secret affairs hidden beneath. There are one marriage in particular that he is very in tune with. He possesses knowledge regarding the truth of which men the ladies actually love and who wishes to be married to another. In Of Mice and Men, two men leave one town in order to find work in another. The pair found more than they were looking for when one of the wives of the ranch workers causes major trouble that results in a character’s death. Both of these women in the novels settled for marriage, but the marriages left them lonely. As a result, they began looking for attention outside of their marriages. Each of these women, in their own way, teaches us an important life lesson. When it comes to matters of love, if you settle for someone you do not truly love, you will ultimately be led down the path to loneliness.
