Loneliness & Isolation in 'of Mice and Men'

An idea I found interesting in the novel ‘Of Mice And Men,’ by John Steinbeck was loneliness and isolation. I found this idea interesting because it helped me understand how important it is to be surrounded by people. George and Lennie’s friendship contrasts this idea as they are friends and they have each other, whereas most of the other ranch workers travel alone. The idea of loneliness was strongly conveyed through the characters Crooks and Curley’s wife, they are both key examples of lonely and segregated characters. The location of the ranch also represents the idea of isolation as the Spanish translation of the town’s name ‘Soledad’ means loneliness. By having no name, she seems to be even more friendless, and I think this is interesting because to get to know someone and try to make friends with them, a name is a good place to start. She regularly enters the bunkhouse, apparently looking for Curley, but as the novel progresses, we become aware that she is actually pretending to look for Curley just so she can talk to someone - “I get awful lonely,” conveys this realization. The men at the ranch become aware of her loneliness when she reveals to them that she is alone - “Think I don’t like to talk to someone ever’ once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?” Curley’s wife’s loneliness leads her to talk to Lennie and let him feel her hair. Unfortunately for both characters, Lennie does not realise his own strength and accidentally breaks her neck in anxiety and panic. In this case, I found the idea of loneliness interesting because it made me think about loneliness and how it can have a negative effect on people. Humans need friendship to stay connected and part of society and I found this interesting because I feel that I am surrounded by good spirited spirited people who do have friends and this really contrasts with the situations in the novel. The idea of loneliness and isolation is shown though the use of contrast - George and Lennie have a friendship which allows them to have support and “someone to talk to that gives a damn about us.” This
