Lowering The Voting Age In The United States

Should the voting age be lowered to 16 years old? There's some pretty good reasons to! Sixteen-year-olds should be allowed to vote because it is a better starting age for voting, and it will help to ease the problem of not enough people voting. Plus, they already have plenty of adult-like responsibilities. Why not voting?

If the government allowed sixteen-year-olds to vote, they would build in them the habit of going out in elections at a young age. Eventually, that will result in increasing the overall voter turnout as the population ages. Middle adolescents would go out and practise their right out of habit. Consequently, the country will be more democratic. Moreover, politicians will care more about middle adolescents knowing that their voices count. Therefore, better services and advanced programs as well as critical wise decisions will take place creating a better environment for them. Overall, getting sixteen-year-olds into the habit of voting will definitely turn the table.

I personally don't have much political experience because my parents don't vote. Therefore I don't really care much about voting. If kids aren't exposed to politics or informed on why they should vote then I don't believe decreasing the voting age will make much of a difference. If 18-year-olds do not have a high number of votes I don't see how kids younger than that would make a difference. I don't believe lowering the age is solution to increases voters. There are many concerns that might be brought upon if Congress chooses to lower the voting age in the U.S from 18 to 16. Many could assume that 16-year-olds are not competent enough to make mature and informed decisions. They could either choose to not vote or vote the way their parents tell them to vote. By lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 some people suggest improvement of voter turnout. On the other hand the problem is that by doing this there would be a decrease in the participation percentage. There have been many advantages and disadvantages to the change in the age requirement to vote. Currently the biggest disadvantage has been the voter participation percentage, followed by the demographic of the voters. With the age requirement being lowered to 16 the negatives may out weigh the postive.

By allowing 16 years old to vote, it could make them more interested in politics. Before voting, they will want to investigate about each party and the policies they have. Which in turn could will make them more interested in politics. I think that lowering the age to vote would have a bigger turnout then keeping it at 18. The only thing to disprove this argument is, ( younger voters show a lack of civic responsibility). In lowering the age of voting, I feel as if this would benefit America and the younger generation. It would help the percentage of participation from all age groups, in a positive way. Meaning parents can bring their children to vote alongside of them.

Statistics prove that young voters percential in voting turned out low. I believe the focus should be on maintaining and improving the convienience of voting for the high percetage of active voters. My opinion of lowering the voting age is, that they should leave it at 18, because if they lower the age to 16 many young people dont care about voting ,or they have no knowledge about who to vote for, they are just going to vote randomly, with out knowing who is the perfect candidate.
