Lysistrata amuses audiences through different comedic techniques to explore complex themes that Lysistrata puts forward. Many of these themes can be related within today’s society. The main themes that are presented within the play ‘Lysistrata’ are obedience, the woman are no longer prepared to obey the men and this gives up the typical stereotype of traditional house wife’s and mothers. Another theme is sex, the women use sex as a weapon to fight against the men to stop fighting in the war between Athenians and Spartans (look that up). The women of ‘Lysistrata’ rebel and go against their usual roles of women in the society and get together to end the war between the Spartans and the Greeks, to do this the women refuse any sexual activity with the men until the war has been stopped. The women on both sides of the war are coming together to fight against the men to end the war that they are fighting in. The theme of war within ‘Lysistrata’ is very amusing towards audiences and also very ironic that to end the war, the women are starting up their own war to stop the men from fighting in theirs, they fight fire with fire. “The hell with them. They can’t make threats or fires fierce enough. These doors stay shut. We only open them on those exact conditions we’ve set down.” (Page 17, line 248-251) This quote from ‘Lysistrata’ shows the comedic technique of double entendre to express the theme of war. The women will fight fire with fire against the men and the women will not stop the war of not having sex with their men until the men have stopped the war between the Spartans and the Athenians.
