MacBeth versions comparison essay
There are many differences between interpretations of William Shakespeare's MacBeth. This essay wall contrast Shakespeare's original version and a movie version by Roman Polanski produced in 1970. Three major differences will be discussed.
One difference between Shakespeare's and Polanski's version is the absence of the scene in England in Polanski's version. In the Original MacBeth, MacDuff goes to England to convince Malcolm to return and fight MacBeth. The scene of the longest of the play; it is very drawn out and lengthy. Polanski simply eliminates this scene and shows Malcolm back in Scotland. The reason I feel that Polanski did this is that the scene detracts from the continuity and action of

In the original, the letter was read by Lady MacBeth, and then not mentioned again. In Polanski's version, Lady MacBeth takes out the letter after everything with her and her husband's plan has gone wrong, reads it, and then kills herself. The reason that Polanski did this is that the letter is a useful device to cause Lady MacBeth to kill herself. She reads the letter, and it's all this happy news, but she and MacBeth are miserable, and all the good things in the letter have gone awry.
There are scenes also in Polanski's version which are not even included in the original. One of these such scenes would be the scene where the traitors from the war are being executed. They are brutally hung with cast iron brackets on their neck. This scene is very successful in showing the brutal treatment of traitors, the treatment that MacBeth would get if he was caught in his plan. The original did not do such a good job on this.
Another of these such scenes would be the dreams that MacBeth has about Fleance killing him and Banquo helping him. Due to the extreme lack of technology in Shakespeare's time, this was not possible. The dreams sequence serves to show how haunted MacBeth's dreams are, and how worried he is about losing the throne to Fleance because of the witches' predictions.
There are many differences between these two version of MacBeth, and each of them, I believe, serves it's own purpose to enhance and better the
The letter triggers the series of evil acts committed by the Macbeths, which starts with the killing of Duncan as a result of Lady Macbeth’s manipulative ambition. Lady Macbeth acts as a catalyst to make Macbeth’s transition happen faster because she starts to become manipulative as soon as she hears the witches’ prophecies: “All hail Macbeth that shalt be King hereafter.” The prophecy comes from the supernatural aspect of the play: the witches and Lady Macbeth is indirectly persuaded by the witches to manipulate Macbeth in this matter. The reason for her manipulating Macbeth is her own ambition to become queen, which in ways is stronger than Macbeth’s. This is actually shown by Macbeth in his speech in Act 1 Scene 7: “Nothing but males,” here Macbeth is stating that he knows how much time and effort Lady Macbeth has put into the planning of the regicide and he will go through with it. In my opinion the quote shows that Lady Macbeth has got more ambition than Macbeth because she is the one that has planned the entire plot and she is the one who keeps trying to manipulate Macbeth into killing Duncan. At this point in the play the Jacobean audience would have started having suspicions about Macbeth because of his dealings with the supernatural, which was considered evil and wrong;
In both plays, there was different methods to create drama. In both movies I watched, the drama was completely different. In Macbeth, one way that drama was created was when Macbeth stabbed another man in his sleep and some of the girls saw Macbeth killing King Duncan so that he could take the Scottish throne. Most people were not that happy with what Macbeth did because his actions were wrong and it created a bunch of drama with the people. Lady Macbeth started to feel the guilt of all the crime that her and her husband comminuted. Macbeth was stabbing King Duncan, Lady Macbeth had to take over Macbeth because Macbeth would not stop stabbing the King. There were rumors that Macbeth was going to have a couple people kill Banquo. So Banquo was trying to talk to Macbeth, but Macbeth had hired three men to kill Banquo so they did just that.
William Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Macbeth, is a tragedy brilliantly brought to the 21st Century by Rupert Goold. Although Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play set in 16th Century Scotland, Rupert Goold modernizes the play by changing the setting to a Soviet-styled country and implementing modern elements into the characters and theme. Although Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Rupert Goold’s film adaptation share many ideologies and a general storyline, a difference exists in the setting, the characters, and the overall ambience of the story.
After the death of Duncan Macbeth begins to work on his own without the help of his wife. He plans the murders of Banquo and the heir to the throne, Banquo’s son Fleance. Although it does not turn out as expected Macbeth remains calm until Banquo’s ghost appears. ‘... and keep the natural ruby of your cheeks, when mine is blanched with fear.’ This was the turning point in the whole story because until this point everything was going great for Macbeth, he had power, fame and fortune, all you could ever want;however, when this ghost appeared Macbeth went on a little insanity trip. He, also like his wife was engulfed with guilt and unable to function properly anymore. This led to another visit with the witches. Showing
”Macbeth retold” uses themes similar to the original play but uses a modified plot to appeal to the more modern audience. Retold utilises settings to create a controversial atmosphere. In contrast Shakespeare’s Macbeth uses an array of themes, a historical plot and language features that revolve around Elizabethan times. Even though the similarities are quite apparent, there are also some less obvious differences, the differences improve the sensitive response and the understanding that a modern audience may consume.
The original Macbeth is most notably a tragedy but also has comedic aspects to it as well. The film Macbeth really accentuated that tragedy aspect but eliminated all of the comedic relief from the original. Scotland,PA did the opposite and even though there were still factors of a tragedy they really used those scenes to make the fact that it was a black comedy abundantly clear. Even in the darkest and grimmest moments there was still an obvious sense of humour which really differed from the original play. Scotland, PA barely resembles its model Macbeth because it has been modernized and only contains a similar plot and similar character names. However, in contrast, the film Macbeth attempts to be faithful while intensifying the tragedy aspect of the play, adding their own interpretation, and adding details to places where the play itself was
Many people know about William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and know that it is a good play but not many people know that Shakespeare used Raphael Holinshed’s “Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland” as a source. In both stories there are many differences and similarities but the main one is the character Macbeth. Macbeth is a character in both stories but they both give him different and similar personalities, actions, and feelings.
Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth, is a play that transcends time due to its timeless and universal themes. The themes presented in this play are just as relevant to modern audiences as they would have been to contemporary Elizabethan audiences. The play has been able to maintain its textual integrity, withstanding the fact that it is now performed out of its original context to remain a successful play for modern audiences. The issues of heroism, abuse of power and the deceptiveness of appearances are all key within the play, conveyed through the use of dramatic and literary techniques, are issues which still resonate with contemporary audiences. Shakespeare has tested the parameters of the conventional tragedy that was extremely popular during his lifetime and in doing so has created text, which is still relevant today.
Macbeth, is a film that was made in 2015 and was directed by Justin Kurzel. The screenplay used for the movie was written by Todd Louiso, Jacob Koskoff, and Michael Lesslie. On the other hand, the screenplay was adapted by William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. William Shakespeare wrote this play back in 1606. The film and the play have some differences, some being small details that were just added by the writers of the screenplay. However, because this film is based on William Shakespeare’s play, there are also many similarities. A difference that stood out in the movie was the opening scene, where it shows a burial being held for what the audience can assume is Macbeth’s son. What I noticed throughout the film was that the storyline was based off of what was taking place in the movie (actions), rather than what
Prior to deciding whether or not conflict is central to the dramatic development of MACBETH, one must consider all the dramatic factors that contribute to the Shakespearean play. The gradual decline of the protagonist , the role portrayed by characters and the order in which the events occur, greatly influence the direction in which the development of the play takes place. After reading the text MACBETH, by Shakespeare and viewing the film version, directed by Roman Polanski, it is logical to see that ambition and the deceptive appearances of what really is, is central to the dramatic development of
Macbeth, like any play, is open to interpretation by the performers. Each separate performance is unique. The different stylistic choices made in performances of the play change the way that viewers see the characters and events. This means that while the events of the Goold and Polanski films are the same, they tell us slightly different stories. It is interesting to look at the two films in terms of their faithfulness to, and their divergences from the original text, and the effects that these choices have on their viewers.
Overall, though, this version of ‘Macbeth’ is definitely one to watch. The film is easy to follow and understand- making it perfect for both students and adults. Beautifully filmed and edited, this adaptation follows closely to the original whilst still adding its own twist- it’s Macbeth… but not as you know
In this story we see how Macbeth was a good example of trust with the witches to fulfill his desire of becoming a king as the witches had manifest to him. In the film we can see many things that were told in the story, also while watching the film of Macbeth I find out there was many parts of the film that was so different from the book. One of the main differences
When he hears the Doctor’s medical opinion of his wife, Macbeth sarcastically asks the doctor; “What purgative drug / Would scour these English hence? Hear'st thou of them?” (5, 3, 55-56). Also when he learns that his wife has committed suicide, he does not grief for Lady Macbeth because he is unable to express his feelings. Before she dies, she cries out; “Here's the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten / this little hand…” (5, 1, 48-49). His mind is engaged with the witches promise and therefore hopes that this will protect him.
Not only is Macbeth by far the shortest of William Shakespeare’s great tragedies, but it is also anomalous in some structural respects. Like Othello (1604) and only a very few other Shakespearean plays, Macbeth is without the complications of a subplot. (Bradley, 1905) Consequently, the action moves forward in a swift and inexorable rush. More significantly, the climax the murder of Duncan takes place very early in the play. As a result, attention is focused on the various consequences of the crime rather than on the ambiguities or moral dilemmas that had
