An influential English writer Mary Wollstonecraft once wrote, “No man chooses evil because it’s evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.” William Shakespeare's tragic play Macbeth draws one’s mind to an age-old question. Is a person evil, or made evil? Macbeth, at his core, was not evil; he started off with a moral compass. His tragic flaw of ambition, along with outside influence of the witches and his wife Lady Macbeth, placed him into a mental frame of mind to follow his ambition down this dark murderous path of no return. Although they were influences, Macbeth always had the ability to make the right decision. Macbeth is held in high regard as a sergeant in the king’s army. At the beginning of the play, he is currently in bloody battle defending King Duncan and his kingdom. In fact, King Duncan says, “Brave Macbeth, well he deserves that name” (1.2.16). Macbeth’s actions on the battlefield that are reported to Duncan are revered as heroic. Macbeth single-handedly beheads a traitor, which the battle. Macbeth’s bloody hands consume him. He believes he is no longer worthy of a blessing and will never sleep again. He overhears people praying, “ I had most need of blessing, and ‘Amen’/ Stuck in my throat” (2.2.39-40). Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s lack of sleeping is a big part of the play and the inner turmoil they suffer: “Me thought I heard a voice cry ‘Sleep no more! / Macbeth doth Murder sleep’ - the innocent sleep” (2.2.43-44). Macbeth quickly moves from remorse to being more concerned with whether or not justice will prevail and if he will be found out. He becomes insanely consumed with concealing his bloody secret at whatever the cost is to keep it. There are no more influences that aid in Macbeth’s murderous plots.
